the faq says that you can use cpanel to install phpbb. i will be able to modd it after installation, right?

Yes. But as a new user you'd be using DirectAdmin not Cpanel.
i've never used either. but just as long as i can modd my forum, i'll be happy.
You can install phpBB yourself by downloading the package from phpBB's download page.
Then install it
