best place for free images
I just went through this. Spent a couple of hours looking for background tiles for my template without finding exactly what I needed. When I When I fired up The GIMP to make some custom graphics I then found everything I needed.
THere are a lot of different image sites offering everything from stock photos, to art work and from background tiles to widgets. What exactly are you looking for? That might narrow things down a bit.

I see you left a little winky there next to your answer. The big problem with googling for images is that you will most likely be ganking someone copyrighted graphics. Since those folks can google for their meta data and find out who's stealing their graphics it don't matter if you even change the name. They can find you.

well at the moment I am looking for some high quality photographs for me to edit, I’m looking for images that represent links in some way this could be a chain link or a hand shake .etc but I always have the problem of finding free images I’m just looking for a good recourse really.
When I say free I mean that there should be no copy write restrictions and the website gives permission of you to use there images

another useful place if you don'y mind a bit or browsing is http://www.deviantart.com/. Lot's of stock photos, wallpapers, and even plug-ins and brushes for your fav graphics programs.

heheheI used to use those sites and they were good. Why don't you use Adobe Bridge? It has thousands of free images..

The "free images" you are mentioning are already on your computer. It's your computer that has the "thousands of free images." Adobe Bridge just gathers the image files found on your computer and shows a thumbnail of all of them so you can organise and sift through them easily. So if you go onto a computer with a fresh installation of any OS, and fire up Adobe Bridge, you're likely not to find thousands of useful images.
Edit: I use http://www.sxc.hu/ myself to find images for my site(s).
