Ok, everyone who fallows the film business already knows this, but let me paraphase those who don't.
Brokeback mountain, a new gay cowboy film comes out in limited release about 2-3 months ago. First, everyone though it wouldn't do that much business because it wouldn't appeal to the overwhelming straight crowd with its subject matter (not that the gay crowd isn't big, just not big enough by itself to propel this movie to success). Then, it was released in just a few art houses in NY and LA, and hey what do you know, it did really well for a limited release film. Since then the film has gone national and grossed somewhere in the $50 Million dollar Range, and has won all kinds of awards. It was thought to be a front runner for the Academy awards and that was confirmed when it was nominated for 8 Oscars, the highest for any film this year. Up to this point no film with this heavy of a gay theme has won the Best Picture award.
Ok, now that the backstory is out of the way, people think it should or shouldn't win the conveted Best Picture for a number of reasons. Some people say that it should win or loose based on its artisticle value with out regard to what th story line is. Some say that it shouldn't win just because it will influencing potentially millions of kids with the idea that gay love is not only okay, but is cool. These are just some of the bigger arguements I have heard since the Academy Awards Announcement, and I want to hear all the other opinions or views out their regarding the film and it's possibility of winning. Give your opinion and then vote in the pole please!
