Music? Or Money?

I totaly agree with Mike Portnoy(Dream Theater's drummer):

"I got into making music to make and share music....I didn't start a band to become a millionaire...
I became a musician to have an artistic outlet that I wanted to share with as many people that would possibly listen"
(taken from his forum board: http://www.mikeportnoy.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=58)

I also think that an artist should make music for the music, for the fans, and just for fun.

What's your opinion(s)?

I think most artists did it for fun and for their fans, and even for the message they want to give to their listeners in the early beginning of their career. Why do I think this? You really need a lot of motivation to keep going, you aren't good in a few months. I know someone who started a rockgroup about a year ago, and he's doing well, but without motivation he never would have reached the level he now has.
