Im 17, next year i can legally start drinking (UK). But i doubt it will lol, ive never drank so far, and neither has my girlfriend, we've both tried it at family things nstuff, and didnt like it. We both agree there isnt really much point in it, waste your money to get wasted and then forget it all by the next day. I dont even mean like going out to get drunk. I dont really see the point of it...ever loll.
Some people say it relax's them, i dont need it to relax me, i can relax in other ways. All in all, i dont see the point in drinking. Dont flame me for saying it, its my opinion and i want to know all of yours! Everyones told me, oh just wait till your older then you'll wanna drink. But i really dont see myself doing it. (Btw, im not a wee stuck up person thats all like tea total. I just dont thnk its really needed).

I've always been truly disgusted with people who drink soley to get drunk, and seeing as how I'm college at the moment - there are a lot of people who do that. It's a waste of brain cells.
I'm not a drinker, the most I've ever drank in a year is maybe twice, and it was wine both times.
I don't like people who claim themselves are drinker neither the people who say that if you don't drink you are uncool. I like to drink because it's a little pleasure for me, when we have a party or something like that. But i never drink too much or to make myself drunk.
Anyway, I don't flame the drinkers, you do whatever you want but if you drink too much, that can be a drug like cigarettes.
I'm not a drinker either. Was out clubbing (ABC, Glasgow) last night, and only had about 3 bottes of beer in the place.
Alcohol, basically, is a waste of money, and people who drink to get drunk have a problem, aspecially if they do this at home, by themselves. People who drink stuff despite not actually likeing it are veven worse! Also, people who fall asleep when they get drunk, and yet get in this state at the weekends, really annoy me. It's just selfish, making themselves a burden on their frinds who feel they need to keep an eye on them. People should know their limits!
And Breath...
Yet, I love whiskey! It's the water of life!...

Yah, if you don't feel like drinking, don't do it. If you do, then try it. Moderation is key. Just be safe:)
I feel that it's OK to drink on family events, but it is not OK to get wasted and then end up an alcoholist.
I believe that a glass of wine should just spice things up, not ruin your life later.
I haven't yet because I'm only 18, but I don't see a problem if you're 21 and pop open a beer while watching a game or something. It's when you drink just to get drunk and do it every night which is stupid IMO.
Drink is drink, nowthing wrong with occasionally wanting to get drunk, getting drunk and becoming a **** often is something that is very bad. I personally think that in america you have a bigger problem as by some people it is idolised becuase the drinking age is 21, and I remember when I was 13-16 I thought alcohol was cool, and it was great that I could drink it, because I was underage. Now I am old enough I realise that there is nothing special about alcohol a beer is nice, but thats about it, the only reason i really drunk was becuase it was forbidden and that was the main attraction. I also do get drunk sometimes, when I feel like it but they are often for one reason or another, which everybody goes through.
I don't have a problem with drinking, and I see no reason why people who want to drink shouldn't do so. Obviously moderation is important otherwise you will end up as a drunken fool, but I enjoy a good drink whenever necessary. Not that I get a lot of occasions to do so at the moment, being up early every morning makes it a little difficult.
I'm 21 and in college. Drinking to get a good buzz is great imo. My mood lightens up and i'm much more relaxed. I do it on occasion each weekend after a long week of school and work. Some good mexican food, a margarita, and my girlfriend sitting across from me never fails to cheer me up.
However, getting wasted is another story, unless your idea of a good time is sailing the 7 seas.
I tasted it and thought it was the most disgusting thing. So I probably won't drink hardly at all. I don't like the fact that at my high school, drinking is a HUGE problem. The teachers know it, the coaches know it, even the prinicipal knows it - yet none of them do anything. One cheerleader got caught for minor in possession and all she did was sit out for like 1 game.
The school just doesn't care if they're drinking, smoking, out having sex, whatever... So long as they come to school and make practices. It's a shame really, and the only reason everyone does it is because the "cool" kids do it and you have to drink to be "popular." We've already lost 5 students this year though, all to auto accidents, but luckily drinking hasn't been a factor in any of them... I hope it never is, I hope things like that end.
My impression of alcohol is VERY VERY bad indeed.
Getting drunk is the most pointless social exercise on the face of the planet.
I am going to say straight out that people who drink to get drunk are complete idiots. It's that simple. Why waste your money and your body on doing something which you won't remember the next day? And what for? A hangover, possibly an STD, getting into a car accident or falling off a building or something. I have a friend who woke up with a broken arm because she jumped off her roof while drunk and she didn't remember it happening.
There's nothing wrong with having an odd drink to relax or to enjoy the taste - drinking in such a fashion that you retain your senses and can still control your speech and manners (albeit with maybe a small relaxation of your timidity).
Getting drunk is NOT 'cool' and never will be. If getting drunk was cool then tell that to all the families in the world which have been destroyed or broken apart because of alcohol abuse.
You drunkards make me sick.
Love from David
It's an individuals right to drink if he or she wants to. It's funny how something as dangerous as alcohol is legal and "socially acceptable", but smoking a joint will get you arrested and give you a criminal record that will hound you all your life.
I have no love loss for a diehard drunk, but some people can handle a few drinks without becoming obnoxious...they are few and far between though.
I'm 17 as well. I believe alcohol screws up your judgement. Although I've never really had it either, most people have basic education about it.
I also believe that if you drink and drive, you should have your car taken away.
As long as you aren't drinking all the time, or only to get drunk, I don't think there's much of a problem with it. Although I'm always dissapointed to see my friends doing this type of thing.
Its fine with me. just like what the moderator says, "moderation is the key" anything in excess is not good at all. Remember that there are health benefits in drinking alcohol. when people drink, it doesn't mean that they are going to get drunk and stuff. If you drink in the rigth time and the right place then there's nothing wrong with that. I am saying this because there are those who pass judgement on people who drink without considering their reasons. Think more carefully dudes.

Very well said, but moderation becomes more difficult with the more you drink. It's viscious circle no matter how you look at it.
One beer just gives me a head ache. Three beers makes me smile and shrug off stress. Six beers makes me pee way too many times. Eight or more just gives me a head ache.
Whiskey? uhhhgggahhh
The last go round with the hard stuff left me paralized in my drive way (no I wasn't driving
) in a puddle of what had been my dinner with my wife cursing at me spraying me with a garden hose.

Sounds like you had too much, IMHO.
Alcohol is a drug, just like medicine or toxic drugs. It has a limit, and if you overdose you could kill yourself. There are side effects, there are good effects of alcohol. Just be conscious of all these and with some balance it should be fine (and of course, it feels great
)

I think this is all about it when you are young, after you cross that age it loses importance. Now the problem is when you are through this age having troubles at home, school etc. Many people see alcohol as a way out, since, like drugs alcohol make you lose conscience and "forget" there is when the problems start. But we cannot forget that not everybody has the same strength to face problems.
Some parties require some alcohol to get things really going. Some people just wont dance without some alcohol in their blood. I live in holland and go to parties regularly. Some people just cant stop drinking and thats a bit annoying. Some people are just so drunk they cant walk are talk.
Some alcohol isnt to bad, but just keep some limit.
I'm 13 and i have tryed alcohol, i just had a sip and didnt really like it........to me that Was just to see if i liked it..........i Wont be trying again too soon
I don't belive that governments have the right to control people from drinking alcohol. It's not right to say that you can kill yourself with fat fried food but you cant drink alcohol. It should be up to someones parents and then when they are old enough in their parents view, up to them
Alcohol as always been a touchy topic for me. I don't have much problems with it, but quite a few people in my family are friends with him, and although I've never had to put up with their drunkness, it has been one of the reasons I've come to dislike it.
There are other reasons as well, of course. First of all, I don't quite like it, I usually drink to satisfy thirst (except for beverages) and I can't quite do that with alcohol. Second I don't like the side effects, and I'm not even talking about being drunk, I don't like the regular effects of a couple glasses (I'm a responsible driver and I know what little is needed to alter your perception somewhat) ... third, it costs too much and I don't think it's worth it. As all my points, the last one is completely subjective. If you drink, have fun and try not to drive .. if you don't, juices are really good ;).

take a little drink is good for your healthy
while when you drink much
you'd fill sick
and after drink
you'd find you're the other one
little alcohol is good for healthy, but I cannot agree the people that sotting.
some people drink for "high", or "cool", but I think they are drink for "trouble".
I enjoy a drink and occasionally I even enjoy getting a little drunk, of course as with everything moderation is the key. I don't enjoy being around people who can't handle their drink, you need to know your limits. Getting drunk once or twice and making an a#*! of themself I'll forgive but more than that and I consider it a problem.
Modern western society lacks any specific rituals to mark the passage into adulthood, especially for young men. The physical changes for women are often more pronounced. Teenage guys are left to try and prove themselves men while at the same time being engaged in heavy socialisation with a peer group as a means of identity formation. For a lot of teenagers, especially males, binge drinking is a rite of passage.
The problem is this kind of competitive drinking often translates into dangerous behaviour, as if teenage males weren't already prone enough to that, and can turn into alcoholism later in life. Alcoholism is an addiction, with its own unique list of symptoms, essentially no different from Heroin addiction or any other but that doesn't mean nobody should drink or enjoy alcohol. People get addicted to painkillers, should we ban aspirin?
As I get older I enjoy a glass of wine with dinner and I'm told it's even good for the heart but don't feel the need to prove anything to anyone.
Eh i dont' know. I would have to say i want to be able to have an occasional drink. But i don't think i would ever want to get drunk. I dont' want to deal with hang overs and pukeing and all that. This is what i think of bear.
There are however stuff like rum and coke which is pretty good because of different flavors i.e vanilla rum. Having mixed drinks is what i would want.
Even when I was doing the club thing I never drank. Even before I was conferted to a religion that says not to drink I never drank. I have tried to, but the idea of losing control is not something I like.
Drinking is okay in moderation. I'm 17 also, but I can't legally drink until I am 21 (I'm in the USA).
I have read in this thread a few people saying that an occasional drink is actually good for you....is this a fact? If so how is it actually good for you? Forgive my ignorance here, but I didn't think there was really any good to drinking. I find it hard to believe that something that is the cause of so many deaths every year can be good for you in any way.
I have been known to be wrong though. Please enlighten me people.

Yea the usa sucks when it comes to ages on things. Look at Irland, if you can get up on the stole you can drink. I want to leagly have a drink here.
Some studies have shown that red wine contains antioxdants? or some such that thin the blood in a way similar to aspirin which in turn lowers the risk of heart disease.
Of course this benefit is outweighed by the damage that excessive drinking does to the body. A standard glass every day or two is considered the max to still be beneficial.
I enjoy having a drink once in a while. I am a social drinker: I never drink alone (oh actually, I did once, to relax and study, and it was a very enjoyable styding time).
I'm aware that, sometimes, I do get drunk. But I've never been drunk enough to feel sick the morning after. So I guess I know my limits.
I don't really enjoy alcohol though. I prefer to keep a cold head. I hate people who go out and the first thing they say when entering a bar is: "Tonight I get drunk!"
This is stupid, people who drink too much, too fast can die from an ethylic coma.
I say drink at your own speed, and your own taste, and drink a lot of water at the same time. Drinking water will help you not having a bad headache the morning after, and it will make you think during the evening about the total count of drinks you've had.
i used 2 drink a lil... harly ever tho.....
ive been drunk on spirits... so ive given them up 4 life
ive been drunk on beer... so ive given them up 4 life
ive been drunk on wine... so ive given them up 4 life...
for me its a one time experience.... and its not worth the feelin in the mornin for me to go spendin my money on..... n my girl dont drink either

Ya, a recent study published in the Lancet (which I have usefully lost the link for) showed that there was in fact no benefit from drinking alcohol regularly. Although as you say, red wine has certain beneficial qualities, including being antibacterial in certain contexts.
Here's a pretty poem though :
When we drink, we get drunk.
When we get drunk, we fall asleep.
When we fall asleep, we commit no sins.
When we commit no sins, we go to Heaven.
So let's all get drunk, and go to Heaven.
Amen.
I'm in college. I'm talking about people getting wasted like there's no tomorrow. I'm talking about waking up at 3 am because some guy just fell down the stairs and made a bunch of noise doing it.
I'm a prohibitionist. I believe that alcohol is a drug that really impairs judgement and leads to a lot of crime and overall destruction. Now I'm not naive enough to believe that one day we can ban alcohol, and I'm not really opposed to other people having a drink now and then. What really pisses me off is when people get wasted and have no idea what they're doing. Then they start breaking stuff and throwing stuff and screwing people left and right and wake up the next morning covered in vomit. The worst happens when they drive.
Sometimes people say they'll drink but they won't drive. But alcohol does impair judgement and I question whether some of these people will still be able to make that decision when they're intoxicated.
That's why I stay away from alcohol. Period.

I'm Irish and that is not true...
Most alcohol-related deaths are due to excessive drinking or drink-driving or people who can't handle just a few pints.

I'm never sure which of these studies to believe. There seems to be one to prove everything. Maybe it's a case of the nature of the question being asked by the researchers affecting the outcome?
I've come to the realization that when I reach a milestone in my life where new doors open, I'm going to explore those doors. I hit 18 last month and went to the strip club, smoked, bought lottery tickets, went to an xxx store all that mess just because I can. When I hit 21 same goes for that. I'm going to get @#%*faced and maybe buy a gun in the process lol. I know I can buy a gun now but, I can't buy a pistol I don't think. I believe you have to be 21 in SC to buy a pistol which sucks
I don't dislike drinking, neither do i love drinking. I just drink on occasions, like functions.
Sometimes I just drink alone just for the fun of it. But everytime I drink, I limit myself to maybe 2-3 bottles, which isn't that bad, at least i don't get wasted.
its ok if you do it once in a while unless its like wine ... but its the people who drink and drive that need to die
I think drinking without the intent to get drunk is ok. Those people who only drunk because they want to get drunk shouldn'gt be doing it because it is dangerous.
The drinking age in the US sucks. You can drive and have sex for years before you can drink... wtf? I like the drinking age back home in the Bahamas, which is 18.
You dont' forget it all, unless you drink far, far, far too much.
Alcohol, despite tasting horrible, is simply there to remove your inhibitions and make socializing easier and more fun. Eventually you get drunk enough to the point where you don't mind the taste anymore. I think that's why I prefer harder liquors to beer: The sooner you get buzzed, the sooner you can stop drinking.
Of course, it's not necessary to have a good time.
You know what's funny? A lot of you advocates against alcohol will most likely change your tune once you reach college. I know some of my friends from back in high school who were strongly against alcohol then are now drink too.
Me, I started drinking although rarely in high school, but in college the atmosphere will change you. I've met a lot of new and good friends through drinking too.
I use to drink pretty much Wednesday's through Saturdays. Hehe, but now it's pretty most of the time I just indulge myself on Fridays and Saturdays.
On a positive note, drinking dark beers or red wines can be good for you if you do it moderately, such as once a day, since they DO contain antioxidants like someone above said which are good for you.
As a drunken irish rocker gamer geek, I believe that there really isn't much that actually supports drinking, but it is fun to get wasted when there is nothing better to do! When it comes to the whole Irish drinking stereotype, I think what we've done is amazing. We united an entire country through alchohol. To quote Lewis Black, "There is no AA, because every meeting in Ireland is at the pub." Hell, me and girlfriend met on a similar ground, Hard Lemonade. All kidding aside, though, I don't condone excessive drinking. I grew up with an abusive father who did nothing but drink and do cocaine all the time. It didn't stop me from drinking, though. It just showed me how to do things right. Do I really want to grow up like this man? No. So, I drink when it's apropriate, and have stayed off of cocaine. I can't say much for some other things I may do in my "spare time," but drinking is alot like many other things we look towards as "a wreck to humanity." Used responsibly, it's really fun. Used the wrong way, it's incredibly dangerous. I think it's really bad that we don't have more of a warning than "Please Drink Responsibly." Well, that's my stance.
im 16, and i drink a little bit when i am with my friends, i really dont like to get drunk because i get angry and say mean things when i really dont mean it.

I doubt that, I'm in college now, and my posistion against obsessively drinking remains. If someone's approach with their ideas on drinking changes just because of being placed in a new enviornment, then perhaps they weren't that hardset to begin with.

I always thought what you thought, Jeslyn, but I was the kid he's discribing. I did nothing remotely illegal in high school. When I got to college things changed. First, finding new friends who didn't drink proved to be quite impossible. Second, going out with my friends and not drinking was very difficult. I would always get asked and when I said I didn't drink I would get persecuted for it. You can stay strong for a while, but when you aren't doing well socialy, most people bend before they break. My school is a pretty big drinking school, so maybe that's part of it.
Never drink. You could die, get yellow teeth, have bad breath, and people will hate you.

I didn't say everyone will change, I just said most. Since majority of your peers WILL drink. It's more of a social pressure to try and fit in with the rest of the college kids. Legaly or illegaly. There are few and far that don't drink which is something I respect. However the niche for people who drink is a lot bigger then the ones that don't.

Hi all
If you dont feel the need to drink then don't you sound like a very mature person for your age and that is very rare in this day.
I grew up with an alcholic father and brother who were very violent when they drank and that scared me.
I swore to myself that I would never be like that and therefore for many yrs I banned anysort of alchol in my house. My first wedding there was no alchol supplied you had to bring your own.
I have since mellowed out and relise that having alchol around does not turn me into an alcholic.
I have had a drink when I am with family and friends having a bbq at my house max 2 drinks.
If you dont feel the need to drink then dont do it you dont need a drink to have a good time.

People who succumb to peer pressure.... Sigh.... It's so pathetic. People are too scared to be themselves for fear of not being accepted that they ignore their own standards and that is just weak.
My brother is the perfect example of someone who stands up for what he believes in. He recently moved into the country to attend a Film course at a University, and he makes it well known that he's a Christian and that he thinks people who get drunk are stupid. People RESEPCT him for it because he stands his ground and he gets along quite fine with everyone.
People who lower their standards because they succumb to pressure deserve to feel guilty about it for the rest of their lives. I know I feel like crap when I think about things I did when I gave in to peer pressure at school (drinking wasn't one of them) so adults should damn well know better.
People should drink only in moderation and only if they want to. If you don't then fine..The reason some people change their mind about drinking is that they were misinformed to begin with. Maybe they were taught that once a person drinks they turn into some kind of monster or shit. Not really true...Only those hardcore drunks.
I drank before I came to college, i'm still drinking while I'm here and i"m probably gonna continue. Thing is, I don't overdo it...so it's fine for me. Everyone should get seriously seriously drunk once till they puke all over themselves. Then they'll never do it again once they know the feeling of the morning after. Plus all the smell of the puke. Ughhh~
People may say "Drink is Drink"
Well my view is that Anything Good for health is good to be taken in small Amount
So small amount if taken is Good if taken as a Medicine or Health Drink then fine and not like Water!!
So Guys!! look for better Drinking Options like Milk , Cocunut Water , Butter Milk, Juices, They all are equally healthy and tasty!
Enjoy

Mmm... techincally, I guess I have succumbed to peer pressure, however I don't feel guilty about it. A lot of my best friends are people that I have met while drunk. So I guess with that point, I am pathetic. Although, I myself don't think so. It's pretty much a social norm especially in college. However, like I said, if you choose not to drink and stand for what you believe in, that IS admirable.
To each their own.
small amount each day, good to health and can lower the blood pressure.
large amount, damge to health , and damage to life too.
but i think some bars with light music are good place to visit.
man i dont even like the tast of alcohol and i am sure people who drink them dont actually like the tast, i mean if i can get drunk drinking orange juice i will do that but drinking something that doesnt tast good its just stupid
you lot are morons, you get used to beer the more u drink it, its ok to have a few pints, its only seriously bad for you when you start drinking every day, a glass of wine a day is good and its proven.
I personally like an ocasional drink out with friends, sometimes get a bit drunk but not often, but i dont go getting completly drunk and not remembering what happened the day before.
Alochol is fine as long as you drink it with your close friends and family. of course you shouldn't drink too much, and shouldn't drive afterwards and so on. but there is nothing wront with drinking. the problem starts when you drink on your own in a bar... and you are a girl... and you are 16... i dont need to tell you what can and will happen next. and that is not so good...
The alcohol companies wnat you to drink as they make a lot of money out of it. The government doesn't mind too much either because if you're out getting drunk then you are probably not trying to start a revolution. Alcohol is a pretty effective way of controlling the population - why do you think that Russia was known for its cheap vodka?

I don't drink because of peer pressure, I certainly don't drink for the good of my health and I don't drink to get off my head. I drink because I like the taste of several alcoholic beveridges (a decent Cabernet Sauvignion in particular, although I'm also partial to a good Czech lager) and I also like a feeling of mild intoxication.
In the same way that eating a decent meal is both an enjoyable experience and produces a sense of satisfaction, so does drinking. I find fat people obscene and I find drunk people boring. Moderation in everything does you no harm.
i havent drink before.. i dun tink it tastes nice though.. why risk getting your liver into trouble like liver failure, etc etc?
I celebrated my 21st birthday in September (legal drinking age in PA) and I was so excited. But honestly, it wasn't that great. I mean.. yea, I got drunk and all that.. but it's really not any different. You can go to a bar and drink as opposed to going to a bonfire or a party and drink. Personally, I'd rather go to a bonfire.. bars are over rated.. and pretty much, everyone in there is drinking to get drunk. I like to drink to be social and have a little fun.
Well, I can see no reason in drinking more than about 3 alcoholic drinks at a party (Strong ones). Having seen the states some people can get in after only a few, it is enough to put you off for life! I feel that people drink to enhance their mood. The problems come when alcohol is used to rectify bad moods, or to make yourself feel normal. Or when you get totally ****** and can't control yourself.
Well, my father is an alcoholic. Him going on benches has led me to learn from him, and to know what to do and how to help people. I have drunken alot, even at my age. I otherwise wouldn't have been exposed to alcohol, if it werent for my father. I live alone wit him, so alot of respnsibility has to have been made, quickly. My mother lives a good 700 or so miles form where i do, so i had to kinda become the man of the house. If i had to make a decisoun, i would make it to whre certain tests have to be made, and a license has to be issued to a person in order for them to purchase alcohol. I think that would make my situation more scarce. Possibly eliminating it in some cases or areas. I think that the situation i was put in, was both wrong and uneccisary. I know that the government will problably will not let such an action as screening for licenses. As it is the main source of tax money for them. Possible raising the cost as they are doing with fags would help a bit. Who knows, it might make it to where people will try harder to quit.
My opinion or your situation is that you just stay away from it, but if you can handle yourself and know how to stop. Have a good feel of how much your body can handle, then go ahead.

I just dont thnk its really needed).

if you don't whant to drink i will be the last person to say that you must drink.
Also the main reason for drinking alcohol is not getting totally pissed so you forget the hole evening.
you drink it because you like it. Maybe to losen up a bit.
i'm sixteen i can drink legally in the Netherlands and the best thing is not to drink when you pusht by other people.
Something about things that change a person's behaviour even slightly freak me out. I've never wanted to taste beer or anything, the interest just isn't there. I also don't believe in going to parties that need alcohol to get going - how fun could it be if you have to get drunk to enjoy it?
Usually people start-up with one thing
and end up with every thing
.
When i say one thing, it may be starting on with Smoking or Drinking Alcohol. When i say everything, it will be Smoking, Drinking Alcohol, Doping, etc...
It is always better that you stop the basic things, so that u don't end up with all the things....
When i ask people " Why r u drinking?", I find many people quoting "I enjoy life and this Life is to enjoy".
But the fact always remains the same that it is just an illusion and an temporary enjoyment. Moreover there are a lot of ways through which people can relax and enjoy the life. But definitely, not this way.
Even History shows the slow and steady fall of people because of this temporary illusion.
Infact - Alcohol can be recommended as a Medicine sometimes but not all the times.
In my personal opinion - Don't take any alcoholic drinks.
Bye for now...

yeah you are rigth on the point dude. many people see drinking as a negative act. well its their opinio, we just need to respect it.
When I was 21, i didn't know my limit, and i was scared to push it. I hate people who just try to get drunk. I enjoy alcohol myself, after a couple drinks i sometimes feel more relaxed...but that's it. My rule is no more than 2 drink in a day, which is usually once every week or so...i still don't drink very often, it's not a big deal. After 2 drinks i stop - even if i don't feel anything...i would hate to be responsible for something happening if i'm driving or doing anything else.
I just realized something. You know the avatar I have up right now? That's the head portion of the picture, taken while I was passed out drunk on the couch, and one of my friends thought it would be funny to take a picture of me in all of my piss drunk "glory". The rest of the picture isn't my most pleasing of moments.
I know it's fairly stereotypical of my culture, but being Irish, I have a sort of spiritual affinity with my culture while I'm drinking.
I think too many people confuse fun -- with alcohol. There are many other ways to have a goodtime. Aslong as your are a confident happy person, you can do anything
Yes, of course your parents and peers have a large impact on their children's decisions to drink. However, research clearly indicates that alcohol advertising and marketing also have a significant impact by influencing the attitudes of parents and peers and helping to create an environment that promotes underage drinking.
I was reading this statistics poll in a magazine at the hair dressers, the other day and it was say how a study of eighth-graders showed that those with greater exposure to alcohol advertisements in magazines, on television, and at sporting and music events were more aware of the advertising and more likely to remember the advertisements they had seen!![/b]

The same could be said of any type of advertising, be it fast food, alcohol or whatever other subversive product is on offer. Exposure to anything will lead to increased awareness.
im only 13 so i cant drink but ive had a few beers now and then tastes like crap i dont no if i ever want to get drunk or smashed wen i grow up
I'm 27 and I've never drank before. I'm sure I'm missing out on anything wither. And with all the money I'm saving by not drinking, I can buy other essential stuff. Like twinkies.
I only have one major opinion when it comes to alcohol. The first drink I'm gonna have is rum. 'Cause I'm a pirate.
Oh, and I figure you should never drink alone. If you're drinking alone, I figure that's a sign of alcoholism. If you're drinking with friends, I figure that's a sign of hanging out with friends.
I've never been into the drink for the sake of drinking thing, but I do enjoy a nice glass of wine with some meals. I cook with alcohol far more than I drink it, as it can be quite versatile in its flavorings depending on what you use and how you use it.
I drink. And recently now that i am not with my folks anymore i drink as and when i want. But i have always been someone who would drink with company and not just because i want to get drunk..Its nice to get drunk with friends.
By drinking alchohol, you destroy yourself. Alchohol is a poison for the body. And, did you know what? Alchohol releases more femenine hormones. Your hips get wider, your breasts get bigger. Alchohol drinking is way bad for your health.
Drinking is no problem as long as you drink it with your brains
(if you undestand me
)
I say, DRINK UP!
I'm Irish, so I like to get drunk and get into fights. I drank and did drugs very heavily from age 15-27. I had some of the best times of my life, no regrets. I did manage to lose my driver's license and get into other legal troubles. I was never addicted to anything, it's just something all of my friends and I did for fun. I haven't drank or done drugs in two years. I feel a heck of alot better. Alcohol isn't evil, it's just not for everybody. It is legal. My family has a history of heart problems, so quite a few (American) doctors have said that drinking 1-2 glasses of red wne a day is good for your heart. I don't agree that this is untrue. There are studies showing many different opinions on this.
I bartended at a couple of big clubs in Detroit for a few years. Sleeping all day, working at night, and partying with coworkers and people from the clubs until the next morning was very common. Alot of fun, but it got old. Most of the responses on this thread is "I've never been drunk" or "I only have 1 or 2". If you were from where I grew up, I would bet some of you were lying or in denial. I hope not. It sounds like most of you are under 20 years old. Your life is going to change drastically from high school to college to starting your career. You are going to make completely new groups of friends and change your attitudes about alot of things.
The moral of this story is - have fun, be careful, don't make the same mistakes I did. I learned the hard way. Life is good today. Thanks for reading this.
To put my view in context, I am an eighteen year old freshman in college in the U.S. So I am around teenage drinking a lot, but it is not legal. I personally don't drink. I don't see a point because I can relax and have fun in much cheaper and safer ways. It is pretty hard to avoid the drinking/party scene but there are some people that don't drink. I don't really have a problem with people drinking in moderation, but I hate how people think that they need to drink to have fun. I have some friends that drink 3-4 nights a week and it's a shock when a Thursday or weekend night goes by that they don't drink. Alcoholism scares me, so anyone even remotely dependant on the idea that they need to drink is scary.
Drinking occassionally (Moderate drinking) is very much ok...But it hurt me to the core when I see some of my friends who drink just for the sake of it..or when they get bored.
I only drink when I meet some of my ol frnds or celebrate something.
Being another Irish over 20 who's experienced the alco madness over here.
A typical night out is 4-5 units of alcohol, and for 18-25 yr olds nightclub as well. Nightclubbin involves shots of alcohol or really strong spirits (normally vodka or whiskey), and when you're feeling very merry you start having the craic. The more mature you are, the more you tend for a quiet night out, with less alcohol and more conversation.
Just don't let yourself be put under pressure for sticking on coke for the night. I tried just water for the night, to see how people would react and pressure me, and water all night is quite fun without anyone knowing it if they're on alcohol.
I really like Bacardi Breezers but they're expensive, and I also love Bulmers apple cider.
Alcohol is not bad until you maintain your limits. Limit is what counts. Even medicinal studies claims alcohol to some extent is good for health.
Drink alcohol, save water.... LOL
people drink ususally before the age...my cousin drank since his sophomore year or something (he was in korea, but he still wasn't old enough), and now he's senior- still drinking. he's not mad for it, though.
drinking is a lot better than smoking, which what a lot of men do in korea.
You have to be 21 in U.S. to drink, I think drinking is stupid. Whoever drinks....gosh, just relax another way, find another gosh, like sleeping, or hot spa, bath, or something, drinking is never the answer.
[quote="Vrythramax"]It's an individuals right to drink if he or she wants to. It's funny how something as dangerous as alcohol is legal and "socially acceptable", but smoking a joint will get you arrested and give you a criminal record that will hound you all your life.
I could'nt agree with you more.
I personally like drinking, about once a month I like to go out with some of my friends, and just get wrecked. However, we do it responsibly (no driving). Also, we make an effort to avoid drinking with people who have negative reactions to excessive amounts of alchohol. We don't drink with people who get aggressive angry or obnoxious when drunk. My friends and I truly have a good time when we are drunk.
A wise man or woman once said "Say it LOUD, say it plowed"!
I completely agree with "Slammer" [the thread starter] view point.
There is no point and you risk your life when you drive back home. It tastes bad and it's a waste of money and time. You could use the time for self development.
my opinion on alcohol is really messed up. you'd think growing up with alcoholic parents would make someone have a strong negative view of it. i did for a while, and i took a straight-edge oath (straight-edge is a lifestyle, i guess you could call it, of no drinking, drugs, etc). but then last year i sort of grew out of it, and since then, picked up the tendencies to smoke out of my bedroom window and drink all my parents' champagne at family parties. i guess it's pretty hypocritical of me. i guess i think it's okay to drink, when it's NOT every night, and when it's for fun, not shelter.
Eh, I'm 19 (Ca, USA.) And for myself, social drinking is perfectly fine. I've only been really drunk less thena handful of time, and only passed out once: my first time trying alcohol. Since then I've known my limit and just used it to make the night a bit more fun. I like the taste of vodka, and some mixed drinks can make the game jenga a full night of entertainment. And beer pong is just fun for bragging rights against your friends.
I feel it's rediculous how restricted it is in the US vs other countries. like someone at the beginning said: the novelty of it is that it's illegal. If it were legal at a younger age and kids were taught to respect alcohol, everybody would be more responsible in general. The problem with doing that in the US now is that all the 16 years old would abuse it if the limit were lower, because in thier mind it would still be a sneaky thing to do because that's how they were raised.
Just don't be a drunk jerk and never drive while under the influence and everybody can live in peace with each other.
If you are just starting to drink, the biggest challenge you'd face is to manage the addiction.
People start with alcohol by choice, but soon it doesn't remain a choice. That's the thin line.
To be honest im not bothered about Alcohol, I can drink it if I want as the legal age to drink alcohol in the UK is 5 (Suprising isn't it)
I always drink n drive
But i have been arrested many times, luckily i know many cops here in my town so i got nothing to worry
Alcohol is a very tricky bastard, it sneaks up from behind... I've been drinking with my buddy's from the age of 16 regularly. It really became a habit after a while to drink while we gone out... I stopped the madness some time ago but several friends of mine became alcoholics. I say smoke more grass then you drink... That is if you don't smoke every day
You may consider drinking as a supplement when you're not having fun for example in a club where you are listening some music that you don't like so much or you're with people that are not your party, then you drink some alcohol and then you feel happy.
Remember that alcohol will damage you if you don't stop before the limits and that if you feel happy without alcohol then you DO NOT NEED to drink at all.
When I was a teenager i used to drink a good bit. especially when I moved in with my dad for a year when I was 16 (my dads an alchoholic) I think that in america its used inapropriatly for the most part. Alot of Kids develop the wrong idea about it and use it to get drizzy. I felt like a rebel when I had to snick around to do it behind my moms back, but when I saw what it did to my dad I felt like an idiot. I never got as bad as my father about my drinking thank God.
I was always pretty good about not drinking so much that it made me missarable. I rarely got sick or got a hang over. I did go through a spell after i broke up with my last long term girlfreind were I was drinking to much. I think after the night I supposidly felt up my best freinds ankles and almost slept with a teenage girl and didnt remember any of it the next day I was inclined to stop. Im not sure exactly what it was I was drinking that night but I remember it tasting like gasoline smells : p
I can see drinking being productive for your health if you have like one glass of wine a day. Although like most things of that nature that are good for you its easier to use modern alternative methods. I dont drink anymore and hopefully I will keep it that way. I do however think that I was a fairly responsible drinker when I was a drinker. like anything in life moderation is key. For some reason though moderation is not the attitude taken towards alchohol in my culture.

Fried food does not slow reaction times and endanger the lives of others like alcohol can when a drunk gets behind the wheel of a car. I had an uncle who was an alcoholoic and I have several relatives who were badly injured after a head-on collision from a drunk driver. Two of these relatives still live with the after affects from the wreck even though it was 20 years ago.
I agree that drinking is moderation is fine but getting drunk is pretty stupid. And, those you get drunk and then drive should be put away.
I also agree that beer does not taste good. I have a glass of wine occassionally though.
Drinking will cost you so much $cash$. I really don't understand why people do it. I've been real drunk a few times, kind of drunk a few more, and sober for about 99.9% of my life.
Why waste your money on things like that? Particularly since so you just rent the stuff? One way or another its coming out and going to damage during the process.
People who use alcohol are also more likely to get cancer (all types) than those who don't. And lets not forget about liver damage.

nonsense, all the best brains love a scotch.
To be blunt, my views on drinking are thus:
1. There isn't one good reason to drink, and there are countless reasons not too.
2. It's very bad for you. You might as well drink nitroglycerin and stand up and do jumping jacks.....
3. It's both legally and morally wrong, according to my worldview.

Legal has to do with the government of the land, not anybody's worldview. Regardless of what you think, if you're over 21 in the U.S. it is legal, period.
First, sorry for my english...i'm french!!
I'm 20 years old and i live in Maine et loire, which is the region that drinks most alcohol! I think that i shouldn't be proud of it but i am...
I drink alcohol only for about 2 years, and i know most of my friend and people i know drink regullary since they are about 15,16...
I now that we can have some good times whithout alcohol, but with the time, it's like it is so natural to drink...but it's not.
Think about it before starting drinking...
PS : I'm not an alcoholic...
Two glasses of wine a day keeps the doctor away!
And its better to drink one or two glasses of alcohol a day than 30 glasses on a fridaynight
In my opinion, you sometimes need a little alcohol to relax and have a good time. I know some persons who never drink and one that hasn't ever tried alcohol in his life, and those persons still have a good time when we go out. I admire and respect that.
As far as I'm concerned, however, I like to have a beer, a drink or a glass of wine now and then, and that is, as far as I see it, perfectly harmless. Like everything else, alcohol should be consumed with moderation.

I'd rather drink than smoke.
At least that way i have an element of control over who i'm killing.
Though i'd like to know what on earth a lot of you on this thread think drink does to you - as most of you sem to think that one whiff of the stuff and you immediately forget the next 8 hours.
Drinking is ok, the problem is the age at which we are allowed to drink and when we are allowed to drive is messed up.
The 21 limit is stupid, they don't know their limit so they're more likely to drive drunk when they don't know better to know they've had enough.
Teen have a high fatality rate in car crashes, and alot of that time they're drunk or under the influence of some kind.
What the Drinking age MAX should be: 16 <- you can drop out of school and get a job and drive, but you can't drink...legally. Doesn't mean alot DON'T.
REMEMBER: This is just legally buying. You don't have to if you don't want to.
What the Driving age should be: 18 <- you can die for your country and smoke but you can't drink...legally. Doesn't make alot of sense.
I think if people are aloud to get drunk, pot should be legal. It is less harmful.
Just check out:
Weed Effects:

Alcohol:

-Mike
That is true, but then if pot is legal, why aren't truly bad drugs legal, such as meth? I'm not saying I like meth. Far from it. Meth is a vile, evil drug and those that use it become slaves to it physically and mentally as their bodies crumble around them.
But I like booze every now and then
I suppose I could see it go both ways.
I mean, it really does seem stupid to spend so much money on alcohol when you could be spending it on something that might be useful.
For example,
Let's say "Joe" spends about 20 dollars a week on alcohol.
Now, lets multiply that by 52 (which is the number of weeks in a year.)
$20 x 52 = $1040 a year.
Now, Sarah has a weekly party at her house and spends approx. 150 on booze, wine coolers, wine ect...
150 x 52 = 7800
Holy ****, you could be spending that money on other things. You're basically paying for a one time thing that has painful consequences such as memory loss, hangovers, potential car accidents, having sex/being raped by a complete stranger, and other terrible incidents.
On the other hand, there is that element of curiosity that makes you wonder...
People may say that alcohol relaxes them, but there is also a chemical in the alcohol that is a depressant. So, what people believe are making them feel better, are actually the opposite.
But whatever, I don't like alcohol. It's horrible and bitter.
If anything, SMIRNOFF for me!
greetings to all of you...first i want to say sorry to offend some of you that loves to drink liquors, i didn't mean it, i don't want to offend you, and hurt your feelings, i know you will just ignore this, but lets be truthful to ourselves,
we know that there is no good thing that we can get in drinking liquors, the only thing we can get is quarrel and fight with our fellow drunkards, and we result to going to take a visit to our nearest police station...
Let us face it, that is the truth, all lot of people die everyday, because of liquors, my grandfather died because of drinking liquor also...liquors makes our lives on earth short. if you want to enjoy your life...STOP drinking liquors and see the change....
The bible also tells that there is no drunkard that will go to heaven....If you don't believe it, it's up to you. It is GOD you wrote the BIBLE.... It is our guide to live a better and happier life..GOD doesn't want us to suffer, he wants us to be happy, and live the life that he gave to the fullest of it...Don't lie to yourselves, accept and be truthful to it, it is for your own GOOD, i'm just concerned of your lives...you can do it...
YOU MUST CHANGE YOUR ATTITUDES...
IT IS NOT YET TO LATE TO CHANGE....
GOD bless and takecare... I hope i could inspire and help you through this message....
i'm 19 now but here you can drink from age 16, when i was 15-16 i used to drink a lot of alcohol when i was going out and i was drunk almost every weekend but now i have a driving license and i'm always driving so i don't drink anymore sometimes i do drink but only 1 thing
It may seem that alcohol is just simply a waste of money, but it actually helps many people relax and have a fun time. There is little risks if you follow the laws, and to many people, that relaxation only comes from alcohol, so it's not too much of a waste if you have self control. Many people these days can't live without a can of beer after work, etc. but it is accepted by most of the people.

Please, just stop. all this GOD BIBLE GOD GOOD is complete crap and a useless argument. I'd hate to break it to you, but if you ever actually had read the gospels, you would know that JESUS knows that there's a difference between social drinking and alcoholism. Jesus drank alcohol. Every single one of his diciples drank alcohol. Are you going to tell me that they're all going to hell?
I'm so sick of ignorant 'christians' (which you are being a good representative of) trying to tell people what they can or cannot do in thier life. Ever hear of having a 'personal' relationship with god or are you all about how stuff looks on the outside? You need to look up the social context and meaning of the word drunkard and then maybe you'll understand the purpose of that passage.
Im 13 and i think that drinking aint bad. i think that if u want to drink u should be allowed. I have some good friends who drink 2, so i think theres nutin wrong with it. aint saying that im going to be a drinkin guy in the future
wtf since where when there other scottish people here?
@@
I feel that this is a choice. But at the same time one should be responsible. Drinking and Driving DO NOT MIX. One that drinks to get drunk are only hurting themselves and it's just not cool.
I guess in moderation it's ok. But I would never touch the stuff myself. I've heard it tastes gross. (I'm only 14)
I wouldn't if I was you, but It's your life and your decision.
I drink alcohol occasionally - at home I'll consume the odd alcoholic drink on a night (usually a glass of wine or beer, or a spirit mixed with a soft drink e.g. vodka and coke), but tend to drink more if I'm at a family or social gathering such as a party. Occasionally I've got drunk and regretted it afterwards, but that's never happened that often. I did go through a phase a few years ago of drinking to the point where I would get drunk and end up either making a fool of myself or being ill, but I put that down to being young and inexperienced (I was 18 at the time) and now feel I'm old enough to pace myself.
As for 13 and 14-year-olds drinking, I was never in that position as I started drinking socially at around 17, when being underage wasn't so much of a problem as I knew it wouldn't be long before it was legal.
That's my situation:
I'm 17, and exchange student from Germany. Now I'm in the US for a year. In Germany the drinking age for beer and wine is 16, although you drink everything when you turn 16 or even earlier. Now that I'm here, I have been sober for almost 7 months.
It's not just the alcohol I miss. It's the parties. under 18 you can't go to bars or to clubs, nowhere. This stinks.
I think alcohol is good as long as you don't exagurate. Some beer and a couple of shots, and youre fine.
I don't understand while the government is being so stubborn^^

People are not born thinking, "Oh, I think I need to drink today."
You are trained to think you "need" things like, "a smoke" or "a glass of whiskey."
And you see it everyday.
Most overweight men and women feel that they need just one more french fry.
Or anorexic men and women who feel that they need to lose just one more pound to be perfect.
We basically become programmed.
Well, **** that.
My view is that if your going to drink until you throw-up, be my guest, as long you don't throw-up on my carpet.
People you drink to get drunk are sad people, hardly living life, waking up with a hangover everyday, and generaly wasting away, because they belive that they need to drink.
The occasional wine, beer, ect. at a party is good and all, as long as you don't overdo it.
I don't like drinking at all, its disgusting, waste of time and money. I have a friend who drinks abit at parties though, but he doesn't drink outside that.
It is surprising that so many people in the world don't give up their drinking habits even when it is scientifically proven to be harmful for one's health. Not only that a person addicted to drinking brings about a disgrace on his family and friends and at times ruins both. Those who are given to drinking cause their intelligence to pass away, their human nature to be perverted, their light to be changed, and their purity to be soiled. Alcohol, truly, leads the mind astray and causes the weakening of the body. Every intelligent person would definitely shun it.
"Pour me another drink!"
What do you think I think about booze?
I can drink when i am 18 i live int he Uk, getting drunk is there choice, leave them to it as long as they dont turn violent and turn on the crying its ok, but only very unoften, its worse to go out Bindge drinking every weekend than it is to be an alcoholic, in a way, you have more chance of quick death!
Hello,
Iv'e read almost all the opinion in here, thats an interesting subject because I have a friend (girl) that dont like drinkin.
That kinda anoying sometime because when we go out, (clubin', partys restorant...) we alway drink together and having fun (we are "NEVER" drunk) but drinking make you feel like... kinda less shy, or boosting your fun a little. so sometime we feel bad about her, because shes with us and looking having lesss fun... sometime (in bar/restorant particulary)
However, Personaly I like the taste of beer, even at home once or twice a week, i like to drink 1 beer on the evening, will watching TV or other hobby. btw.. its not every weeks but almost.
anyway, that was my little story
i'm too young, but anyway i think that drinking is good only if you know to stop after a little bit, not that i'm going to drink, but if someone wants to drink i think he may do it, but he should know when to stop/ but apperently not everyone know when to stop
Most people feel relaxed when they are drinking. I think it is more of conditioning by advertisements and to some extent the values of our modern world.
Can we not enjoy ourselves as much as if not when in meditation or state of prayer.
It is interesting that most people feel guilty about drinking and yet they continue to drink. Drinking can lead to bad health but not meditation or prayers. But we don't see the obvisious. Or perhaps we don't want to.
In this age of science when we prefer to have a scientific attitude in everything, one fails to understand, why medical discoveries don't stop us from the dangers of drinking.
However, it's good to note that governments are increasingly imposing new prohibitions on smoking and drinking at least in public.
One hopes good sense will prevail in the end.

Guys, let's think this over for a bit...
For some (most) of you guys, alcohol MAY have some damaging properties, as you are still groing up. This does not mean that you can't have one drink, as long as you know what you are doing.
When you are fully grown, alcohol has little or no effect when consumed with moderation. But this is exactly the same with everything else (ex: milk...).
In my country alcohol is a social habit and most ppl abuse it's use (btw, my nick comes from a beer). This does not mean that everyone here is a drunk or that we are drinking 24/7, but most ppl go out at night occasionally/regularly and have a drink (some have more than one).
I have regularly gone out at night on weekends/hollidays and i always drinked. I used to drink A LOT (something like 20+ vodkas per night) without getting drunk... and i thought, ok.. i'm not drunk, so it's OK.. OFC IT'S NOT!!!!!! i was starting (?) to have an addiction and ruining my health.
Fortunately i came to my senses in time to stop it and nowadays i drink moderately (wich is one or 2 drinks per night when i go out, and i don't go out so often). I like to have a drink with my friends and it feels great. Why should i be deprived of something that i like and that isn't harmfull for me or others?
So, to reach a conclusion.. let's not be hactic or fiercely against this kind of things.. As long as you know what you are doing and you do it with control, it's OK.
I know there are severall of you under the age of 18/21 (whatever minimum drinking age is set by your country) and i strongly recomend you guys NOT to break the law. if there is no minimum age set on your country, don't think you're any different from other youngsters around the world.. you are NOT fully grown b4 your 18 years of age and drinking may be harmfull, specially to your liver, brain and kidneys. The minimum age is there for a reason and it's meant to keep you from screwing up.
Be Well
P.S. - This topic is about alcohol and not about cannabis. keep it on-topic. I also have my oppinion about that, but it has no place on this discussion.
I'm still underaged, but that'll change in June.
I really have to say that I respect the fact that everyone has their own opinions.
I have always enjoyed drinking. Now I'm not a 'drunk' or an alcoholic mind you, I just simply enjoy drinking and always have.
Beer, for example ..... I don't really stick with one type, and I don't drink it just to get drunk (although sometimes it can be a nice little extra
), I simply enjoy the tast of it.
As far as liquor is concerned, well, I dont hit the hard stuff often. At parties or when I go out to a bar.
For some people it's just a way of life ... not because they're an alchoholic, but because they enjoy it. Personally, I would rather have a Newcastle over a soft drink at any given time.
Um... Achohol and Weed are far less dangeress then Meth.
Ok another speech for the drinking people. If you think drinking is good then you must be very dumb.....drinking is the number 1 cause of death in Canada and the USA (drinking and driving or not), the point im sayin is that drinking is not good it will make you hallucinate and hurt the people you love. Drinking is like a part from the Harry Potter 3 book, like when Lupin turns into a Werewolf he remembers nothing and would kill everyone in front of him (Sirius, Harry), drinking has the same effect you drink too much then you will start forgetting and then you will eventually start hurting someone that you love.[/b]
i honestly like drinking with my friends. i think its kinda fun to get drunk but it is also a waste of money. i am keeping my age anonymous
just a comment for all these people with horror stories and warnings about life: you gotta realize that most of what you hear is only extreme examples and the majority of times people drink and have fun you never hear about it, cause nobody cares when stuff goes fine.
