Free DNS help, please

DoctorBeaver
I've just read a post about free DNS services & 1 that I've seen rocommended in a few places is afraid.org
But what is it? I've been to have a look and, to be honest, I don't understand a word of it. Is it a hosting site? If I register a name there, do I have to host my site elsewhere and use something at afraid.org to point to it? I know what DNS is, but I just don't understand the function of that particular site.
Any explanations greatly appreciated.
Tumbleweed
I use no-ip.com I have a free dns with them , but I only use the web-redirect function at the moment..... if you have a program (some p2p appz for example) that require an ip number , rather than put your number in you can put a DNS ...... at the moment my DNS is set to web redirect so rather than typing http://tumbleweed.frih.net/TuMbLeWeeDs-CoRnEr.html
I can type http://tumbleweed.no-ip.org
its a little easier for ppl to remember (and by that I mean me Razz)

Simple steps to follow:

1. You register an account with them [FreeDNS]

2. Click the "Registry" link at the left sidebar (For Members)

3. Find and select a domain that you would like to create your subdomain from.
e.g. You select us.to, then you could have a subdomain like: doctorbeaver.us.to

4, Input your login credentials

5. Fill-up the form:
Type: NS
Subdomain: <whatever name you like (without the www, e.g. doctorbeaver)>
Domain: <leave it be>
Address: ns1.frihost.net (Server 1) or ns1.frih.net (Server 2)

6. Save
7. (not required but is a must) Click the "[ add ]" link and repeat steps 5 and 6 but , instead, use ns2.frihost.net (Server 1) or ns2.frih.net (Server 2)
Note: You should see two entries under the domain us.to after doing step 7.

8. Login to cPanel or DirectAdmin then add the "domain" that you have just setup.
e.g. doctorbeaver.us.to (without the www at the start)
9. Wait for some time....

And that's it. Wink

It's OK. I've now registered a domain at .go.uc
That 1 was easier to understand.
Thanks anyway

Personally, I use dydns.com. They not only provide DNs services, but a number of extras too. There are two types of account, one of which is free. I have used the free services for both Static DNS servers, and also Dynamic DNS servers. They've never let me down, not even once, in over 2 years.

Of course, there are a ton of them out there, so choose away. This is just a personal recommendation.

Why do you need to make 2 subdomains?
(cause I already have 4 other subdomains registered, can't have one more.)

Will it still work of I only use ns1.frihost.net? (I am on server 1.)

It will still work, but it is not recommended. Usually for a domain you should have at least 2 nameservers in different machines (the more the better), but I don't think everybody follows...

Nothing and no one prevents you from registering another FreeDNS account, right? Wink
I actually have three FreeDNS accounts, as far as I can remember.
