Did everyone else hear about that cheerleader (Kristi Yamaoka) who fell on her head after being thrown in the air during a Southern Illinois college basketball game? She apparently broke her neck or something and got a concussion. Yet in a Braveheart moment of courage she began to cheer as she was wheeled away strapped down on a stretcher. 1st off, she's extremely hot, and somewhat local to me
( a few hours way), but 2ndly, how can cheerleaders believe what they're doing actually matters to people? She said in a coment that she cheered because she heard their band playing and wanted to encourage fans to get involved or something. I could understand if she cheered to let her family know she was alright or something, but for me this just brought up a larger question, do cheerleaders matter in sports... at all. For me, when I was on the basketball court the only time they caught my attention is when I was off the court, or running into them after a lay-up. What are your thoughts?
Kristi Yamaoka Cheerleading Accident
Contrary to ignorant belief, cheerleading is a little bit more than standing on the sidelines in short skirts and shaking pompoms in the air. There are actual competitions, that require actual work.
Consider looking it up next time.

Maybe not for the basketball players, but they need to pump the crowd up. I have a firm belief that we lost out district basketball last night because the cheerleaders were so unenthusiastic, and that made the crowd unenthusiastic, which then made the basketball team unenthusiastic.
It's the cheerleaders that start the cheering, then the basketball players hear all that cheering for them, and it makes them play better. The cheering helped me in football.
I think their job is pretty important, and have you ever watched competitive cheerleading? That's pretty intense!

There was that film about it and everything.
Not that I saw it or anything...

Don't be ashamed to admit to seeing it. There was lots of eye candy in that movie.

Gabrielle Union is gorgeous.
I'm a guy and I'm not ashamed to admit I watched it, there were plenty of fine girls (their attitudes sucked though). Plus, for some reason, Kirsten Dunst attracts me... not that I can spell her name right or anything.
I remember seeing comercials for that movie, cheerleaders never seem as stiff when depicted on television as they are in real life, and their shouts sound prettier too.
I guess that makes sense that cheerleaders indirectly influence the game by influencing the crowd. But the crowd can pretty much influence themselves too, and the ability of the players also, and the neighborhood drunkards can really get it going. But yeah I guess they could fill their purpose then.
