Best Sources for World News?

pansophia
Recently I applied for a job that requires more than a passing knowledge of world affairs. While I have a strong background in History, recently I've only had time to scan headlines on the Internet.

Where is the first place people go to get a digest of world news? Also, I'd be grateful for a list of web sites that address specific issues that are especially relevant right now.

Fox is good, as they're the only conservative big network... so they aren't pumping out the crap that the liberal stations are, with their neverending anti-Bush campaign. It's brainwashing the people.

Go Fox!

I think it very much depends on what news you are interested in whether it be general local news or world financial. My internet service provider NTL has a really great news page which covers all aspects from music / entertainment news to world news. I have used this source for some of my posts on Frihost.

Here are some website you may like to take a look at:

www.ntlworld.com
www.reuters.com
www.news.yahoo.com
www.bloomberg.com

and of course the good old BBC.

www.news.bbc.co.uk

I use Reuters myself.

So you like them, because they're biased in the right way? Personally, I like my news sources to be without political bias one way or the other... I'd have a hard time trusting any news station with a political affiliation, particularly one as overt as Fox. No matter which way the bias leans, they still have an agenda, and report the news as they want it known rather than as it is. I'd prefer to have all the facts, and make up my own mind.

Reuters are good for that, as are the BBC. (Who attain political neutrality by attacking ALL parties. :p)

If you're in the UK, the Independant newspaper's a good one for neutrality, but it's good to occasionally pick up the Guardian or the Times for intelligent but biased perspectives.

You caught me before I could post. No, I don't like Fox because they are "biased" the "right" way. I like them because they present everything, the good and bad, whereas the liberal stations put only bad anti-Bush stuff out.

I try as hard as I can to get both sides of the story, and sometimes use multiple news stations to do so.

I'd say half of the anti-Bush campaign is from the liberal media not presenting the whole story. But that's only opinion.

In countless debates that I've read and countless threads I've moderated in the old Discuss World News forum, at a time when S3nd K3ys started a new thread every fourth day about the liberal bias in the mainstream media, I've leant one thing... Fox is as biased as CNN... but apart from a few Republicans, I've not come across many who'd agree to that.

But generally, we accepted BBC to be a neutral source of news in those discussions. CNN is far too left-biased, FOX is far too right-biased. BBC has some bias sometimes in some articles (though it's hard to say which side), but that's because it's a human being writing the articles, and every human supports one side or the other. But personally, in general, I've found BBC to be neutral enough.

There are countless news and newspaper sites out there, I have found. Staying current in world affairs these days takes more than just reading an americancentric article about another's cultural problems. Rather I find that going to that countries paper can sometimes be helpful, if they are not censored.
as for layout and quick and ease I personally have found and use:
http://www.marumushi.com/apps/newsmap/newsmap.cfm
I can quickly browse all the current headlines from around the world in one easy layout.
Great thread as I was curious myself Wink

The BBC, the CBC, Reuters are really good news agencies. Google News is good for finding and searching stories from various sites, plus you can set it so that it is in your language and specific to your region.

I have collected URLs from local newspapers from all over the world and tend to cruise them at random to get a different perspective from US sources. Another site I check and seems to be fairly unbiased is the Christian Science Monitor (http://www.christiansciencemonitor.com/).

And OMG, anyone who can stand to watch the propaganda on FOX ....I mean I try hard to vary the sources of my news for a sense of balance, but I just can't stand the sensationalism they throw on every freakin' story. It's not news, it just another 'reality' show. (please note the use of quotes around reality!)

i recommend yahoo and google (http://news.yahoo.com http://news.google.com )
they will lead you to many news agencies and also you can find specific news stories .
