Britain has been secretly designing a new nuclear warhead in conjunction with the United States, provoking a legal row over the proliferation of nuclear weapons, a media report claimed in London on Sunday.
The government has been pushing ahead with the programme while claiming that no decision has been made on a successor to Britain's Trident nuclear deterrent, The Sunday Times reported.
Work on a new weapon by scientists at the Atomic Weapons Establishment at Aldermaston in Berkshire has been underway since Tony Blair was re-elected as prime minister last May, and is now said to be ahead of a similar US research, the report claimed.
The aim, according to the report, is to produce a simpler device using proven components to avoid breaching the ban on nuclear testing. Known as the Reliable Replacement Warhead, it is being designed so that it can be tested in a laboratory rather than by detonation, the paper said.
'We've got to build something that we can never test and be absolutely confident that, when we use it, it will work,' one senior British source told the newspaper.
The secret programme to build a new warhead in close cooperation with the Americans will spark anger among Labour opponents of any replacement of the Trident programme, which is estimated to have cost about 10 billion pounds.
Developing a new weapon would also be a material breach of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. The office of Lord Goldsmith, the Attorney-General, refused to comment on whether it had been asked for legal advice by the 10, Downing Street. |

I do agree however that most english people are hypercrites including myself sometimes. The UK is not going to blow up something without a good reason but I think that we shouldn't have weapons of mass destruction, no country should.
Countries should have weapons of mass destruction, they should just be very careful on how and when they use them. I am hopeful they will not come to the need to use them, though. I think they contribute to stopping a war from happening because of their threat. No country wants to attack one that can fire nukes at them as a last resort...
But why shoudl countries have Nuclear Weapons in the first place ? If no countries had them then there'd be no need for any, will there ?
The UK should be disarming like they agreed to do under the NPT. Developing new nuclear weapons is not only against public opinion around the world, and morally wrong, it is the opposite of what they agreed to do. How can a country like the UK expect others (like Iran for example) keep the NPT when they don't follow it themselves?
I personally don't agree with the proliferation of nuclear weapons in ANY fashion. Ban them all and alot of us will sleep better at night. I think the author of this thread is reading alot more into this by suggesting that the UK and the US may be heading for another cold war. I just don't see that as happening.
Having a shi*load of nuclear weapons isn't a deterant either, neither is having a newer, bigger and better one. When you stop to think of the inevitable outcome of any nuclear confrontaion it is patently absurd to think anybody is actually "in the lead". It's kinda like two men in a closed room up to thier waists in gas, one has 2 matches the other has 3 matches....is either one of them ahead or lagging behind the other guy?
It's not the country that has 10,000 nuclear weapons we have to worry about, it's that one nimrod who has only one that we have to be frightened of.
Probably anti-U.S. propaganda, like everywhere else in the world. And why do people hate us? They believe the lies. This is *quite* similar to the liberal media we are force fed here at home, democratic brainwashing.

Unfortunatly you are correct here manumiglani, the US governemnt has had a long and dubious history of having a very well defined double standard. It is not limited just to the situation in Iraq, this is just the latest in a very long line of attempts by the government to interfere in the inner politics of a foreign nation. In Vietnam the Johnson administration, and later the Nixon admin., were placing leaders in power in that country then either removing them when they didn't do exactly as told, or having them asassinated out right. There have been many other occasions before and since then as well. I think you will agree with me that you really can't hold the citizens of a country responsible for the actions of thier leader(s), unless of course they are supporting them wholeheartedly. As long as one remains on this earth, Everyone has this urge to possess one to protect their interest. The UK and Nukes? Well every Security Council members has them. Your just not a Council Member up to the level if you dont got one.
