What is your favorite quote?
Mine is this one from Miracle.
Great moments... are born from great opportunity. And that's what you have here, tonight, boys. That's what you've earned here tonight. One game. If we played 'em ten times, they might win nine. But not this game. Not tonight. Tonight, we skate with them. Tonight, we stay with them. And we shut them down because we can! Tonight, WE are the greatest hockey team in the world. You were born to be hockey players. Every one of you. And you were meant to be here tonight. This is your time. Their time is done. It's over. I'm sick and tired of hearing about what a great hockey team the Soviets have. Screw 'em. This is your time. Now go out there and take it. - Herb Brooks
I don't really have a favorite quote, but "I solemly swear that I am up to no good" (from Harry Potter) had been bugging me for a long time.
Two of my favorites are:
"... then must you speak/Of one that loved not wiseley, but too well"
and
"Beware the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword. It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind.... And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and the blood boil with hate and the mind has closed, the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry. Rather, the citizenry, infused with fear and blinded with patriotism, will offer up all of their rights unto the leader, and gladly so. How do I know? For this is what I have done. And I am Caesar."

Wow! This is an interesting topic [Favorite Quotes] which seems to have been dormant for 8 months. Maybe folks can resurrect it. I like reading thought-provoking quotes. Here are a few that have caught my fancy today.
Dame Margot Fonteyn "Take your work seriously, but never yourself."
Dylan Thomas "Someone is boring me . . . I think it is me."
J. W von Goethe "Everybody wants to be somebody, but no one wants to grow."
James Hillman "I bear a uniqueness that asks to be lived and that is already present before it is lived."
Thomas Merton "What can be gained from sailing to the moon if we are not able to cross the abyss that separates us
from ourselves?"
Chuang Yzu "Last night I dreamt I was a butterfly. Today, I am a butterfly dreaming I am a man."
Thank you for sharing your insights and for adding to your favorite quote to this forum.
I'm up for keeping this going. I love a good quote. But we need to pay attention the firhost rules and use the quote tags like this
| Quote: |
Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character give him power. Abraham Lincoln

Hi HoboPelican,
Thanks for the reminder to use quotes. I thought we only used quotes to quote something from a previous thread in the Frihost Forum. Hereon after, I will use quotes for outside references as well.
By the way, I like your Abraham Lincoln quote too. It is true that power does corrupt. It is sad that at work I have seen different leaders come and go. Some horde power and are reviled by their constituents for being power mongers. Then a different leader comes in... a servant leader who give all his or her power away, empowers others, and then the constituents greedily take the power and become corrupted and act like fools -- a school of piranha would be a better description of them.
All in all, a sad but true reality.

Hi Mannix,
Thanks for sharing one of your favorite quotes. This quote evokes an idea I learned in graduate school from one of my mentors. He was quite an extraordinary man; one whom I thought had quite an enlightened outlook on life. For example, and as it relates to your quote above, he taught me to “always ask the question again.” In his view, we are never the same person from moment to moment because no two moments are the same and presumably we are always growing in knowledge and experience such that internal (mental/psychological) and external (constant flux of environmental changes) are always changing and new. Hence, if the answer will always be different.
The “illusion of knowledge” is when the erudite parades their “canned” and “static” answers to a question they asked once 20 years ago and cling to it as an uncontested, static “truth.”
Thanks for the stimulating quote,

Since most of the messages in this thread will be just quoted material, there's very little that will actually merit the earning of points or FRIH$, so (since much of it is also humourous), I have moved this to the "Jokes" forum.
With that out of the way...

Picasso was in a park when a woman approached him and asked him to draw a portrait of her. Picasso agreed and quickly sketches her. After handing the sketch to her, she is pleased with the likeness and asks how much she owed to him. Picasso replies: "$5,000."
The woman screamed, "but it took you only five minutes."
"No, madam, it took me all my life," replied Picasso.

Well, there was yet another quotes thread going, so I have also merged it all together.
On June 27, 1743 in Flanders, Belgium a Lieutenant-Colonel Agnew of Lochnaw, 5th Baronet gave his men a command out of which the saying “Don’t shoot until you see the whites of their eyes” originates.
He changed orthodox tactic (infantry attacked by cavalry), which was to stand in a square and not move, fighting off the assault, to, opening the square and allowing the cavalry in putting them in a death zone of crossfire. Not too safe if you’re a Fusilier, but deadly when you’re a French cuirassier.
When the cuirassiers attacked Agnew gave the command for the square to open along with the award winning quote, "Dinna fire till ye can see the whites of their e' en . . . if ye dinna kill them they'll kill you."
The French were creamed and a friggen cool phrase was coined. Cha-ching!
Later King George II, who was a right pompous twit said to Agnew "So, Sir. I hear the cuirassiers rode through your regiment today." To which he aptly quipped, "Ou, ay, yer Majestee, but they didna get oot again."
(From an article in the Journal of the Royal Highland Fusiliers).
