Hello All,
I'm new to BBS and am lookin' for a good Free BBS
that's updated somewhat regularly, and doesn't have
swiss cheese like holes all over the script..

I agree, PHPbb is a great board, fully customisable and updated regularly to help prevent hacking and to fill any holes that can occur in any board.
This forum is an example of a large phpbb forum.
You could also try simple machines forum (smf) , not sure of the web link try a google search if intrested.
Yes, try http://www.phpbb.com , very nice bulletin boards http://www.simplemachines.org/ is nice too.... like the admin panel.

I think that e107 is pretty good. I haven't had a whole lot of experience with it on my own site, I tried it for awhile, but I've seen it on other sites and it seems to work very well. It has forum capabilities, but it is also a complete website system. I'd say definatly worth a look if you're making a new site.
I do also agree with the others that PHPbb is very good. It is the forum system I have on my site.

I'm currently running MercuryBoard. I like it. It's relatively custimizable and has decent help support on their website http://www.mercuryboard.com You can also use MyBulletin just a free script it works like vBulletin but freee...But if you have a beginner level of webmaster service you should use SMF i think because mods and other things can install easily...

Try ANYTHING but PhpBB. PhpBB is insecure, updating to a newer version sucks, and administration stinks. I'm not sure if you know fbtk, but they have an entire website that is PhpBB based. It is hacked all the time because of all the security flaws. PhpBB is the Windows of the BB world.
SMF(Simple Machines Forum) is a great BB and is much more secure than PhpBB.
YaBB is a great free BB too. You can auto block proxies and bad referrers with a single check box.
QuickSilver, the successor to MercuryBoard is also good. It is faster than PhpBB and twice as secure. I haven't used quicksilver because I don't like the mercuryboard layout, but I bet it twice as good as its predecessor.

phpBB is easy to use and fast , has lots of mods and skins.
SMF is quite nice too. more secure and more and more prosper.
Punbb is simple and fast.
I back PhpBB all the way...
It is running great, even after 6 re installs Yeah, phpbb is easier to customize and install mods but I'm using invision power board (it used to be free). Just search google and you can find downloads for some of the free versions for IPB.
