Ragnarok Online took a good 6 months of my life away and it has a very healthy and stable private server community. Google "Ragnarok 200" for a top list of sites.
I've played mu online, i find it a good game, but now im moving to play knight online ...
Guild Wars is supposed to be a good game thats free online but you have to buy the CD.
I play Guild Wars and like it alot. For the first few levels, it is alot like Diablo. Then, once the searing happens, the game morphs a bit and becomes more multiplayer. As you proceed, your maximum party size increases from 4 to 6 to 8. It also has a PvP mode that I haven't tried yet.
For the most part, it is lots of fun, with the best graphics I've ever seen in a multiplayer RPG. For $50 with no monthly fees, its a pretty good deal as you get hundreds of hours of playing time.
P.S. Why has nobody mentioned Anarchy Online?

Off-Topic, I really liked RYL. I know it's not free anymore but still I spent alot of time with this game. At the time I reached to the final level [level 95], they started to chrage money on playing.

Well my favourite would have to be Fairyland. Too bad it's designed for girls but i still liked it. I didn't really like those strange quests involving things like how the little matchstick girl was an arsonist. It was still fun and it lasted quite a while.

I've spent much time playing MU online on global and private servers - that pretty nice one.
Next to go (considering the time-usage) is Lineage II - private servers of course.

Im sorry but my free MMORPG life was crashed by Runescape, now I hate most all of them. Runescape is a great kids game but once you hit the age of 10+ its pretty stupid and gets annoying if the geek behind you in math class keeps going on about how he killed a king black dragon

Guild Wars rules because of no montly fees and the grapichs are very high. World Of Warcraft is a nice game to but i don't like to pay monthly for a game. The only thing is wow updates are included and gw will release expansions.

My Best MMORPG is Maple Story
I've heard from friends that Guild Wars must be the best MMORPG available today. I've played it once and i think its amazing. My friend just bought 6 copies in order to get all his 6 computers working online!! haha

I use Gunbound, it's very funny! But you really don't must play it when you have a high Ping! The program has fixed nice, so it will be very slow then!

Enemy territory is a great game but I dont really consider it an MMO. I dont know of any good MMO that I will find for free except knights online and that doesnt run on my pc.

Lol.. Wow is not free.. And if your tlking about private servers, they are illegal besides that private servers are laggy not as fun as the us server.

no jokedon't really know much about MMORPGs but i did play Guild Wars for a little while. Got pretty tierd pretty fast. It has a reletivly good story line but it is a short one. It doesn't take very long to complete all of the main missons (aprrox 1 month.) And now that i had done all of them and pretty much all of the quests there isnt much to do exept to wait for all of the small add ons and improvments. In total it is a pretty big waste of time. but it is free. But you d have to buy it, but you dont have to pay a monthly fee.
But now im told there are new character classes and i know there is "chapter 2" coming out soon, i wont be buying and i quit th egame a little while ago.

I would recommand Guild Wars. Strickly speaking, it's not MMORPG. It's MMO in town but when you do the missions you are in your own instance with the team you form in town. But anyway, it's great fun to play and without monthly fee if that was what you defined as 'free'.
There will be 1-2 expansions coming out each year for Guild Wars, each expansion is said to be major improvement to the game with new classes, new equipments, new maps, etc.
PvE-wise, Guild Wars is very OK. PvP-wise, it just purely rocks.

Definitely World of Warcraft. Even if you have to pay. (There's always a way around that.)
Ragnarok Online is pretty fun =) A friend and I host our own private server.
Lineage2 is also a very fun game. Takes a lot of time and effort though, so if you're not a very serious gamer (like me) it takes a while

I play a lot of Entropia Universe (http://entropiauniverse.com) lately. It can be free if you do a lot of "sweating" there, i.e. collect freebies from certain creatures. A bit dangerous sometimes, can be fun in groups of players but can also be boring if done alone. You can sell that sweat to other players ONLY, as it has no "official" value. I have started the game with this and found it to be fun for a month or so until I put some money into it to buy a bigger gun I still regularly sweat but only for my own needs (I like the "mindforce" tricks, like short range teleporting).
I must admit that I have not tried many other MMORPGs lately, but I still play Entropia after over a year. The game changes gradually due to new content about every month.

i was addicted to runescape for a while but then it got old after like a year. i heard that Guild Wars was fun. if you are going to spend money though get WoW. best MMORPG EVER

By free do you mean 100% free? Becuse many of the 100% free ones have hidden charges.
That said one you buy Guild Wars, it is 100% free play afterwards.

I like Sherwood Dungeon from http://maidmarian.com . It may not be the best RPG, but it is the best small RPG. It's flash, no need to download, just click an play like any other free flash online games. I also played SilkRoad (Europe)

I have found runescape to be the easiest free mmorpg, because it requires no downloads and you can play it easily with dial-up. however, the graphics are pretty poor, and you are bombarded with "you cant do that becuase you dont give us money" stuff. i dont play many mmorpgs tho, they have such large download sizes and my computer isnt very fast.[/u]
yo i played knight online and its good game i give it 9.0out of 10 cuz its really easy to lvl up to lvl 20 then it gets harder also u get ur skill change at lvl 10. One more thing, u can make ur wepons glow if u upgrade them to lvl 8+

I've been looking for a free skill based mmorpg... not point and click( like SilkRoad). I want a gameplay like Fable/Knights of the Temple/etc...
Besides Entropia Universe (http://www.entropiauniverse.com, I still play it, see posts above), there is another game, which I pay occasionally: Rappelz by gPotato (http://rappelz.gpotato.com). Completely free (and very playable without paying), but you can buy high-end items and some other goodies with hard cash. Comes with the usual features plus a very nice pet system.

My favorite is planeshift .. www.planeshift.it It is open source so it is under continuous development, besides, I like to encourage the idea of open source and any active open source project.
I also played silkroad online, but Its community in my country (players) is not the best, and I played runescape as well .. I think it is good to be a browser game but not to be compared with other client-based games
