Why have I never remember my dreams?

Tvanag
When i sleep and wake up in the morning, i never ever remember my dreams unless somebody wakes me up.

Why this happens? Why other remember their dreams and me not?Is there any scientific explanations about this phenomenon?
Sebaci
I don't know. I have the same problem now.
selim06
i know something about dreaming but i don't know they can help you...
We can stay in dream only 12secs but we think we was in here lots of hours. And if we was anxcious we may forget our dreams because the mind refresh informations quickly so we may forget them...
Are you satisfied?

This isn't necessarily true. Scientists don't agree - some believe our sense of time is unchanged during dreaming, so if a dream "feels like" it lasts 5 minutes, it's because you'd been dreaming for five minutes.

As far as I recall, the biochemic explanation is that the flow of some chemicals in the brain (serotonin and something else I don't remember) is less than when awake, and these two chemicals play a large part in storing sensory data in memory (among other things - serotonin does so many things I wonder if anyone has made a list...).

Also remember an old theory that REM sleep is the "garbage collecting" state of the brain. If it is, encouraging people to remember their dreams (like Jungian/Freudian analysts sometimes do) is probably not really healthy Smile

Here's my theory on it... You go to sleep, your dreaming (constantly) then somehow you are disturbed and you wake up, for a few seconds that short term memory of the dream is still running even as your waking up, that's how you remember it so here's a ghetto ascii diagram...

Also, something odd happens to me, not sure about anyone else... But, during the day I'll be walking around and whatnot and I'll see something, for example a fire hydrant and I'll look at it and go "Hey, that was in my dream" but it wouldn't be from the same dream that I woke up remembering =/

One reason (in simplistic terms) could be a theory I heard mentioned once. That when you dream, there's really no recognisable imagery or "story" in your mind. That's created as the mind's interpretation the moment you wake up - or the moment you "remember" it - since our mind likes to make order, patterns, recognisable things out of chaos. Or in other words, the fire hydrant might not have been in your dream until the moment you saw it in real life.

Also goes to show how our mind has ways of messing with our sense of time (and this somewhat supports what selim06 said above) - the sense of time may be added when your mind interprets the dream's random activation of brain centers.

The strange mind-messing-with-time is also one possible reason for the feeling of deja vu - that it's really a recollection of sensory input a split second before it occurs, which the mind somehow gets mixed up to be a "long term memory" (other scientists believe that our mind is simply creating a false sense of recall - i.e., the mind gives us the feeling of remembering it from before, but there's actually no real memory of it).

Anyone who's (been so reckless with their sanity as to have) taken chances with psychedelic drugs will know first hand how easily these things occur - such as the experience of being in two very distinct places (inside in the kitchen and outside in the garden) at the exact same time - probably another shift in the perception of time. Sounds weird, feels totally natural at the time. Smile

I've often experienced somewhat the opposite to what you mention - that the few times I've remembered a dream, I'll be able to recognize a lot of unimportant things I passed by or thought of the day before. Sometimes I'll remember a thing from a dream, see it in real life, like at my workplace, then realize I've seen it hundreds of times before without ever actually noticing it.

Oh, and now I remember the other chemical that may induce the lessened capacity for memory and attention during sleep, along with serotonin - noradrenaline.

I was remember dreams which me dreams oneself, but not all!!!

I read it somewhere but i dont remember where?
It says when we wake up, our mind looks forward to future i.e the days works and so the dream which is in the short term memory is lost but when we have a shocking dream or if somebody wakes us from the dream we tend to think about the dream as soon as we wake up and so we remember the dream.

Also i heard we dream in black and white though i dont know how much it is true?

What happens is like you read before, that when someone wakes you up, your brain was in some relaxed state and was suddenly become in active state, when the brain become active, it doesn't know what happened just a few seconds ago so it must "complete" a history about the time it was out of activity so it recreates information based on the first thing sensed when you wake up. Example is that when you went to bed and it was warm but in the night the temperature went down and down, you wake up because of the cold temperature and you think you were dreaming walking in the north pole or something like that. It has happened to me a lot of times. Idea

I remember maybe 1 dream every 2 months IF I'M LUCKY. I've always been like that I hate it. I love remembering dreams they're so cool! When I remember one it makes my week Very Happy .

Crazy story though, after I tried LSD (acid) for the first time even though I didnt halucinate at all during the trip for the next week straight I had an awesome dream that I was able to remember every single night! Idunno why.

Hey all!
I've been reading all of the posts above because I really really think dreaming is a very interesting topic. But while reading through the posts, I wondered wheter the people that wrote the messaages are just some fools like me or even studying or working in this field. That would be great to know. To start with me, I am absolutely new to this. But I'm thinking about reading more, even serious scientific material on this topic.
But to explain what impresses me the most about dreaming is that I often had this dreams where you are in a comfortable situation, doing whatever and then it is like a huuge BAAAANNGGGG that almost lets your head explode and you are awake. I often had a very fast heartbeat after that, but I didn't know what went wrong in my dream, because I remember it was everything allright with the situation. Somebody experienced similar things?
Altough I kind of liked the posts of people that had experience with whatever kind of psychadelic drugs, and I'm absolutely interested in anything that they tell us about their experience I would NEVER taste things like that myself. As somebody said above.. I think it is just not made for us. It is bad for everybodys health.

One theory about dreams is that REM sleep, or dream sleep is the brain's way of "filing" all of your memories from the day, and deciding which ones should be put into long-term memory.

For example, if a memory from that very day of being at school is then filed in between a memory of a holiday to the beach and a memory of a particular family member, then you'll most likely have a dream about having classes on the beach with one of your family members.

Oh and if you really want to remember your dreams, a good technique that works well for me is to tell yourself a few times before going to bed "I'm going to remember my dreams". I'm not sure what the basis behind this is, but its worked for me in the past.

I have extremely vivid dreams, not every night, that are in full color.

We also have to keep in mind that there are literally thousands of theories still out on dreams. Just go through google for a couple hours with some different dream theory phrases.

I found the best way to remember dreams for me is to write them down IMMEDIATLEY. And then try once or twice during that same day to remember what happened in the day. I believe this will work for someone who doesn't even remember any of their dreams. But you do have to have them to remember them. I have noticed that if you don't try to remember them you also forget that you had them altogether let alone what happened during. You are the most likely to remember a dream directly after you wake up.

I've trained myself to remember lots of details in dreams. BTW i've also had dreams come true. I wouldn't have believed it myself and would have just put if off to some sort of deja-vu experience but I had recorded it on paper 4 months or so previous.

Hope those thoughts help on the matter.
Oh, and i'm still trying to find the link for it, they have identified one of the chemicals that starts your dreaming process and have engineered it. When people are given this synthetic version of the chemical they experience some weird dreams and barely remember them when they come out of it. This all sounds like LSD 2.0 to me but, it was interesting read. And, I don't, have not, nor will do psycatropic drugs, or any illegal drugs for that matter.

thanks for all posts i've learned new things and i changed my ideas...

I wonder why people tend to wake up from falling dreams. I remember once I managed to stay in dream mode after having hit the ground, the dream became very lucid and effed up. This was during a nap, and for two weeks I couldn't shake it from my thought and became very withdrawn.

I can remember pretty much I fell through the floor (the patch of ground I hit came with me) and it landed in some sub-terranian cavern that was filled with water. Also weird at this point was my dream went third-person (like I could see myself) I can't remember much following that, but I know I'm glad I don't.

(Sorry if this doesnt make sense to some... I just got home from work and am on a sugar crash)

I also quit remembering dreams for almost 2 years after that event. (only recently am I recalling them again.)

Why do you want to remember them? Generally you only remember dreams that are disturbing. People who have not suffered anything traumatic and not suffering from mental disorders do not remember dreams (unless as you mention they are awakened while having one).

This is not a problem!

There are plenty of reasons to remember dreams! One I think that we can learn a lot from dreams, and two it's fun to remember them!

I would also like to say that I believe it's not abnormal to remember dreams, WE NEED A POLL! hehe it'd be interesting to see how many people do remember their dreams.

Where do you get that from? I know plenty of people that remember their dreams. Not just when they are awakened and they havn't suffered traumatic events, nor do they have mental disorders. Now I know you stuck in the "Generally" clause so that you can say i'm just an exception, but I'd propose that it's at least 50% of people... then again thats why we need a poll! ;-)

I don't know how to remember them but I will give some other info that I believe..

It is believed that people with virtuous heart's dreams are more likely to become true. If you want to realize your dreams, you shouldn't lie ever:)

I try not to..

I agree that people need to be awakened during a dream state in order to remember their dreams. This is why it is less likely to remember them when you awaken naturally, as people do not awaken naturally during that sleep phase.

One way to help yourself remember your dreams is by keeping a dream journal. Keep a pen and notepad by your bed, and any time you wake up and remember anything, write it down. If you wanted to be hard-core, you'd set your alarm to wake you every time your sleep phases cycle. I can't remember how long the phases are. However, if you wake yourself during these times, you are more likely to remember. If you write down the pieces on your pad, that will help in the AM, as you will likely forget if you go back to sleep without recording your thoughts.

I have found that if I wake up and have a conversation just after remembering a piece of a dream, I forget it. Of course, that is not so if the conversation is about the dream

An interesting theory about dreams I have been told is that you are each character in your dream. Even if you dream of your significant other, it really represents a part of yourself that identifies with that person. It's really interesting to look at my dreams from that perspective!

for the past year and a half or so-i havn't remembered much dreams, maybe once a month i remember.(and it's only bits and pieces)

but from age 10~15orso, i ALWAYS remembered my dreams, and it was cool, because they weren't wierd dreams they were cool, and i was in control, it wasn't like a movie or something(like my friends say they have), i could do anything it was like a virtual reality video game!!
(if only i could remember it , i could make a RPG video game and sell it Laughing )

i long for the day when i can do that again, i can't remember what i did before i went to sleep, but i had a strategy that WORKED!!
might have something to do with i had way less stress then?
anyway that's my bit of info. Smile

Hello all I'm also in a situation where I cant remember my dreams and cant help feeling the frustration thinking this is also unhealthy. But I've had times where I've remembered dreams for hours and on 1 occasion have remembered a dream that went thru the whole night, well that what it seemed like at the time. These where the best nights of my life being able to dream the whole night thru and..... it was all about love and happiness and not one bad emotion entered in these nights. I'm still unable to recall most of the dreams, Still remembering all the feelings n emotions of those nights with the delightfull case like world of happiness with the whole universe so peaceful n accepting. This was soon gone when awoke but those amazing feelings lasted 2-3 days..., In this dream I was with somebody that really made me feel loved and vice versa. The future was so clear n colorful and it seemed like every atom or cell in the body was alive and not one dying organism, All worries of the world.. gone .. But now It seems like I can only remember a handful of dreams each year and my emotions seem to be so distant from the real me fading away and now I'm so yurning for my dreams to come back. Sometimes it leaves me feeling so empty n cold or maybe it's just a change or is something wrong, and myself has to learn to deal with what it is. Any who great story heh lol

But I have had at least 1 night remembering one dream that went thru the whole night and the experience was amazing!! Peace out all !!!!
