Britain's most powerful super computer has received a £52m boost from the government.
When it is built in 2007, the high spec number cruncher will be faster than any in Europe.
The High-End Computing Terascale Resource, or Hector as it is known, will be owned by the Research Councils of the UK.
It will be used by scientists to simulate everything from climate change to atomic structures.
The new supercomputer could run at speeds of up to 100 teraflops and will be able to carry out up to 100 trillion calculations every second, 100,000 times faster than an ordinary computer.
However, it is unlikely to ever be pushed to its limits, achievable only for short bursts of time that are too small for scientists to run their programs properly. |

And one day, they will connect all the computer in the galaxy.
And then they will ask the final question: "Does God exist?"
After some buzzing, the machine will answer, slowly:
"Yes, NOW there is a God".... and a lightning bolt will strike on the start button blocking the machine forever ON....
Haha Hector.....
anyone else read Douglas Adams?
"Hector, desgin for me the ultimate weapon."
For some reason, I expected more power than that. I really believe that our super computers today are weak, this one is powerful, but I think it should have even more power. (I suppose money is the main problem when it comes to building super computers.)
That's good. I personally think supercomputer's days are numbered, and eventually we will use distributed computing over the net to do all large calculations, just like the SETI screensaver, or the BBC climate change model.

Doesn't the PS3 push 3 Tflops? I could get more power by linking up wal-mart if that's the case.

Hell no...The PS3 processor is clocked at 4.6ghz.

Lol...Ever read Asimov? One of his short stories is about that.
