UK Government Confiscates Firefox CDs

broken2144
Why does nobody ever read license agreements?

Quote:
The idea that Free Software can be sold has some government officials perplexed. Times Online has the story. A UK Trading Standards officer contacted the Mozilla Foundation to report catching a business selling copies of Firefox. The organization confiscated the CDs with the intent to prosecute said business. When informed that such distribution was authorized, the officer first expressed disbelief that Free Software could be sold then said 'If Mozilla permit the sale of copied versions of its software, it makes it virtually impossible for us, from a practical point of view, to enforce UK anti-piracy legislation'.

who would pay for firefox? LOL

i mean, it's great, but i would hope that the fact that it's free would be common knowledge...

These are the stories I only seem to find on frihost.

LOL LOL LOL

And by the way, I am sure you too would BUY FireFox if you had no other browser, wanted someone elses fancy setup or where a really-newbe.

Some people will try anything to make a buck....and I'm sure there are some newbies out there that would pay for a free browser.

if your language wasnt supported by mozilla, would you all pay for it to be written in?

It's a beginning.
Open-source software causing law enforcement to be confused about enforcing copyright laws...
Soon, copyright laws cease to exist.

Well you never know about the audacity of people these days. Look on eBay and can you find people selling Windows XP SP2 CDs and people actually buying them. Ahh how I pity the computer illiterate.
raman
Good find, can't actually believe that people would pay for firefox considering you can download it on the internet for free. I guess some people don't know this.
nopaniers
I'm amazed they didn't know... after all it's their job. Open source seems to be coming of age for the desktop, with IMHO Firefox being the best browser out there, and Eclipse being the best development environment.

No, They are not selling it to make money I don't think just to cover the costs of making the CD's.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Why does nobody understand this?
Cause:
The majority of comuter users are still on dial-up internet, so it would be very convienient for them to have it on disk, and not wait for several hours for it to finish downloading. The people selling the disks realize this, and they capitalize on it by selling disks to these users. They charge to cover shipping, handling, material costs, and a little just for profit. This is entirely legal under open-source liscencing, but the police don't realize that.
Effect:
The subject of this thread.

Causality.

Linux is at its heart open source software. No agency has rounded up the company that makes RedHat yet, so at least national agencies have some *small* degree of sense. Razz

Interestingly, note the fact that somebody from 'trading standards', whatever that is (I'm from the USA, no clue what the equivilant is here), was the one investigating. That's not the police, this wasnt a criminal inquiry.

And yes, I'd buy a free browser on disk if I had no other browser to download it with. It's simple logic. Wouldn't buy firefox though Smile
bigdan
If they wanted Firefox on a CD, why don't they just buy a computer magazine with a cover CD attached to it? Most PC mags now carry Firefox on their CDs...

i didn't know people so little common sense. i think all tht pornography is making their heads all messed up. bit silly to sell a freeware. Very Happy

I just think its so sad that governments don't understand that some people don't always do things for money. Crying or Very sad

Why can't they understand that sometimes people just want to do things for the good of humanity and the community, and not for the good of the upper-class. Wink

The the funny thing is that Firefox and Google, when they started up, were so great, yet they had hardly any funding. However other organisations, like Microsoft, spat out garbage like Internet Explorer and MSN Search. Surprised

God save the world! Confused

Trading Standards have the power of criminal prosecution the same as the Inland Revenue and Cutoms & Excise. They investigate cases of illegal merchandise (like bogus designer clothes, jewellery, etc being passed off as genuine), and they also ensure that advertising is accurate.
