error: Can't connect to local mysql server through socket

ammonkc
I keep getting this error.
"can't connect to local mysql server through socket in '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock'"
when I install mysql the mysql.sock file IS in '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock'. but after I reboot the system, the mysql.sock file dissappears and thats when I start to get this error. why would the socket file disappear like that?

I set up the mysql via .rpm on redhat linux. when I set it up and set the grant tables, everything worked fine. but the next day i rebooted the server and I get this error. I have no idea why it would work when I finished configuring it the first time, but won't work after a reboot.
can anyone help me out with this one.

I've had had some similar problems too (I'm on FC4)

1- Didn't you deleted some big file in /var/lib/mysql ?
2- what are the rights on the file mysql.sock ?

The solution, i've found was to make a copy of the rest of my /var/lib/mysql
directory and then reinstall the RPM and then I puted back the files I backed up.

Hope this helps Smile
