htaccess

I am supposed to have an htaccess file in my site but I cannot find it. Is this file necessary for search engines to index my site?? Because two months ago (I know the file was there) I was being visited by several robots and indexed my page at several search engines such as yahoo but now no robot has visited me as well as the links have not been updated and the new ones do not appear.
Should I replace this file since I am using a CMS. I am afraid to loose my ranking at yahoo specially.

.htaccess files are configuration files, to make the server do various things, like redirects. They are not needed for a basic website, and no having one will not stop robots crawling your site.

Check this page for more info on .htaccess files:

What ftp program are you using?
If you have the opportunity to type in ftp commands, type in "LIST -a" to see all hidden files like .htaccess (if it is just hidden, off course). It should work...
If you DON'T have the ability to type inn ftp commands, you should choose another ftp program.

Basically you can configure your site for multiple things (password protection, redirect, mod_rewrite, etc.) with the .htaccess file.

Thanks for the link.

.htaccess can be used for 301 and 302 redirection, converting dynamic URLs to static pages and even pass protect folders. if that file is not present just create a text file and name it as .htaccess and upload into your ftp

I think it is worth noting that htaccess files are quite complex and not easy to get to do what you want. They are an advanced feature, that most users will not require to use.

Hi,

You can find and download .htaccess file simply with FTP commands that every FTP client supports.

Try with get .htaccess and download on local file directory. Then if you need anything to change within .htaccess file just use any txt editor and replace there or add .htaccess commands.

.htaccess file is very powerful and is used maily for URL rewriting, if you are using ant CMS that comes with URL rewrite that you'll find there .htaccess commands for URL rewrite.

Also , .htaccess is used for 301 permanet redirect, if youo need to redirect a site to another site or just to redirect a page to another page. 301 redirect method using .htaccess file is a search engine method that si used currently for redirects while 302 is SE friendly temporarily redirect.

A great site for using mod_rewrite in htaccess files:
http://www.modrewrite.com/

They have great tutorials and a very helpful forum. Great for beginners who can find this very difficult to get to grips with.
