Invisibility cloak patented !

Quote:

A professor from chair of quantum and optical electronics of the Ulyanovsk State University in western Russia has patented a method of making things invisible, Interfax news agency reported.

The so-called invisibility cloak, created by Oleg Gadomsky, is called “The method of conversion of optical radiation” in the patent.

Gadomsky had been long experimenting on nanoparticles of gold. Thus, he invented a sub-micron stratum of microscopical colloid golden particles that makes an object placed behind it invisible for an observer.

“Only static objects can be made invisible for the time present, as during motion a radiation frequency changes. But soon it will be possible to create a cap of darkness and a magic cloak of Harry Potter, the scientist believes.

Is this for real? Can you maybe give a web refrence to what you have said, and can somebody please give their opinions on this! I mean this could be the greates or worst discovery of the century! And the moral implications of any new technology is always taken out proportion, so let it BEGIN!
orno
as far as i remember this had to do something with camera capturing what was ahead of the person and then displaying that on some new "wearable" display to make the person wearing the cloak appear invisible...

atleast its a start
silentpark
well sadly the sources are all very unspecifiec we will see what up with...

(well i hope this is real Smile
hrtorrent
That's interesting.
Can you give us some link where's officialy published that news?
thiamshui
wow.. this would b interesting.. however, even if it's real, i doubt the authorities would make it legal for use by anyone.. By allowing people to be invisible, it could give rise to crimes such as theft. Well, I hope it is real and hope it's invented soon though..
bassgs_17
I heard about that! They use a projector to project the image onto a canvas-like cloak... Pretty cool illusion, eh?

Until somebody stands in front of the projector. Yeah, this ain't invisibility. Heck, it isn't even a very good trick, as I can't see this having many practical applications outside of the entertainment industry.
Kael
It could have several useful applications. Namely military and Law enforcement. Not to mention just the cool factor of it all.

It's too bad this is a hoax. That picture was taken with a guy wearing a white coat standing in front of a screen that had an image projected onto it. Anyone can see that.
KHO
Neutral That's insane Neutral where did you get this information?
izimngcubes15
If this is real, that would be awesome. Who would have thought this would be possible. I would want one Smile
Srs2388
I want one too... that would be so awesome
katzung
Yeah i have to agree, this is totally nuts Exclamation
Ah the joys of technology. It started with the wheel and now we have moved onto invisibility cloaks. Someone has been reading into Harry Potter a little bit too seriously.
Still, would be fun to have on..... Cool
Soulfire
It's mostly an optical illusion, as it takes a projector and a special coat for you to achieve "invisibility." And you really aren't invisible, as you can see from the picture, it's still pretty obvious.
Kaisonic
That is freakin' sweet. You know what this reminds me of? That one scene in Die Another Day where James Bond is sneaking into the ice palace and must hide behind his car to evade the watchman's eyes. But if the car worked as Q said it did (tiny cameras on one side that projected the image on the other), technically Bond would be visible on the other side of the car when he hides behind it. I dunno, just something I wanted to mention.

Only STATIC images? So if you are moving it is useless? I can paint a static image to appear as it's background, what's the big deal? It certainly doesn't seem like there is any military advantages to this particular type of technology. At least the Stealth Fighter/Bomber utilizes Radar bending to make itself seem invisible to current tech...what good would it be to make a static target invisible? Unless you were trying to hide a building....then why not just take it off the GPS marking system....like they have already done in the US for government buildings?

If the uses are not military, then why make the (potential) target invisible?

if i could get under an invisi, cloak i would sneak into the girls changeroom @ school alot Very Happy we got some hot ones in my class

But you can't move... you'd have to be standing still, otherwise they can see the movement.
Marston
I've seen a television program about this - it only works if you look at the cloak through a special type of lens, rendering the entire invention useless.

LMAO....OK, point well taken.

I guess I am also, does that make me a bad person? At least I am above board about it.

yea this was shown on techtv several years ago. its just an illusion too bad. i'm suprised the entertainment biz hasn't had a frenzy over it like they did with "bullet time". i think the 007 car thing would be feasable as long as you had nano camera and nano size displays; though even then it would complicated as hell. and yes he evidently likes his porn Rolling Eyes haha.
LandShark
Its amazing what people can actually do when it comes to science, but so many people have attempted this before, no one that im aware being able to do it yet. Im not quite sure if this guy is legit, because im sure if it was you would hear about stuff like it on all the major news stations. It would b e pretty cool if was actually real though
Ricky
I would want an invisability cloak
to scare my little sister
ChargerBear

One of the posts said beacause it only cloaks static items right now, there was no military advantage to the cloak. I disagree.
An example: Cloaking a tank at the entrance to Asama Bin Ladin's hideout. When he comes out to go to the outhouse KABOOM!

If that were the case would it then it become a non-static target? The option to fire would then entail the barrel to move (recoil of the barrel being the action involved), thus creating a non-stationary target and negating any type of "static invisibility" that the target has thus far acheived. I agree that the end result may be worthwhile, as in Bin Laden being blown up, but the point here is INVISIBILITY. That means also being invisible to the enemy gunners as they try to seek revenge for blowing up thier leader.

Don't you see...if you move, you become a target, if you stay still, you don't. It seems a very simple problem, and also one that science has yet to overcome. I'm not saying it can't be overcome, just that it hasn't as yet.

Yes i know but id sneak in before class,, but i was referring to the cloak in harry potter,,, if they had one like that then i would be in there in 2 secs Very Happy

I can't use Photoshop to any real result, and I found my avatatar on the Internet....at least I don't try to pass myself as something I am not, or at least lead people to believe, I am something I am not.
ekingisrael
first of all-I must confess-I truely believe that this is a total boolshit!!!
the picture is a poor photoshop work.

ALTHOUGH THOSE FACTS!!!!!

I truely believe that the modern science is really close to making this kind of optical illusions-the American forces are developing the same thing, but with all do the respect to russia-first of all they should try to keep the're ships intact-then we'll talk of developing the next generation of science.
at this time-russia can't really bring the hot stuff. Twisted Evil

If someone was TRULY invisible...they'd be blind too. Cool invention though...

SWEET...
these kinda things motivate me to work, so I can be rich and buy those things Very Happy. I've got a long way to go Crying or Very sad

All these posts. People thinking this is still possible ........
Did anyone read my post? it's a hoax. This has been around for a while.
I can just see the guy who did this laughing at everyone who thinks this is real.
XxGunner
Pretty nice but too bad he isnt totally invisible, and also why do they create these inventions the it'll be easier for robbers to rob banks and also for other stuff.

SCENARIO

The bank is all nice and everything all of a sudden someone takes out the cameras, officers, and the clerk dudes. Everyone goes ballistic and try to run out the door but its locked, so the robbers take off the cloaks and say freeze this is a stick up and everyone freezes while the robbers rob the bak. And no one can do anything.

LOL well thats what i think, but lets just hope that doesnt happen... Laughing
OnlyOneLife
Too bad the government will steal it and use it for military operations... it might not be that effective since, you can still tell there is a person there....
Helios
If it's true:

Russia pwned America yet again Laughing

Like Kael said, it could easily by a guy wearing a white coat standing in front of a projector. Why would a person be wearing a coat like that anyway?
Someone posts a picture of some bullcrap and everybody believes it.... jeez.
elTibor
Definetly something I would add to list if I had that type of cash to spend.

I would love to be the person actually providing the demo for that type of technology. I wonder if it could be mass produced.

According to another article gold atoms bend the light around the object and project it on the back. Forget about gold rings for christmas, i'll have my gold atoms put to better use doing this.

lol
yukimura_gw
It's really hard to believe, It really look photoshoped.

But real life cloaking....
Lots of possibility...

I see most of them for negative doing

The general posting behind this seems to indicate that this is a camera projection from say front to rear to achieve Static invisability.......what about the sides and above and all the angles in between ?
SunburnedCactus
I'm yet to see a working version of camera projection, as it is completely impractical with currently available technologies.
Sidewinder07
This technology is new and has been around for awhile. It only works if the thing being invisible and the person watching it are stationary. The object being made invisible has to have a coating of a paint similar to road signs that are reflective from all angles. The technology could be more useful for other things. For example pilots could use it to "see through" their planes.
Panthrowzay
*shakes head* there are holes mircosized in the coat coating works like fiber optics to bend everything at a angle so you go invisable. and not just gold does this any metal. if you have a set of Colliers encyclopedias it is in the yearbook.
kutegoddezz
wow this is so cool i wonder if people will actually use this invention. i have heard about making things invisible by using the power of the mind. it's really cool i wanna know more about this and see it in action. what would you use it for?
bliushift
this seems like an old concept that finally has the hardware catch up to the theoreticals. i believe that until the perfection of "invisibility" there will be the increase of countermeasures of such a technology to make it correctly utilized but not overly powerful. video games have this concept, yet even the limitations are shown in those same video games. "invisibility cloaks" produce a shimmer as in Halo, where the user can be seen due to the inaccuracies and the lack of consideration of the dimensions of the cloak and the user.

The net is vast and limitless (from Ghost in The Shell, with cloaking mantles and other useful gadgets) Laughing Laughing
