It is illegal if you are going to play music (in most countries, and except if you pay but you said free)
I'll warn you now, if you're planning on using your home computer you'll need an awful lot of upload bandwidth.

OK, a lot of you were asking how I set up the streaming radio on my site.
So, now I will tell thee!
You need 2 things;
1.) A Streaing Media Client
2.) A Streaing Media Server
The first is easy, there are a few out there but the most popular and the one I use is "SAM2 Broadcaster" (found here, official site here).
It should be noted that this requires a MySQL database set up to run.
Once set up you then need to configure your server details and off you go, the program interface does its best to emulate the normal controls on a real life mixing desk.
You can also get a Winamp plugin which simply streams your Winamp output to the server (sorry, no link) but to me it seemed very buggy since it crashed when I tried to test it.
The second is much more difficult. There aren't that many servers out there for streaming audio. Most of them are paying only and there is only one free provider I have found (FreeCast)
The way I got around this is to have a friend of mine run the server on his high bandwidth (1.5Mbps) line.
There are a few types of server - Live356, Icecast and Shoutcast. These have their own particular quirks but essentially all do the same thing.
It's like the difference between Apache and OmniHTTP.
Anyway that's it. Any questions go for it.
