I want to have a private membership area for a web site I am working on now. I would members once they login to be able download ebooks, etc.
how do I stop others from back dooring the url and how do I grant access only once to download the product?
I have access to Bravnets password gate which is free.Is there any better free options?

There will be literally thousands of PHP scripts out there that do this but the easier way would be to (assuming your host uses CPanel or similar) use the "password protect directory" feature in your control panel.

Indeed then when people try to list the index of the dir it will just say forbidden. I hate this when I try to go around to websites, but it makes it a heck of alot more secure. You could also use session vars like session_start() and $_SESSION[] array.
