I just wonder what do you think is the greatest discovery or idea of history? The thing that has changed our lifes, opened our minds. I know it΄s difficult to choose, but try it. My choice is quantum mechanics.
The greatest ideas of history
my opinion is that the greatest discovery is the discovery of electricity.. look everywhere around us.. everything runs on electricity! it's everywhere, even the thing you are looking at right now runs on electricity..
I think the Thermos is the best discovery ever...It keeps hot things hot, and cold things cold...How do it know???
HA HA HA
Just a joke, if you have never heard that one.

I agree although I might add that electricity not only runs everything around us, it also helped to make it. Most of the machines used electricity. Some metals use electricity to make super strong alloys. Electricity even, before we even knew it, helps to run us. It causes are muscles to contract and is the messenger of the body.
I'd say electricity in a more recent purpose, but let's not forget that the wheel and fire where two major things in the evolution of our kind.

Exactly, without fire you couldnt very well make electricity
These discoveries were actually the starting point of the other inventions and discoveries
farming... were would we be if we where nomads we would have zero technology
how about the human thumb...not exactly an idea but it is none the less i believe the starting point of the great ideas to come.
you could say it was the idea of god, or DNA, or the whole mystical universe.
and let's not forget to pay our respects to the inquisitive and highly interesting human mind....
lol

Going way back, fire and the wheel are tremendously important, but the one idea/invention/creation that is the most important would have to be the printing press. To suddenly allow more people to read and become knowledgable was the greatest gift to human kind.
Every field has its own important discovery
So it cant be specific
but for every field one discovery would have changed the outlook of the field in this world

Communication.
If we couldn't talk to one another, we would be nowhere, and several species of animals would not be, as they are now, extinct.

I don't think anyone has hit it right on the nose, but ocalhoun is pretty close to my thought.
Writing
Without writing, we would be dependant upon spoken word to pass on accumulated knowledge. I don't think we would have made much progress in that fashion.
The printing press was a big boon, but it is just an extension of written language.
Of course, I suppose it could be argued that the written word is an extension of the spoken tongue, too.
The wheel is a good choice, also. But is fire an 'invention' or just a piece of the natural world we exploited...?

The Wheel
Farming
Writing
Where would we be with out them?

I think the greatest human idea/invention was the tool.
Without tools we would not have electricity, writing, the wheel and all the other things mentioned in this post. We all use things that where made with some or other tool. We fix things with some or other tool.
We have had to widen the use of the word "tool" to incorporate things we cannot physically touch, software is a tool, though we cannot touch it it is a tool, used to design other software, websites, games, even "physical" tools to make our things we use everyday.
that's my greatest idea/invention.

I think internet was another one of the greatest ideas in history.. I mean it's not like something essencial to our lives, beacause i think everyone can live without it easily, but it makes things like long distance comunications way easier and cheaper, it's a really interesting hobbie for everyone, and useful for companies to connect themselves world wide.. essencial for globalization..more reasons? where would be frihost without it? of course this wouldn't be possible without electricty, fire, "tools" and all the other great inventions already said by you all.. So I guess that makes all of them important in the same way.. Even knowing that technology can prejudice our survival.. never forget tht..
I would agree with HoboPelican about writing. Thanks to writing, we have been able to preserve history, ideas, and revolutionary discoveries. Without writing, we would not learn as easily, prevent advancement in technology and ideas, and not know our past.
The greatest invention that came from writing was the printing press and movable type. Since the majority of the world's population was of a lower class, books were expensive until mass produced. I thank the inventors of both the printing press and movable type

This forum would be really different without written language

I would probably go for the first tool ever made (prolly to crush someone's skull) or the wheel. Without either we wouldn't be here today
