Hey all,
I am considering creating an internet "start-up" although not as serious as the phrase implies. I have learned considerable amounts of HTML and Javascript, and have an idea for a site that I am happy with. I am willing to invest some into advertising and getting serviceable hosting, but I am concerned with how much I would need to invest in such an insecure idea to have a chance of it all paying off. I am asking those of you who have successfully created sites that create revenue, how much money and how long did it take until you began making a profit? Again, I am not looking for this to be a salary, I am just looking to make a little money on the side, but am willing to put time into the site.
Thanks in advance, Roughit

It all depends on you. Their is this anectdote I try telling all the time in my speeches that may help you understand:
"There was this story on the paper that was about this guy who became a multimillionaire in less than 8 years, What made the story odd is that the guy was a window washer and only 24, He started his own business at age 16 by buying off this contact list from a soon to close window washing company, With the help of a guy on welfare, He told him. You will work for me as a window washer, I will pay you as much as $1 Million Dollars if you desire, But I only ask of you, One simple thing. I want you to decide how much you want to earn? The guy on welfare said' "Well I want enough to retire as soon as I can". The window washer said, I'll grant you your retirement, But you must work for it. This company determines its success by how it's employee perform. The better the results, The better the pay. So eventually, His motivational speech would pay off and today he would run a company with hundreds of window washers earning the company a hefty profit."
The point of my story is, You decide how much you will earn. The more effort you put on the site (Content, Quality ect.) the more people will come, The more of a community you build within the site, The more these people will be supportive and earn you some profits.
Thanks for that. I'm not really looking to earn a profit, and I know that where I am right now, I'm not going to outperform my competitors substationally or even level with them. I'm sorry if my question was vague or open-ended, but what I'm asking is, how long did it take you all to break even on your sites?
And while I'm posting, I have a second question.
Does the benefit of a full domain (as opposed to a subdomain) outweigh the cost when dealing with a very small site?
I cant help you with the above question so much. But the key to making money from adsense (or other services) if bringing in REAL traffic. What I'm doing right now is trying to build a steady frlow of traffic. Getting regular to come to your site. Once you have a good traffic base, then put adsense (or other services that advertise) on your site. The reason for this is that generaly, the first 10 seconds that a visitors views your page, decideds if they come back. If your trying to get a steady traffic flow, you dont want to scare off your visitors with obnoxiouse advertisments.
Once you start making money from adsense (again, or other services), that i would suggest investing a portion of the profit in advertiseing on google and yahoo searchs. I wouldn't suggest investing any money into your site that has been made from your site..
Hope this helped.
It is really impossible to say... as you would need to know how many visitors you will expect to have then by estimating the click threw rate and the cost per click you could calculate it. for example:
CTR(click threw rate as %)
%
Total page impressions
*
adverage cost per click

I would say yes, especially with the minimal costs of owning a domain ($8 per year or so) and hosting a site (as little as $10 per month or less).
If you are putting in $130 a year, you should be able to recoup that (I would hope), and it is worth the level of professionalism that a TLD and hosting creates.
