Google Whacking

Scorpio
I am not sure if any of you know about this. But there is this game called google whacking.

Objective: To enter a search term in google which provides exactly one result and one result only.
Not less not more.

Has anyone tried this. Why dont you guys give it a shot?

And tell me if you can get it? Gives one a chance to think Very Happy

Don't do it too much, it gets very addictive... My friend was doing this for the whole of two classes last year Razz
Jack_Hammer
I believe it has to be of two words, and each word has to be a word which is in the dictionairy (When you type in google it has to be found on dictionairy.com) and the result found cannot be a list of words, or another search engine.
Kaneda
I'd think most people would find it too frustrating, since in 99% of cases where you manage to find two words that combine to one search result on Google, the search result IS one of those hundreds of useless search engines. And hence, doesn't qualify. Like:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=floorboard+arachnophobics&btnG=Search

Razz
Nyizsa
Here is one:
http://www.google.com.tr/search?hl=en&q=Nyizsa+vegetarianism&btnG=Search
I am not sure if it counts since it has my name in it... But it produced 1 result!
Blaster
I will take it you can do only one word.

Nope, it must be two words that are in the dictionary (ie. the words next to the 'Results 1 - 1 of 1 for ....' are clickable.

phone banklett produced one result. FIRST TRY! lol

Any other fun Google games?

I found these: http://blog.outer-court.com/quiz/ and http://www.googlefight.com/

Thanks for providing me the link to Googlewhack.com, it's been added to my huge bookmarks list (several thousand pages in it). Just one more for it.

What I find amusing is how you go onto googlewhack listings sites and see all these Googlewhacks, and then when you search them they're not googlewhacks anymore because the listings site show up in google Very Happy Anyway, the closest I got to a googlewhack was two results, and that was with dictionary words. I think the rules of the game are that your googlewhack cannot come up with a 'did you mean' phrase for a spelling mistake.

this is addictive!
romaop
It's very unlikely to get this. But I know one solution. First:
1- Get a 2 word combination with 0 results.
2- Make a site that indexes these 2 words.
3- Wait till Google finds it.

But 4 might happen

4- Google now shows more than 1 result: other sites are now founded.

Try these words:
vegeteranism (this is a good one: few results)
shade

It produced one result!!!
Scorpio
You got the spelling for Vegetarianism wrong. It should be a word from the dictionary.
The right spelling got me around 5,280,000 results and that certainly is not small.

Done.

Scorpio
No you are not allowed to use quote marks.

I decided to start with a rare word. I googled "superbity" and got a few hundred results, then I spotted a summary result that included the phrase "faggish superbity". I googled those words, and got one result. This approach doesn't always work. One problem is that words you think are rare often aren't. They might be common in medical jargon, or they might be a band name, or the title of a novel, or something. Sometimes a word that is rare in use is popular just because it sounds cool, so there are lots of websites that use it. Perfect example: "quidnunc". The other annoying problems are wannabe web portals that create seach pages for every phrase they come across, and wordlists.

The following search returns 147 results, all of them word lists:

http://www.google.com/search?q=commove+dysprosium

For that reason, slang and misspelled words are a better bet.

Hmm, interesting. That points to another strategy, I think: one could try changing the configuration of one's browser, or one's google preferences, or what country's version of google one searches, because the results are slightly different for different settings.

I just wrote some strange words in google. And i came into one site and looked for 2 very very strange words. I looked in different sites and checked. GoogleWhacking is kind of pointless in the sense that you will only be able to GoogleWhack newer phrases that have not been "discovered" yet. There are sites that post GoogleWhacks and thus, if Google has crawled them, you will find at least two results for your phrase.

That's the number I'm getting now. I think it depends on what Google Server you get. Upon going to www.google.com, you randomly get connected to any one of Google's servers.

I thought it was a bit amusing, so I figured I'd join in on the fun. It only took me a few tries to get one, but I think I wouldn't be able to continue doing this. XD

I typed in "cockchafer fruit" and got one hit (link removed 'cause it won't work anyway). Thank goodness for random words taught by peers/teachers. For anyone that is wondering: no, that is not a bad word (though it is rather suggestive) - it's actually a type of beetle that destroys plants. When I previewed my post, it censored it out, so that's a heads-up for people who think I've done something unintelligent.

edit: Darn, it looks like editing this post is the only way the word/link is visible/functioning. I'm not sure if it'd be smart to find a way past the censor, so I'll just leave this be. For anyone that'd like to see the word, look up "May bug" on Wikipedia.

scorpio's right... as googlewhacking doesn't whack google for long... it'll get to these whacker's and add them to it's list & presto... there are two or more results!!!!

Also... to get these single-word or double-word google whacks, just think of a really tough non-existing word... single-word whackings are rare, but dual-word has to be child's play....
1)search for results of a tough word;
2)look in the results for another word found only in one of the results...
3)add that word to the previous word and u get to whack google's @$$ Wink

Okay, I've got a question now: I assumed that if something was in the dictionary, it would always be highlighted in the status bar at the top of the search, or appear with "[definition]" highlighted next to it, but just now, I searched for "peshwari", and it wasn't highlighted. Then I searched for "pashwari", and it prompted me with "Did you mean: peshwari". That suggests to me that "peshwari" is in the dictionary after all, even though it doesn't offer a definition. Is that right, or is the database used for the "Did you mean" thing considered to be different from the dictionary?
Scorpio
No, the suggestion is offered by google for everything from a dictionary word to a local name.. The suggestion doesnt indicate it is in the dictionary..

Thats why google is able to offer suggestions for any name or anything else you mispell.. If it was restricted to the dictionary, you wouldn't get those suggestions.

The ironic thing about this is when you post your words on this thread, they become a 2nd result on google... or in this case the first result.

In fact, you could cheat the system. Just pick two randomly eccentric words and post them on this thread consecutively, then make your own result by searching for an exact phrase.

I think it's meant to be actual words that you can pull up from a dictionary, not website links.

This game can get addicting, but when you tell someone the search you gave, it's just ruined as it speads to other websites and gets indexed.

That was easy, admittedly they're not actual words that you'll find in the dictionary but it works. Only took one minute

Wow, this sounds fun!
I don't think I've ever tried "google wacking" before (is that what you called it?!)
Although I have typed in a search on google and gotton only one result before--except that was only because I typed in the actual name of a certain website, which probably doesn't count!
As for trying to find excactly six hundred and sixty six searches, I'm sure that would be even more impossible! However, I sure someone could do it if they really tried.
I wonder if someone could get exactly one million results? That would be really cool. Very Happy

When I look up my name in Google, I find that there's some 20-year old guy out there that does Tattoo art, totally unlike me. Sad I don't like tattoos (no offence), but it's just totally unlike me. My name gives a ton of results for some reason. My name must be common.

OK, well:

  • Search for 2 dictionary words in Google
  • There must be only 1 result
  • Word Lists are not allowed as results
  • The result cannot be a 'Supplimental Result'
    And I think that's all

Oh yeah, if you put a '+' in front of the words, you usually get better results (it tells Google that that word is required)

Heh, this is pretty fun. I'd heard of this before, but never tried it.

Congratulations! One of the only ones posted here that actually is a proper Googlewhack! You should record that at http://googlewhack.com/whack.pl if you haven't already Wink

Whoahly crap is this hard !! I just gave it a go myself (I didn't really try it yet) and I'm still sitting here thinking of new words to use to get only ONE result. The only one that I got very close to was only 5 results, with a few of them I believe are only wordlists, which don't qualify. Rolling Eyes

I think I'm going to sit here for a long time until I get just one result.

This isn't a googlewhack, but it's a game I played using google -- to find who are the most trusted, and untrusted people, I did searches for "never trust a X", where X was a profession or nationality. Seems Germans do badly ("never trust a German" returns 2,200 results), but Slovakians are all right "never trust a Slovakian" got only one result. Okay, the logic is not sound, but it was fun for five minutes.

It's kind of a sillier version of the "rocks-sucks-o-meter":

or the slut-o-meter:

I am not sure if any of you know about this. But there is this game called google whacking.

Objective: To enter a search term in google which provides exactly one result and one result only.
Not less not more.

Has anyone tried this. Why dont you guys give it a shot?

And tell me if you can get it? Gives one a chance to think Very Happy

alright scorpio, i have a beef with you. i meant to just come on frihost, post a couple replies and so forth... then i stumbled upon this thread. 'oh, google whacking, what could this be?' then i went to the site and found out exactly what it was and tried to find my own google whack.

after wasting an hour searching for these tiny corners of the internet, i have no google whack to call my own. nevermind the fact that i don't have a google whack, i'm also extremely frustrated!

it was fun though. i'll probably go back to it in 5 minutes. Very Happy

Ever sence I first read this post I have unconciously google whacking. And now I am excited that I have found 2 words that result in 1 result in my everyday research. I found a reference that stated that the Hopi word for moon was the same word the Tibetans use for sun. In trying to prove this statement I looked up the word moon in a Hopi-English dictionary and found it to be muuya. I then was trying to discover the word in tibetan language so I did a search for "muuya tibetan" and BAM all of a sudden I am side-tracked into google whacking Smile I am so thrilled hehehe..

Well done, I've always avoided Googlewhacking because I tried it for an hour once and realised I could spend many more. But, inspired by this thread I just had a go and got one on my second try. Confused

I did one about 3 years ago it was shoehorn+....
can't actually remember the 2nd word Confused
For all those people using quotation marks, this is not allowed in googlewhacking.
Mr_CEO
What was stupid! You mentioning it on these forums has given it a second result!!!

I guess having an official site that logs them and posts them up really cancels that one out, stopping other people using it. Making it harder as you go along!

Maybe Google should have an official Google Whacking site, like you type in a search term and it might say "These keywords have been Whacked!" and include a link.

Google Whacking?

Oh, on first glance I thought that probably had something to do with turning your google moderately safe search off!

But when I found out what the game is, I thought to myself, "This is the most inane thing I have ever seen," so of course I had to try it out.
I thought... hmmm, two dictionary words?
The first two that came to my mind (I was still thinking about google whacking) were "Truly Unremarkable".

So what's the Truly Unremarkablest website out there?

This one:

http://www.google.com/search?q=truly+unremarkablest&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

Yay, I got one on my first try!
