There is currently a College Teacher Strike on right now in Ontario, Canada and I just curious as to what people opinions are on the subject.
As a student, I will admit, it is nice to have a little more time off, but on the other hand I am spending a lot of money to not get tought right now. I know they have a union and the right to be treaded fairly but a what cost to the students. They should have to convice the students and have us vote to see if they strike; now that would be something.
In all seriousness, what are your thoughts.
haha, stupid teachers.
when i was at York University, the TA's and GA's union went on strike for 2 months straight. (on a semester system, yes, that's a LONG time, it was more than half the course for the semester). No we did not get money back. They essentially picketed outside the school and stopped cars from entering the grounds, letting 1 car in every 10 minutes (by law that's the max they can do).
But the professors were NOT on strike. Many of us still had to get to class if our professor was a dick (and most of them were
)
Thankfully we had most of the major essays and exams cancelled and our marks going into the strike pretty much determined our credits.
But see, by pissing off the students ROYALLY with 2 hour lineups to go park the damn car, they turned all the students off their cause. I remember those damn retards walking up to my window and telling me who to write letters to to support their strike! I just glared at them, put my hand on the horn, and just held it down till they shut up and walked away.
And they were trying to be all noble by saying their job has no security, they could be fired any year (NOT day! year, they're guaranteed the year), and they don't get paid enough ($30 an hour to mark essays in your spare time?!?? wtf!). Meanwhile I'm working in a convinience store for $7/hr with a boss who threatens to fire me every day!!
I HATE UNIONS.
I go to York Universtiy now, fortunately they are not on strike.
Colleges and universities are in a tight spot these days. Funding is down, so they have to make up for it. They usually start by increasing housing rates, then tuition and administrative pay cuts/freezes, then faculty pay cuts/freezes. Most administrative employees are not unionized, so they just have to deal with it. Faculty, though, are considered professionals, and are usually unionized.
If they feel that they are not being payed fairly for their expertise, then they have a right to strike. Is it fair to the students who are paying a lot of tuition for an education? No. But that's not really a factor, is it?
Just hope it gets resolved quickly and enjoy the time off.
I heard it was only colleges on strike
Well, I'd say, SCHOOL'S OUT!

you must not be paying for school. you go to college and university to GET an education, unlike highschool where the education is forced down your throats. If you've paid money and want to learn, it's quite annoying when they go on strike. Teachers (at least for SURE in ontario, can't say for sure elsewhere) got it really really good. Sure kids are draining but for the amount of money, benefits, and time off they get, it's a retardedly cushy job. The union leaders just like to strike to show they're still around and deserve their union fees
Just out of curiosity, do any of the schools efected by these strikes give the students any kind credit for the time they are not being taught in the form of a refund or $$$ credit towards the next semester?
I would think that would only be fair under the circumstances, after all they [the students] are paying for a service they are not receiving.
The strike has been going for a week now. Currently they are not even in discussion. It looks like we're in for the long haul. I'm just wondering what's going to happen when we do go back.
I hope the teachers get what they want because if they did this for nothing then what the hel was the point.

Think about this.
Do you hate unions because you aren't making 30/hour?
Do you wish everyone else was making 7/hour? If you don't like them "getting away with that rate, why don't you go to the management and offer to grade the tests for 7/hour. When you see some hungry kids on the street, just think how you did them a favor.

You sound foolish. Try minimizing the profanity, and leaving "retards" alone, as I doubt they have done anything to you.
Also, a one year contract, that isn't guarenteed to be renewed, is not secure.
hah
in some regions of Germany teachers were striking too. But it's truelly nothing cool - we r loosing our important lessons ; \
Why must people always go on strike over money. If you dont like how much your paid, Go get a job somewhere else. No one forced you to work. You just have to. But to go on strike everytime your contract expires or hasnt been renewed is going too far dont you guys think.
well it took three whole weeks, and the strike if finally off. Back to classes we go. Because of the three weeks off the college is going to extend the semester another week, which I guess is something.
I don't disagree with unions or striking if it is done for the right reasons and in a civil manor. Unfortunately one person actually died. A picketer was hit by a car because they were civil enough to jump in front of the car, trying to stop the driver from crossing the picket line.
All I can say to this is: upholding deals and priciples is great thing to do, just make sure you remember to pack your brain and take it along for the trip.
Well, for those of you who thought 3 weeks off for a strike sounded pretty good, how does 5weeks crammed into two. Almost all of my class hours are being made up with evening classes.
Part of me is glad to make up the hours because I believe there is valuable things that I might have missed. The other part of me, however, is upset because the strike didn't even settle anything in the end; all that they did was screw thousands of students out of time and money.
I have been in the education area long enough to know that no one wins in a strike. The students lose because they do not receive the education they need, whether it is k-12 school or college. Teachers will never make a decent living, as long as we value American idol, sport stars, movie stars and WWF more than education. You pay for the things you value and we do not value education.
