Hi everyone, I'm gonna graduate soon in a few months with an acounting degree. So I've already started my job search and am thinking of a few options. Do you guys think that entering auditing is a good start for me to gain a strong foundation?
And is going to any of the big 4 similar in terms of environment and culture? Or should I just accept the first big 4 that offers me a job? Thanks!
And btw, I'm not considering smaller firms in my search. I know people say I can learn more stuff but I'm looking at a faster option.
personally, i think auditing is a great place to start. my accounting teacher started off as an auditor and then became a chartered accountant.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by the above but i'll give it a try - if you get a job offer from 1 of the big 4, i would say to take it! at least if you find that you dont like auditing, you can always change departments. if you were to go to one of the smaller firms, their business may only be focused on one area, and you would therefore have to change employers if your likes change.
you would also find with the smaller firms that your experience would touch on all aspects of accounting, and would not allow you to specialise in one particular area.
hope this has helped your decision making!
Hey thanks alot for your view. What I meant by going to the Big 4 is that their interview periods are different and if accepted, the offer only lasts for a week or so. So its a case of deciding without even having a comparison. My lecturer told me to take the first that comes too...I'll see how it goes.
Anyway, I'm planning to do my icaew's....look tough but its more of a business degree. Something I'm really interested in rather than purely accounting.
SOX and Corp Accounting is a catchy field u want to check out...it pays good money....
Yay for accounting!! I graduated with a mangement degree but I have an accounting minor. It all depends on what you want to do. I've worked for two private companies doing general accounting (not cost) and I've LOVED them both. I picked this route, because I couldn't picture myself doing the same thing (auditing) every single day. This is also why I didn't do the CPA route. What state do you live in? Did you consider your CPA?
Yeah, I'd love to do more consulting work rather than purely auditing too. But it seems that its kind of a pre-requisite where i'm from. Gain experience they all say..haha.

More or less you can expect them all to be the same. I am not sure though. Here, that's in Greece, PWC is the best in terms of money. Though, I would not concentrate too much on money for my first job, and in terms of opportunities and prospects of continuing education all big 4 are very good.
Ok, I'm in KPMG...in the financial advisory division. But I'll be attached to the audit dept for a period of time so it'll give me lots of experience i hope. Wish me luck..
computeraki : Yeah, money is not my main focus, I'm more concerned on the learning opportunities, environment, and of course an enjoyable job(or at least one with various things to experience.)
