Soaring oil prices in 2005 have helped Royal Dutch Shell report a record annual profit for a UK-listed company.
The Anglo-Dutch energy giant generated profits of $22.94bn (£13.12bn) - up nearly a third on last year when it set a UK record with profits of $17.59bn

So shell have reported massive profits again. A profit of £13 billion is just too much too comprehend. Sure when you look at percentages it seems quite insignificant but it is still £13 billion.
I suppose in a way it's a good thing as around 60% is taxed and that ultimately benefits the economy. I hope Shell invest a substantial amount to research alternate energy sources and the profits aren't just lining the pockets of the privileged few at the top of the food chain.
What are your thoughts on these record breaking profits?
I think it shows that even though our gas prices are high, they don't actually need to be that high. If these companies are making record profits then it isn't actually costing them anymore to deliver the gasoline to the consumer. They are just conveniently raising rates to line their pockets after consumers suspect that something (hurricanes, wars, etc) will cause the price to go up. I seriously can't wait until the world is not dependant upon oil. I really wish I was smart enough to come with alternative fuels.
if u only knew how much destruction they cause , u wouldnt care about money ,
Where once there were hills and trees , now there lies plane land with Only rocks
if they make such profits , they should put some money back and plant more trees
I couldn't agree more Devil. No company needs that much market share and it is ridiculous that they have the rights to drain the earths non-renewable fuels and then make massive profits because western society (if not the world in general) is held to ransom by the black gold.
You may have noticed I'm not a fan of the large corps..

Lots of hills and trees in the sea where they drill for oil.
I'm not too happy with Shell either. Not that I'm interested in bashing them (lol) but they're too economically focused. It's not those destroyed landscapes I care about in the first place, but the abuse of resources for "economical reasons". If anyone would be able to make a difference in the pollution problem it's them.
Usually I can't stand people who are always against the big evil corporations by definition, for reasons they blindly copy ("agreeing and being agreed to"). Nice mass culture you guys have with that. But in the case of Shell I'm also more or less against their behaviour, not because of the mass culture but for reasons described above.
