(And you don't have to learn all these languages at the same time. It goes step by step, taking years. Else you would be sitting and watching like
Can anyone tell me a little bit about chinese? I don't speak anything in that language. How does it work?
Greetings,

Wow, Kitty, you know languages I never even heard about! That's great! I like languages because if you can read them (even when I need a lot of time while reading, because I'm not so good in all of the languages I mentioned before) you learn about strange cultures and strange people from their inside.
Kitty, could you tell me where they speak Ilocano? And Tagalog?

Nope, Frisian in my opinion is quite hard to write, it's so different then Dutch. And frankly, we haven't had much lessons in writing frisian on primary school >_<, which I think sucks. Reading is also pretty damn hard XD, I can read english 10 times better then Frisian.

Well, I was born in Romania and so I grew up with romanian language, the hungarian one and german. But after moving to Germany, after all this years, I forgot the most words from Romanian and Hungarian language. But I learned English - and still I do - and German became my favourite language.
The Need of an universal language to be teached in every country
Abdu´l-Bahá said, when He was in London and spoke to the interested people there:
| Quote: | The differences in language cause disunion between nations. There must be one universal language. The diversity in Faiths is also a cause of separation. The true foundation of all faiths must be established, the outer differences abolished. There must be a Oneness of Faith. To end all these differences is a very hard task. The whole world is sick, and needs the power of the Great Healer.
These meetings teach us that Unity is good, and that suppression (slavery under the yoke of tradition and prejudice) is the cause of disunion. To know this is not enough. All knowledge is good, but it can bear no fruit except by action. It is well to know that riches are good, but that knowledge will not make a man rich; he must work, he must put his knowledge into practice. We hope the people realize and know that unity is good, and we also hope that they will not be content to stand still in that knowledge. Do not only say that Unity, Love and Brotherhood are good; you must work for their realization. |
And the prophet of our era, Bahá'u'lláh said:
| Quote: | The day is approaching when all the peoples of the world will have adopted one universal language and one common script. When this is achieved, to whatsoever city a man may journey, it shall be as if he were entering his own home. These things are obligatory and absolutely essential. It is incumbent upon every man of insight and understanding to strive to translate that which hath been written into reality and action.... That one indeed is a man who, today, dedicateth himself to the service of the entire human race. The Great Being saith: Blessed and happy is he that ariseth to promote the best interests of the peoples and kindreds of the earth. In another passage He hath proclaimed: It is not for him to pride himself who loveth his own country, but rather for him who loveth the whole world. The earth is but one country, and mankind its citizens.

It is my opinion too, that we don´t have to loose time to learn some languages. We have to grow in spiritual meaning, to help all people come to the belief in just ONE God. All religions are good, we have to look to their roots, to the prophets themselves, and follow their example in serving the will of God. He treats me better, than I do myself. His mercy is greater than His justice, He is my knight in shining armour.
Peace

North America
English
Thai
Laotian
Khmer
Mandarin (ma ma hu hu)
I can speak English, French, and a bit of Spanish. I can write English, French, and a bit of Spanish. Why learning so much languages... it is of no use anyway

If it doesn't matter how much I speak, list is much bigger, but maybe just one phrase isn't enough...
I can speak more than one phrase:
Finnish (mother tongue)
English
Swedish (not much)
German (little)
French (very little)
I can speak
English
Chinese(Mandarin)
Sign language
I am learning
I can speak a little
I also speak (un-official languages):
(p.s I'm not deaf, I can see, hear, and talk perfectly well.)
English, and I'm currently studying Latin. I suppose I can speak it; however, no one (with the exception of one tribe somewhere in the remote mountains) does anymore, so I doubt it counts.
Hmm...language-wise, I can speak a little Chinese (Mandarin). I used to be fluent, but English has since taken over the role as my primary language. I can also speak a little Spanish; I had to take a few years' worth of it between my junior high and high school years. Other than that, I've been doing a combination of teaching myself Japanese and learning it from school.
As for computer languages (as someone had mentioned in this thread), I can just "speak" HTML. I'm trying to learn PHP, but it's not going very well. xD

Polish as a native, English (some people say that like a native ), some Spanish, the basics of French and German. And the Russian alphabet, so I can communicate with Russians (our languages are quite similar, so I don't need to know Russian to understand it )
I am from India.
I can speak, write and read
1. Tamil - native tongue
2. English - Duh..
3. Hindi - National Language
4. French
5.Little Spanish
6. Some Japanese
I speak English, but I have learned Japanese (and am now rusty), German (which I have almost completely forgotten), Ibibio, Efik, and a bit of Ibo and Yoruba. I can scarcely remember any of those languages, except for greetings and a few random words. Oh, and I learned some French at school, but have never in my life had a conversation in French.
Mainly English and Spanish, but also know a little German, some Japanese, and when I worked in a restaurant in Orlando, FL, I learned to say "Thank you" in a number of languages in order to provide a pleasant experience for the many international visitors we would get.
Now I am a missionary in Honduras, and am learning Japanese from a Red-Cross nurse who works here, and am teaching her English - all through our common, second language of Spanish. LOL!
On that note: With Google, one may find all kinds of sites for learning or practicing Japanese, but what sites have you (i.e. anyone who is learning/has learned Japanese) found to be the most helpful, and why?
Well.I was born in Turkey and my parents only speak Turkish so I know Turkish fluently.
I grew up in New York in America so I speak English fluently.
I learned Spanish for about 4 years in school.I got almost all A's but I can't speak anywhere near fluently.
In school I also learned javascript and now I am learning Java in class if that counts
So I know Turkish, English, and some Spanish (if you don't count Html, Java, and Javascript)

Hi Traveller, on the subject of communicating via a second language, that's happening to me right now. I have a friend from Eastern Europe who speaks German fluently as a second language, but virtually no English, so she speaks to me in German, and I reply (usually) in English.
On the matter of websites to learn Japanese, I'm actually planning to put up a site in my frihost space in the next few days, which is for learning to read Japanese by building up kanji recognition. I'll post a link as soon as I do.

Interesting. Of course, English came from German, so the two are much more easily reconciled than English with Japanese.

Chinese (Mandarin)
English
I could handle both of the two languages fluently, in writing, reading, communicating. Both of these languages will be my working languages very shortly.
Now I am keen to know how many of you could speak Chinese, of course, i mean Chinese is not your mother language. Are you interested in learning Chinese as your second or third language? Do you feel it is useless or hard to learn Chinese?
I think it is hard. Writing at lest. There are too many symbols.
Chinese would be interesting to learn. I know because it is a tonal language, native English speakers often find it difficult, but I have learnt a tonal language before, so I know I could cope.
Meanwhile, for Traveller and anyone else interested, I have put up this page here:
http://www.bruceattah.frih.net/jp/browse-example-sentences.php
which is for helping people learning to read Japanese.
You have to log in as "guest" with the password "beta".
It is only part of the Japanese-learning stuff that I want to put online.
It is also very ropey at the moment, and I need to fix a lot of things, but your feedback is welcome.

English (mother tongue) --> read, write, think, speak, dream
Chinese - cantonese (mother tongue) --> speak, read+write most, dream
Chinese - mandarin (learning) --> read+write, speak with bad accent, think
Chinese - taiwanese (learning w/mando) --> read+write, speak with better accent
French (have been learning for 4 years) --> read+write, speak, think, dream
Japanese -->(lessons for 2 years) --> read
Korean (learning at home) --> read, write, speak some
oh yeah. almost forgot:
Chinglish (mastered)
Chatspeak
Css+Java
NEWFOUNDLANDIAN!!! x3 this counts as a language on its own. =/ weird accents, eh? most canadians can't understand them. xD
English
Korean (Fluent)
Japanese (Understand about 80%)
I need to improve my Japanese. My mom always talks to me in Korean so I got that language down. My dad only speaks Japanese if he is talking to his parents or other family member. If he would speak it more I probably could learn more. I'm happy enough that I know English which seems to be the most important language.
i can´t speak, i am a deaf person and dumb.
;/
German - Deutsch
Well, I was born in Germany and spoke it for my whole life. Nothing more to say I think...
English - English
By far my favourite language. So easy to learn, speak and write and it's probably the most useful language.
Latin - lingua latina
I can't speak it - I just can translate Latin texts. This language is simply too hard! I wish I would have chosen French instead...
I can speak:
English
Chinese
Cantonese
Malay
A little Japanese
Just these..
I can speak
-English
-Spanish
-Html
and i want to learn french
I can speak English fluently, have you noticed?
However, I also know a bit of French (I studied it for 3 years) and quite a bit more German than French, I'm not too bad at that now - but I'm going to keep improving.
I know a few words of Swedish, from listening to (and trying to learn the words to) some Swedish songs. I went to Switzerland on Holiday not too long ago and although I went to the area where German is most predominantly spoken I picked up on some more local words, but what language is that? Localised German or something? I know one (maybe a few more if my memory was jogged, but none off the top of my head) Chinese word too.
I think that's everything. I must say that I'm really impressed with the sheer quantity of languages that some people can speak; it really is truly amazing - I find learning language the hardest thing to learn (apart from programming languages, but that's another topic altogether).
I speak:
French ( MASTERED )
English ( ALMOST MASTERED )
Spanish ( Not mastered at all, only a little base )
But I think that nowadays, one MUST speak English to be OK in life.
i.e.: If China and Honduras (really hypotetical theory) want to speak between themselves, they will speak English, as well as France and Spain, let's say ...
Mm I can speak
English
Urdu
Arabic (a bit)
Pashto
Punjabi (a bit)
Hindko (which is similar to Punjabi)
Norweagian, a good enough English, and a few words on Thai.
Hmm, I can speak:
- Dutch (mother tongue)
- English
- German
- French
- Italian
- Spanish
- Portuguese
The last 3 I can speak a little bit..
I can speak:
-Romanian (I'm romanian)
-English (allmost perfect)
-German (good)
-Freanch (not so good)
Short list...
You think you have a short list, check out mine;
English (I would assume mastered, as I can point out some mistakes in people who have a seperate main language (this thread included))
German (a little)
I had a one-year course of German back in highschool. I would not mind if someone wanted to talk to me (via pm) just so I can regain a footholding in it.
Swedish
English
Spanish
some norwegian but it's almost like swedish so you can talk swedish and they will understand.
I was just about to comment on how so many of you seem to list English as amongst the languages you speak and how this backs-up the old English idiom that we English do not need to learn any other languages because everyone in the wrold speaks English.
It was then I realised that this is indeed posted in English speaking forum which would have a huge bearing on my findings.
I am so pleased this dawned on me before I made the comment and made a complete arse of myself in front of a larger than usual international audience.

I'm trying to teach myself spanish, currently I speak only English. I've only been doing this by listening to tapes in the car on my way to and from work in the evenings. I've noticed that since I started this endeavor, I'll wake up sometimes in the morning with the idea in my head that I was trying to speak Spanish in my dreams, not always very successfully. Not to say that i"ve been dreaming I speak Spanish, but more like I'll be going through the tapes in my head, struggling to construct sentences I know I'm only learning. My French teacher in high school told me that once you start dreaming in another language, you know you're fluent--I don't think that this could possibly be true, since I'm already dreaming a little bit about Spanish and I'm about as far from fluent as you could get.

My grandmother used to speak about 10 different languages, that was pretty much impressive
Just like everything I guess, time and regular practice should do the job
I can speak English very well, but am terrible at spanish. Nobody knows why. But it was my terribleness at spanish that allowed me to be able to learn Japanese with ease! Hahaha Backwards sentences ftw. I do wish I could learn Cantonese though.. it makes me sad that I fail miserably at it. I always enjoyed watching kung-fu movies in Cantonese. It's such a nice language. Too bad its'a damn hard
I can
English: speak/read/write
French: speak[hardly -- 0.5/5] / read [hardly -- 0.5/5]
Urdu: speak/read/write
Hindi: speak
Punjabi: speak/read
By the way, in which language/languages you write from bottom to top.
I know in Arabic/Persian/Urdu writing is from right to left (opposite to English).
