I have recently come into the world of web hosting and I am curious to see what it takes to make my computer in to its own server. This, of course, would have numerous advantages but I'm not sure how to go about it. I know I have to activate some things within windows XP, but on top of that I am not sure where to go. If anyone can give me some starting tips or recommend some books, it would be greatly appreciated.
Creating your own server
this website is pretty good

but i think the most problematic thing are the domains...still have no idea how to do it till now =)

I'm not sure of what books are available, but the Apache Foundation (http://www.apache.org) has some good tips for running thier software on a win32 platform, as well as links for downloads. A must for running a local server (any type of server), is proper DNS records, there are many companies that offer free dynamic DNS hosting, and I have had great success with a Company called Dynu (http://www.dynu.com/), they offer both free and paid services and they refresh thier database quite often.
Other software you may want to look into is:
PERL - http://www.activestate.com/
MySQL - http://www.mysql.com/
Downloads for both are available for use on a win32 system.
I run a few differant servers in differant protocals locally for testing purposes and it is not as difficult as you would think...even with windows. Sorry I could be more helpful with online informational resources, but I may be able to help you if you run into any troubles. Just PM me and I will do what I can to help.
Good luck and have fun!
