Wierdest sports on earth (or off)

I have seen some pretty odd sports. Especialy ones for fund raisers. One of my favorite is Mijet tauses and Blindfolded Nuns riding on donkeys while playing backetball. Share your experieance or knowledge of odd sports here.

How about Curling? I know it's an Olympic sport, but, good lord, ice, stones and brooms? It's a blast to watch. Or the Biathalon. Skiing and rifles? I love it... I guess any sport is pretty dang silly when you start looking at it from out side it's cultural base.

Croquet.

Cheese rolling. I see it happen once a year and cant help but wonder how many people actually get injured chasing a wheel of cheese down a hill??
Michael Wilson
Kris,

Marc Ellis won the cheese rolling last year!

Not sure if it qualifies as a 'sport', but I imagine most of you have seen those wacky japanese riding huge logs down the side of a mountain! If not you need to see video. can't find a link to video, but this pic gives you an idea.

Makes Cheese-Rolling look positively mundane.

It may not be considered a sport, but the 'running with the bulls' is weird, stupid, and dangerous!!

Dang, I always wanted to do that. Of course, I wanted to be a rodeo clown, also....

Hmm, at least in running with the bulls, the bulls have a better chance than in a bull fighting rink. That alone elevates it in my mind.

Actually once you get to the end of the run you end up in the ring with the bulls.

Really? Didn't know that. What happens then? I can't imagine it ends in a bullfight immediately. Although 20 bulls in a ring with 20 matadors might be more fair than 1 bull, 1 matador and six "helpers'. As you can tell, I would be rooting for the bulls...

I actually think baseball is a pretty weird sport. There is a defined path that you have to run on. (the straight lines connecting base to base)

Theres also another reason that its weird. There is about 5-10 minutes total running in about a 3 hour game. Whats up with that??? Aren't you supposed to run while playing a sport?

Oh yeah. The baseball players are really not tough enough. Last year one baseball player missed a game because he sneezed before the game. Baseball shows no sign of being a sport.

Baseball is just to slow. There is a stop every few seconds. And also the length of the game varies too much. The game can last from 1 hour to 10 hours. I just can sit more than 5 minutes through a baseball game even if it is the last game of the playoffs.

mmmm. I tend to agree that baseball is a little odd, but I'm not sure how much running you think is needed to qualify as a sport. I tend to to think of a sport as a competitve physical activity. That would include darts, weight lifting, curling, cricket, even horseshoes. I never thought of running as being a criteria for being a sport. Heck, I wouldn't think of telling a boxer that what he is doing is not a sport....he might get mad and hurt me Smile

Now rugby, I'm sure that's a great sport but if you don't know the rules a scrum just looks like a bunch of guys getting a little too friendly! Wink

Some guy from croatian coast develop cocoball. This is something between basketball, amercan football and plays with ball looks like coconut. Players (1 girl and one guy) must score at coconut tree ring....

Baseball and Cricket are both evolution of rounders an early british game. Americans weighted their game in favour of the pitcher, British in favour of the batsman.

Shrove Tuesday ball game

Not far from where I live there is a sleepy village where once a year the play a game has continued for over a thousand years it is rumoured. It also just so happens that the British PM Mr. Blair calls it home.

read about the game and the village here. I missed this year's game but it is at the top of the list for next year.

Aw, come on, Blaster! Is it any stranger than golf Laughing It really si about the same thing. Although, Last year I was driving by a frisbee golf course in Phoenix and I swear to god, I saw a couple of guys pushing little carts with bags on them. I think they were frisbee golf bags.

I will now start laughing and appologize when a frisbee golfer takes offense! Laughing
Blaster
yea and they have different irons and stuff. It is kind of funny. I watched a show on it and the guy was acting like it was real golf. Laughing
kany
Well what about ****** Roach race. that was some fun though .

I think the Japanese take the cake for silly sports. If you live in the US or are good at finding obscure videos on the internet look for "Sushi TV". A lot of their clips come from a show called "Superhuman Colloseum". But there are probably many other silly shows they take clips from.

I don't know if this really constitutes 'sport' as such, but it's all about competition and it's funny as hell to watch Very Happy

What about ultimate frisbee? These guys seem to have taken Frisbee a little too far. http://www3.upa.org/index.php

curling is very interesting sport lol. My friend did a report in school a while back and it was cool to learn and understand the game. It seems pretty fun

Yeah, but does it seem like fun to play or watch on TV? Laughing

How can curling qualify as a sport? You don't even have to be a little bit fit to play it. And what's up with the brooms Very Happy I think its just an activity or simply a game, like poker is a game, but sport?? come on... Guys with brooms are even more active than those who throw the stones.

I'm assuming your tongue was firmly stuck in your cheek during that post Laughing
When I think of the pot bellies I've seen on baseball players, I don't really think of fitness Smile Or a center on a pro football team! I think "sport" seems to be more about competition than fitness. And just curious, how "fit" does a bobsleder have to be? Not casting slurs, I just dont know much about it.

Polo.

HOW THE ****** DID SOMEONE COME UP WITH THAT!?

What, they just happened to be riding around with a large stick and when they saw a ball they say "Why, look Chaps! A ball! Let me hit it with my stick while galloping my horse as fast as I can get it to go!"

I have been riding horses for 12 years and polo is HARD. Polo has resulted in mannnny trips to the E.R and a new appriciation for shin guards.

My pinch of salt to the discussion..

Biathlon is not only a sport, but a very demanding one. They do use guns, but let's not count the number of olympic modalities which also do. Then, that's cross-country skiing what they're doing - not just sliding down a slope. The combination of having to ski fast, then concentrate on aiming, and taking little time for that - I do think it is worthy of being called a sport.

Curling indeed appears to lack this physical component, but so all other precision sports: golf, marksmanship, bowling... well, they require good health and a lot of technique - in contrast to chess, where your mind, not your hands, make the action. The brooms are there for a reason, and make curling a team sport - sweeping melts the ice, and the more you melt the farther the stone goes.

Bullfighting, either in the arena or street variants, are NOT sports, at least in Portugal. Polo, for example, appears to have evolved from a popular game, just like footbal. Bullfighting is a show - without going into animal rights issues, the object is to show your prowess and courage, while abiding to certain rules. My argument is to look at ancient Olympic games - teasing animals was not in the menu, the idea was rather to pit oneself against other competitors. Indeed, I put bull, dog or ****** fighting under 'diversions' - which I don't condone. On the other hand, if you check Wikipedia out, all of these, along with fishing and hunting are called 'bloosports'.

A very peculiar sport is Pilota, found in some regions of Spain. More peculiar still is the Basque tradition of lifting stones - they maintain that you need your head as much as your muscles!!
