Rather strange pagerank thing (not really a problem)

Well this is rather odd. I have 2 pages which are actually the exact same bar the page title yet one has a pagerank of 2 and the other 4. By the way they are the same page (not 2 seperate pages) just with different links

rather stange don't you think? Anyway my questions I put to you all ...

1) Any ideas why this is? All the difference is is the title of the addition of " :: main/welcome" Could this be worth pagerank 2?

2)If so would it be worth forwarding all the main page click to the main/welcome page to get the extra pagerank or not?

They have different page ranks because they are different URLs. Google sees each as a different page, and ranks each according to the number of links going to it and their relevance.

Having 2 pages that are fundamentally identical is not a good idea, Google will see the duplicate content and penalise the page rank because it will assume one is just a copy of the other and therefore less relevant. You should therefore use a 302 redirect on one of the pages to the other. This could increase your overall page rank, although you will not see it until the next page rank update.

Well their actually both the same page (index.php) just linked to differently, and the normal url (minus the main/welcome) has more link to it from other sites Confused

Yes. That was one of the flaws in google algorithm. But i had read somewhere about a month ago that in the new database update google will treat both the url's as same.

Mathiaus, google doesn't know that it's the same page and sees it as two different ones with the same content.

The best way would be to redirect one of them to the other, that should be a good solution in the long run.
