How do the "Fake News" programs like "The Daily Show" and "Countdown with Keith Olberman" compare to regular 24-hour cable news programs?

Is the media primarily concerned with ratings? Do they value their ratings over the value of their content?

The outlook that programs like "The Daily Show" is completely different. At least they scrutinize the political stories - biased or not. I suppose that the amount of time spent on toilet humor is what gets them their ratings.

What is more important for every American to know? Is it the latest details of a single deranged murder?
