I just got a job programming PHP and SQL in a city that's that's too far away from home for me to use my parent's car to get there. I'm going to have to buy a new car, and the 2 main factors for buying are PRICE and RELIABILITY, since I have almost $0 in the bank and I intend on keeping this car for 5 - 10 years.

I've narrowed it down to two cars, these are the prices in the trims I want/need (which is 5-speed manual, power windows and locks, cd player, and A/C)...

1.) 2006 Kia Rio 5 - $15, 500
-> All new for 2006, great MPG, Kia is getting really good now, great reliability, best bang for buck.

2.) 2007 Honda Fit (Comes out April 3rd) - $17, 100
-> Good MPG, honda name and reliability, interior and exterior is much nicer then Rio, more fun to drive. In general I'd be much more proud to drive this car.

Please let me know what you guys think about these two, and if you think there are other cars I should consider. Does anyone own a 2006 Rio or Rio5, or is ordering a Fit, who can give me their input?

I think Honda Fit (Jazz here in Europe...) is best, but I'm kind of suspicious as I'm an Honda fan... Very Happy

Honda Rulez!

Go for the car you would be proud of mate!!! Ifyou're in a Honda it also looks better when youturn up for work!!! did ya fink of that??

Rule # 1: NEVER buy a new car. Get an off-lease or a very slightly used one. That way you'll save thousands. Also, if your'e concerned about reliability, you should buy a truck, not a car.

Buying a new car never hurt anyone. You know it will be in working condition and you have all the waranty. This man doesn't want a truck but a more practical car. Most trucks aren't that much more reliable than cars anyway. You are just in love with trucks.
I would go with the Honda. Japanese engineering, very reliable, handles good. I find that it feels just a little more refined and sturdy than a Kia. The difference only is $1600 which is not an extreme amount of money when you are talking these prices. I'd say test-drive both and make your choice. In the end you are the one who is going drive them
ocalhoun
Bah, I bought my truck for half as much as the prices mentioned above, but it'll still be running when those cars are in the junkyard.
The downside: 14.5 Mpg city 18 higway.

Go with what you like. I, personally, would go with the Honda Fit. Kia is not exactly the best car out there. Honda is very reliable, and has a good amount of features. Now, the Honda is slightly more than the Kia. If that is a problem, take the Kia. Oh, and if you worry about price, get a used car. This may be hard to believe but, you can get an old maybe 2000 Mercedes or BMW around the price of these two. Well, anyway, I'd say the Honda Fit. But, you should go with whatever you like.

Thanks for all your help guys. I am test driving both the Fit and the Rio 5 this week, and I'll tell you which one I am getting, but I think I've alraedy decided that I'll I'll either buy the Fit, or just go ahead and look for a good used car for a bit cheaper.

Between those two, I say the Honda. But as has already been said, get a slightly used car, save thousands. Cars drop in value the most in the first couple years. as for me, the newest car I've driven has always been at least 9 years old, and so far I've sold every car I've owned for profit after driving it for a few years. But then, I'm a grease monkey Very Happy Still, used is the way to go. When it comes down to it, though, it's only a good deal if you like the car, so even if you get a used one make sure it's something you'll be happy with.

The Honda Fit/Jazz is a class act. Very good car. It was just over budget for me when I got my car. Would have loved one. Get it.

Buy BMW best car from the Germans.

Honda is better than Kia. Because they have longer history and better reputation. By no means this statement is forever, maybe Kia will improve in the future.

Thanks for the replies guys. I also agree that I should get the Honda.

At the time that I made the poll, I was working two jobs, 7 days a week, and needed to buy a car to get to the farthest job, which was a 40 minute drive on the highway. Since then I am back to one job, and it's the one in my city so I won't have to buy a car anymore. (Not to mention I can't afford it anymore, since I now make 50% less then I did before)

Thanks for the replies though!!

He say's he's looking for a car to do mileage with !!! Not burn gas !!!!

Have you looked at the VW Polo and Toyota ??

Toyota gives you 5 years warranty (at least in Europe) which means no auto shop bills for a certain time (you still have to pay some stuff though)

Aww. Too bad. Honda is really good car though. Its one of the hottest selling brand of cars in Asia! However, I would prefer Jaguar. But it is really expensive!! Burns your pocket man!! My advise is, don't get a car til your financially ready!!!!!
OutlawSpirit
get a honda... really reliable Cool

word of advice... dont buy brand new... i never will do due to previous experiences and from what i have heard... brand new cars, u have all the starting problems of a new car... older cars, or cars of a few years of age seem to have less problems u have to worry about
CreepingD
I'm not really fund of those kia's Embarassed
bluefossil
In your Money Situation I would go with the Kia. DOn't they have the 100,000 mile warranty?

but. if you can afford the Fit and you really do like it better, I have to say go for the honda. If you are gonna have to make long commutes you have to get a car you like driving in.

Ocalhoun is spot-on about buying used versus new. In fact, the general rule to get the best value for the used car in best condition is to get one that is TWO years old. It's not new enough to have new-car problems and not old enough to have old-car problems. In addition, that's about the best balance of depreciation savings versus repairs and maintenance.

Consumer advocate, Clark Howard has this to say:
Quote:
Oct 26, 2005 -- Used cars hold value longer than new
Why does Clark prefer that you buy used cars instead of new? Well, according to Kelly Blue Book, the value of a new car drops like a rock as soon as you leave the lot. Let’s say you buy a new American car and trade it in five years from now. How much of the original purchase price is it worth? Between 22 and 25 percent. In five years, it loses between 75 and 80 percent of its value. What about Japanese cars? Two vehicles that hold their vehicle better than any other car are the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. They hold about 60 percent. So, there is a benefit to buying a new Japanese car versus a new American car in terms of resale value. But there is still a large drop. If you buy a used car that is a few years old and have it checked out, the car will keep its value much longer. There may also be some of the warranty left on the car, which is great. Even better news is that car prices are no going down and car companies are adopting a “no-haggle” buying procedure. So, the process is easier and cheaper. GM is one of the companies that tried the no haggle deal, and it did not work so well for them. So the company is implementing special incentives on top of the deals. It’s basically a great time to buy a used car. Just remember to always have your used car inspected by a certified mechanic and research the title history on carfax.com. That goes for “manufacturer certified” cars as well.

He also recommends the following things to keep in mind when buying a used car:
Quote:
• Arrange your financing first
• Check Consumer Reports' listings of car models that have performed well. Don't buy any car on the magazine's list of used cars to avoid
• Find out what you should pay by checking prices at edmunds.com or kbb.com, or ask a friend to look for you.
• Have a used car inspected by a diagnostic mechanic, to see if it's been wrecked or has any major defects.
• Pay for a report on the car at carfax.com. It's worth it.
• Don't buy from an old-style used-cars-only lot.
(Source: http://clarkhoward.com/shownotes/category/5/124/180/)

Clark's advice is very good, and I could add to that (but will spare you the details) the stories of the people whom I helped when I was a credit counselor. Suffice it to say, it's best just to let somebody else pay the full price and take the depreciation hit while you enjoy (if you do your homework properly) a tested, already broken-in car. I've only bought one new car in my life and, even though it happened to last me 13 years, I realized, over time, just how much money I had lost by having bought it new.

I think just as same as ocalhoun does. But, that is only for cars that are not German. Try and buy a year old audi, bmw or mercedes. Oh boy, it's going to cost you! I'd go for a japanese car that was used a year or two. Just in case it breaks, have your cell with you to call the towing Rolling Eyes
You never know with the cars!

Hm! Question: trucks are more reliable than cars? Why do you say that?

Pablo,

One more thing for you to consider is that ppl are saying very bad things about cars like kia and hyundai. I don't think you have researched enough!?

Good luck,

Go with the Honda.

I don't like Kias too much, besides, it's only a couple grand difference.

Funny: Honda have never made a Corolla in their life!
They leave that up to the competition, Toyota.
But indeed, the Corolla seems to have the reputation of being the world's most reliable car.

Honda Fit! i love Honda's car
