Lahore, February 8: At least 3,000 protesters enraged by the alleged desecration of the Koran clashed with police and torched two cinemas in Pakistan's second largest city Lahore, police said on Wednesday.
The city, was tense after the mob rampaged through a poor neighbourhood overnight and also smashed up dozens of vehicles, local police officer Mohammad Abbas said.
The trouble erupted late on Tuesday when copies of the Muslim holy book were found lying in a drain in the Bhatta chowk area on the fringes of the sprawling city.
"The news of the desecration of the Koran spread quickly in the neighbourhood and within no time some three to four thousand people took to the streets shouting slogans against the desecration," Abbas said.
He said the crowd armed with bamboo sticks turned violent, setting fire to two cinema houses and attacking public and private properties.
"Police used a mild baton charge to restore order, but the situation is very tense," he said.
Abbas said police have registered a case against unknown people under the country's blasphemy laws.
The violent protest came amid ongoing outrage in Pakistan and other Muslim countries over the publication of cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad in European newspapers. |

man, why they do this? firstly, they throw the copies of koran into drains and then they come out on streets to kill innocent people. why are they disrespecting their own holy book and then killing their own innocent people and destroying their sources of livlihood. no one can understand .Yes, the embassy stormings makes sense, even though very extreme. This is strange.
That's one way islam and christianity are different. There won't be any deadly riots if a copy of the bible is found in a drain outside Atlanta...
of course they are different, because the bible doesnt mean anything. and it was a bunch of idiots that threw it in there, same as it would happen in your religioin, now u dotn need to blame all of islam for what these few ppl did with the book.

No, just that they don't (like some other people I know of) both profess to part of a religeon of peace and resort to violence at the slightest offence.what i meant with my post is that they are pretty much the same religioins, its just that there is a few people in these religions that give it a bad face/look and then everyone starts to hate it and post bs around the web, just cause 3 guys said they will strap bombs to themselves and kill 6 ppl for the sake of GOD. thats dumb. but w/.e

But they are killing thousands of people, and it's far more than 3 people who are "strapping bombs to themselves". Terrorism is so prevalent among Islam, that (unfortunately) terrorism has become associated with Islam. That is THEIR own fault. How is it not a hypocrisy to profess that you are a member of a peaceful faith, and carry on the murder, torture, rape, etc. of people?
Notice how the majority of the problems come from the middle east, and what a coincidence that it's Islam as well. I'm not against Islam, I'm not saying all Muslims are terrorists, I'm saying that TOO many are, and TOO many people are dying because of it.Well, all these middle east countries werent like that a few years back.
