I recommend this band: ABIGOR

Abigor was one of the most successful non-Scandinavian black metal bands, with a career that spanned almost precisely one decade and a multitude of well-received albums. Their last album, 2001's Satanized, sums up the band's outlook well, in that they were clearly in the old-school black metal camp but yet also threw in several twists and turns and a good degree of songwriting depth that allowed the band to rise above simply being another faceless black metal band.

Founder Peter Kubik disbanded the group in June of 2003, feeling that his new material would not be accepted by what he felt was a confining black metal community. He has since founded a new band, St. Lucifer, featuring a couple of other former Abigor members in its ranks.

Named for the year that a plague hit Norway, 1349 represents one of the rising stars in preserving old-school black metal. The band formed in 1997, with an early lineup featuring guitarist Balfori, who left and is now fronts Lunaris. Eventually they attracted the interest of noted drummer Frost of Satyricon, who eventually signed on as a full-time member. After a debut EP came their first full-length album Liberation, an exhausting, hyperspeed blast of old-school black mayhem (no pun intended), featuring an inhuman drumming performance from Frost and some of the meanest riffs heard in some time. In keeping with old values, the production is very thin, with the drums rather oddly mixed and the guitars sounding heavily distorted and buzzy. These guys aren't reinventing black metal, but they are as good if not better than the bands that obviously influenced them (think bands like Marduk, Darkthrone, or old Mayhem). Liberation is among the finest raw black metal albums to emerge in several years.

The self-proclaimed "mystical occult metal" band Absu hailed from Texas and maintained a steady following in the extreme metal underground for a number of years. They are usually labelled a black metal band, and often referred to as one of the best American black metal bands, but though black metal tendencies are quite evident (vocals in particular), their style encompasses much more. There are several places in their lastest album Tara where "Reign In Blood" era Slayer styled riffs can be heard, played at hyperspeed. Frequently the speed is exhausting, earning special marks for drummer Proscriptor, clearly one of the fastest and most talented drummers playing today. Lyrically, Absu was clearly on another plane, as a quick glance of their song titles can attest -- this is a band who puts great time and care into their lyrics. Tara has received several glowing reviews, and they are quite justified -- this was one of the best extreme metal bands of their day.

The venerable black metal band Ancient originated in 1992 as a solo project for Aphazel, who has remained the one constant amidst numerous changes over the years both in lineups and in home countries (originating in Norway, the band spent some time in the US and now calls Italy home). Stylistically, Ancient is first and foremost a black metal band, enough so that they have been described in the past as either generic or copyists. While it is true that much of their work does come across as traditional, basic black metal, labelling them copycats is a bit strong. Moreover, the band has grown immeasurably over the years, especially when placing their debut Svartalheim, with its minimalist old-school values, next to their recent Promixa Centauri, clearly their most adventurous and least generic effort yet. Yes, most of their albums do little to expand the genre, but Ancient is still an accomplished band worthy of attention, and if nothing else serve as fine representatives of black metal.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Barathrum is one of the older Finnish black metal bands, with a rich history featuring several members who went on to success with other bands. Formed in 1990 as Darkfeast by vocalist Demonos Sova, they debuted in 1994 with Hellstorm and have recorded relatively steadily since then, with eight albums released. The two albums reviewed here are quite different. 1996's Eerie, their second album, is a simplistic, raw, bass-heavy black metal album, somewhat in the same league as fellow Finns Beherit, quite effective for its primal groove and, unbelievably, catchy (yet undeniably evil) rhythms. By contrast, 2002's Venomous is far more uptempo in keeping with modern black metal bands, arguably less distinctive than their early work but certainly more polished and mature. With the release of 2005's Anno Aspera came word that the band was done, or at least on indefinite hold. A trivial note that is often mentioned is that the first letters of the band's eight albums spell out "Heil Sova".

Bathory

Last Update: June 8, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bathory must be considered a major influence, either directly or indirectly, on virtually every black metal band in the last decade. It was Bathory, along with Venom, who helped pioneered the raw death/black style and gutteral vocals that are now standard in the genres. Basically a one-man band (with a scattered few early-career exceptions), Bathory's work have run the gamut from more simplistic Venom-ish fare (first two albums, the debut in particular) to a more epic, Manowar-ish style, steeped in Norse mythology, on much of the middle and later albums, to a more thrash-based style on releases such as Octagon. Quorthon (the man himself) has also recorded apart from the Bathory name, releasing two albums under the name Quorthon, said to be very un-Bathory-like. The latest releases is the two part Nordland effort, with part one released in 2002 and its followup released earlier in 2003. A new album was expected to be recorded in 2004, but with Quorthon's unfortunate and unexpected passing, this would appear not to happen.

RIP: Quorthon, June 7, 2004, of an apparent heart failure.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arguably one of the best bands to originate from Poland, Behemoth was formed in 1991 by Nergal, who through many lineup changes is the one constant in the band. Their early work was squarely in the black metal camp, forging a style that really wasn't radically different from others in the genre. By the time of Satanica, however, Behemoth started incorporating death metal influences and matured into an extreme metal force. Since the release of Thelema.6 they have consistently released quality albums, blending the best of black and death metal, creating a vicious and original style, bolstered by a flawless production that brings out the best in the songs. A very recommended band for extreme metal fans.

Evil or Very Mad Beherit
Origin: Finland

Status: Disbanded

Last Update: March 29, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Beherit was not only one of Finland's oldest black metal bands, but a true pioneer and innovator in the world of grim, cult black metal. Taking their cue from bands such as Venom and Hellhammer and then going one step farther, their strength was their minimalist approach -- their songs are among the most simplistic ever recorded by any band, but rather than sounding amateurish, the songs embody evil in its most raw, primitive form. The guitars drone, the drums plod, but the vocals differentiate the band from their fellow black metallists, often processed with various effects that only make the band sound that much more evil.

Befitting a true underground band, Beherit's discography is a bit disjointed. In actuality the band only recorded one true full-length album, Drawing Down The Moon, preceded by assorted demos, singles, and EPs (the debut album The Oath Of Black Blood is actually nothing more than a re-release of a prior demo and EP). By 1993 the band had flamed out, but leader Holocausto continued to record music as Beherit, resulting in the two albums H418ov21.C and Electric Doom Synthesis. These are not metal albums at all, but instead are extremely dark, minimalist ambient albums, though in retrospect they do represent a logical progression from their classic works.

The Black is more of a historical footnote, this being one band featuring Dissection's Jon Nödtveidt. The only album recorded was The Priest Of Satan in 1994 (Dissection was active and had recorded by then, so either the two bands were alive simultaneously, or this band existed before Dissection and the album was released posthumously). The style was a simplistic death/black mixture, with scant keyboard touches and not a lot of variation in the songs.

Borknagar was founded in 1995 by guitarist Oystein Brun, who, fresh from his stint in a previous band called Molested, decided to form a new black metal project, enlisting several major players in the scene. The band forgoes the simplistic blastbeats and shrieking typical of the early black metal bands, instead opting for a more majestic black metal sound ("epic metal" as Brun himself has described the style). Despite frequent lineup changes, Borknagar's music remains of high quality -- this is one of the better modern post-black metal bands in the scene today. The arrival of new vocalist Vintersorg has added a new dimension to their sound, and their recent Empiricism release may well be their best yet.

The new album, Epic, was released in June 2004.

Last Update: May 11, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Burzum features arguably the most infamous figure in Norwegian black metal, that being one Count Grishnach (real name Varg Vikernes). The band evolved from an early band called Uruk-Hai, a band that broke up in 1990. After playing in some short-lived projects (one of which featured future members of Immortal), Vikernes resurrected Uruk-Hai, renamed it Burzum, and continued as a one-man project. Along the way he became one of the leaders of the Inner Circle of black metal musicians and friends, who were responsible for various church burnings and the like in the early nineties. Then came the famous murder of then-bandmate Euronymous of Mayhem (whom Vikernes had recently joined) in 1993, and Vikernes was convicted for the crime and sent to prison, where he remains to this day (a famously spectacular prison breakout attempt notwithstanding).

From a musical standpoint, the opinion here is that the legacy of Varg the person will always be more lasting and noteworthy than that of Burzum the band. This is not to say that the music is inconsequential, as it is clear that much of the early work was enormously influential to the black metal scene that would blossom in the nineties (the post-jail Burzum recordings are mentioned a bit later below), and in some respects very interesting on its own merits. Burzum relied less far less on blastbeats and raw speed than most black metal bands, but instead focused on midpaced, drawn out riffs with a decidedly haunting tone, with Vikernes' vocals (harsh and tortured even by black metal standards) adding a measure of evil to the mix. Varg's personal life will seemingly always keep the Burzum name in the spotlight, but there is no denying his musical influence on the black metal scene.

Though Vikernes was imprisoned in the early nineties, he continued to release music as Burzum (Filosofem was the last pre-prison album, recorded before his imprisonment though released afterward), but now confined to keyboard arrangements. As such, albums such as Daudi Baldrs have nothing to do with metal in any regard. At best, some songs have an interesting new age tone -- at worst, other songs come across as quite simplistic arrangements that really don't go anywhere. Time will tell if we have heard the last from Burzum or not.

One of the most popular black metal bands from England (or, for that matter, any country other than Norway), Cradle Of Filth has parlayed a keen eye for marketing and a consistently high quality of music to forge a stellar career that, with their recent signing to a major label, is still on the rise. Musically they are rooted in the more symphonic-based division of black metal, as pioneered by bands such as Emperor (though they have gradually strayed from the more traditional black metal style in recent years), highlighted by increasingly versatile, yet always distinctive, vocals of mainman Dani Davey. The band has survived numerous lineup changes over the years, with many members serving time in other prominent bands as shown below.

Origin: Norway

Last Update: December 18, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A charter member in the infamous Inner Circle of early Norwegian black metal bands, Darkthrone remains true to the spirit of that era. Originally known as Black Death, the band played standard Scandinavian death metal, releasing one album in that field (Soulside Journey) before deciding that the then-new wave of black metal was the way to go -- abruptly they changed style and image (adopting the corpsepaint look synonymous with the scene) and with A Blaze In The Northern Sky the legend was born. Darkthrone albums are uncompromisingly primitive, raw, evil works, mostly in a similar early black style (the aforementioned Journey and Panzerfaust, with its quite evident Celtic Frost worship, are slight variations on the theme) -- definitely not easy listens but quite notable for their influence on the black metal scene.

Upcoming Album: The Cult Is Alive, due in February 2006.

Named for an area of Icelandic lava fields, Dimmu Borgir was formed in 1993 by the trio of Shagrath, Silenoz, and Tjodalv (the first two have remained the leaders of the band, while Tjodalv recently left to form Susperia) and is unquestionably one of the most well-known and accomplished Norwegian melodic black metal bands in the scene. The current lineup has an impressive lineage, with ties to other established bands such as Cradle Of Filth, Borknagar, and Old Man's Child. As one might expect, the earlier material is a bit rawer and less developed, as the band has matured and progressed with each release without sacrificing intensity or forgetting their roots.

Drummer Nick Barker was rather suddenly dismissed from the band in February 2004, with no reason given from him or the band at the time (Barker later surmised that the band probably wanted a fellow Norwegian) His recently named replacement is Panzerchrist drummer Reno Killerich.

Emperor was one of the most well-known and most influential black metal bands of the nineties, setting the standard for symphonic Norwegian black metal with their seminal albums In The Nightside Eclipse and Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk, both considered essential releases in their field. They were also mixed up in the Euronymous/Grishnachh affair (see the Mayhem for a bit more information on that scene), leading to the arrests and sentences of two of their major players (Samoth and Faust). Nevertheless, they persevered, deciding to retire on a high note following the release of 2001's Prometheus album. The members have since concentrated on other bands such as Zyklon and Peccatum.

Evil or Very Mad Enslaved
Origin: Haugesund, Norway
Genres: Black Metal , Viking Metal
Status: Active

Last Update: January 19, 2006

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Enslaved was formed in 1992 in Haugesund, Norway, with an earlier incarnation of the band featuring none other than Hein Frode Hansen, who left to form Theatre Of Tragedy. Eventually they attracted the attention of Euronymous (of Mayhem) who signed the band to his Deathlike Silence label. That label was set to release the debut album, Vikingligr Veldi, but the chaos that ensued following Euronymous' death prevented that, and Voices Of Wonder eventually released that album, with the band later signing to Osmose, the band staying on that label for several years before a recent switch to Tabu. Though the band prefers the label "Viking Metal", Enslaved is very much a black metal band in musical style, if not in spirit. Enslaved is somewhat of a paradox -- a listen to any of their earlier albums (such as personal favorite Frost) reveals all the classic trademarks of early black metal -- the vocal stylings, the insane blast beats, that distinctive black metal guitar style -- and yet Enslaved somehow makes it original and distinctive enough so that only Enslaved could perform it. Part of this might be due to the guitar work, as it has that faintly dischordant style that occasionally reminds one of Denis D'Amour of Voivod (indeed, several sections of the Mardraum album are of the "what if Voivod played black metal" variety), and part of it might simply be that Enslaved is less derivative and more innovative than their contemporaries. The newer albums such as Mardraum and Monumension show a true expansion of their sound, incorporating new and varied influences into the mix without detracting from their past.

Upcoming Album: Ruun, due on May 08, 2006.

Enthroned is Belgium's representative in the old-school black metal field, having been formed in 1993 and with six albums to date. Bearing virtually all of the characteristics of the genre (corpsepaint, odd member names, satanic imagery and lyrics, and a fast, blast-beat-filled musical style), they are far from the most original of bands, but they are competent within the genre.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Formed in 1992 and taking their name from Lord Of The Rings (as have many other bands), Gorgoroth is a pretty typical Norwegian black metal band in many respects. They've got the standard corpsepaint visual, they have suitably black-metal-like pseudonyms, their present and past members have several ties to other black metal bands, and most importantly, their music is firmly rooted in old-school black metal, in the tradition of Darkthrone, Marduk, and the like. As a result, much of their work, particularly the early albums like Antichrist, is on the generic side -- certainly they've nailed the style to a T, but there isn't a lot that distinguishes them from other similarly-styled bands. Their most recent album, 2000's Incipit Satan, is by far their most adventurous, as they are starting to spread their wings just a bit without sacrificing any of their early evilness or intensity.

The band has had its share of notoriety in recent months, with vocalist Gaahl facing jail time on an assault charge and a recent show in Poland potentially running afoul of local law for "offending religious beliefs".
