truth is: there is no need to reinvent the wheel. if the work was already done (somewhere else) and is something usefull for our community, i have to thank yule for finding it and bringing it here. the original posters name is a nice touch, showing respect for his work (i want to believe it was left there on purpose).

Uhm , as far as I know WinRAR is not free. But then again - I may be wrong.
Windows Media Player is also not free. You will have a hard time playing it on a non-windows system
Here you'll find the similar software for linux to many software for windows such as office, games, utilities, programmming environments, etc.
I hope it be useful.

I've found the Microsoft Anti-Spyware (beta) does a pretty good job. I used to use Spybot and Ad-Aware exclusively, but this program found stuff that they didn't.
I've come to the conclusion.. that to rid yourself completely of any adware or virii you need EVERY antivirus and antiadware program there is lol. That is always the case with those programs. One catches things the others dont.. they all catch something the other ones dont.

very nice and informative list. people need to know that paying $$ is not always the best route... often open source/free programs offer much greater functionality for FREE...

This is starting to sound rather very redundant, but anyway: great list, and great thanks for taking the time to compile it.
Here's my addition:
Netbeans: this is a new and great crossplatform Java IDE -- for any developers out there.
Google Talk: New Instant Messaging Client by Google (Beta). Requires a gmail account -- if you don't have one, PM me and I'll send you an invitation.
Thanks for your nice list .
I add to it Opera web-browser.
Opera 8.5 is free and the best web browser.

Irfanview (image viewer)
Cannot stress enough; very awesome, small image viewer. Especially works well also as a Batch-Conversion tool (like if you wanted to reduce 100 pictures to 150x150 resolution and compress to JPEG).

Really impressed ny the list; Almost everything for free!!!
Also very thankful for a few links. And to add one more:
http://www.maxthon.com Maxthon browser - A very good one, with few useful plugins (combo version) and lot of skins and plugins to download. Also very good parasite, popup and activeX protection level.
kenetix
Here are other two sites that I can recommend:
http://www.softpedia.com - all sorts of software(for windows, linux & mac), news, reviews, drivers
http://www.soft32.com - this one has all sorts of software too

at the risk of sounding repetitive, great list
you can get more by searching for linux alternatives for windows programs, but of course that works for linux only
These all give you the functionality of PGP (they use GnuPG http://www.gnupg.org) but they don't cost you anything at all, and are a bit more "lightweight" than the new PGP, which has somewhere around 1000 registry entries, I believe.
it's a great program, i've found several spyware that i didn't initially find with any other program. the free version blocks all incoming spyware but if you want to scan your PC, you'll have to pay for it but other then that, it's a very useful program that i recommend for everybody.
I propose to add this other tool:
Ccleaner cleans your windows temp files and all the rotten stuff slowering down your computer. You can select which things you want to clean, or just scan without cleaning, in order to know which unused files your computer is having on the hard disk.
Here is the URL: http://www.ccleaner.com/
I use it very often and it is working very well.

Loved the list as well, the only thing I would add is that if you are on OS X and you want a good IM chat client, use Adium (http://www.adiumx.com), it is so much better than iChat. But most likely, no one else uses Apple computers sigh.

miranda is the best of course! i carry my msn, yahoo, google, icq list in 400 KB of miranda in my usb:)

Symantec bought them out, and replaced it with theri overbloated excuse of a firewall... although if you search you can still find a few copies of sygate floating around.
m0n0wall - http://m0n0.ch/wall/ - Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) firewall. Extremely compact (< 5 MB), requires an old PC, two NICs and either a bottable CDROM drive or a CompactFlash (CF) card - (Transcend makes a really nice one - http://tinyurl.com/c5fk7 )

This depends on the program itself - there are very few commercial programs that will run without an installation since they require changes in the registry, file associations etc.
If you want to keep a "clean" copy of Windows and use another to install a load of apps, you could possibly look into VMWare - there's a free trial version available.
Otherwise, I don't really understand why you would want to run programs without installing them.

Well Everytime I try to install battlefield 2 it freezes at de/whidata0.htm which is annoying and it worked perfectly fine when I first bought it. It was either I found a program or reinstall it which is too much work.

thanks, that is an awesome list. i just wanted to mention that winlibre is an entire suite of free software, which includes some of the items on the list and adds others. it is currently at release 0.3.1, but many of the programs in the suite are bulletproof, with the source code available on sourceforge. Winlibre is available at http://www.winlibre.com.
One of my favorite apps in the package is PDFCreator, which is an open source program to make PDF files from most wordprocessing or graphics packages. I have Adobe PDF creator 5, and actually like the functionality of the free package more.
Winlibre also includes openoffice, an MP3 player with Oogvorbis support, an MP3 ripper, VLCMedia player for video playback, ClamWin for antivirus support (which I find to be not quite a user friendly as Avast!), and Nettime for syncrhonization to timeservers.
I have not tested all of the applications yet (they are on my spare/test machine now, and I am trying them out as time permits). The ones I have tested all seem to work well, and the installations package is pretty friendly. One workd of advice, if you are installing the winlibre package, do not restart between applications when they ask (some, like the Java2 installation want to know if you would like to reboot after that portion of the Winlibre install). i found that it is best to install all of the applications you have chosen before rebooting.

I especially like the Yahoo! Widget Engine (aka Konfabulator) if you have a couple of megs extra RAM for it.
That's a long list, but maybe you could add a description for each program. I would rather read about what something does before I go to the home page and find it is something I don't need or want.
7-zip:This free program provide higher compression ratio in new 7z format with LZMA compression. It supported packing formats:7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR and unpacking formats: RAR, CAB, ARJ, LZH, CHM, Z, CPIO, RPM and DEB. 7-Zip comes with both GUI version and powerful command line version.

Security Tools
Nirsoft's CPORTs displays the list of all currently opened TCP/IP and UDP ports on your local computer. For security reason, CurrPorts also automatically mark with pink color suspicious TCP/UDP ports owned by unidentified applications. Personally, I found this one is better than ActivePort, because it offers export the port information to HTML/XML/Text file with command line options.
Spybot Search & Destroy: Besides its main objective is removing adwares/spywares/dialers/keyloggers/trojans/usage tracks, Spybot-SD has many valuable features such as Tea Timer (real-time registry protection); A comprehensive System report. Especially, System Startup section shows the important degree of programs that loaded at startup based on Paul Collins Startup list. With its help, I have removed a lot of unnecessary programs (almost are programs' update checkers), thus reducing system load, and save network bandwidth.
KL-Dectector : This portable program is used to find out whether your activity is being recorded without your knowledge. It is designed to be able to detect all keyloggers. Best for use in public computer.
Portable ClamWin: Standalone Virus Scanner that can automatic downloads of Virus Database updates
ZoneAlarm: The best rated free firewall program. A MUST for every Internet User. ZoneAlarm monitors all activity on your computer and alert you when a new application attempts to access the Internet

Bart's PE Builder helps you build a "BartPE" (Bart Preinstalled Environment) bootable Windows CD-Rom or DVD from the original Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 installation/setup CD, very suitable for PC maintenance tasks.
It will give you a complete Win32 environment with network support, a graphical user interface (800x600) and FAT/NTFS/CDFS filesystem support. Very handy for burn-in testing systems with no OS, rescuing files to a network share, virus scan and so on. This will replace any Dos bootdisk in no time!
When i want a program, i get it. those free-progs can't race photoshop and stuff.. but still nice for when you've nothing to do, right or wrong?

Here is a list of freeware, or free software I've compiled that'll make your life much more easier. I've put a lot of hard work into this, so be nice. Thank you.
OpenOffice:
OpenOffice is a great replacement for MicroSoft Office and has much more features.

Foxit PDF Reader:
Foxit PDF Reader is a small and fast PDF reader that loads faster than Acrobat!
FileZilla:
Fillezilla is a great FTP program that has a lot of features and a user-friendly interface.
Picasa 2:
Picasa is a great program for managing image and pictur librarys and is recommended for the unorganized photographer and digital artist!
Google Desktop:
Google Desktop is a very hander search engine for your computer's files and documents if your looking for one or two!
IrfanView:
IrfanView is a great image vewer that is small and fast so you don't even have to install it to your hard drive! Just put it on a CD/DVD/Pen Drive/Flash Drive and your set! It also has a better resizer than PhotoShop and has so much options that you can forget about ACDSee!

I have wasted countless hours of my life searching high and low for decent free software. This list is basically everything I have ever found.

sandboxie
Nice utility. Free. Sandboxie intercepts changes to both your files and registry settings, making it virtually impossible for any software to reach outside the sandbox.
It means you can run any suspicious programm from the sandbox, to make sure that no dangerous actions perfromed. After it you can do a real installation.
carlospro7
nice, thanks for posting this. I have it bookmarked just in case I find myself in need for one of these files.
It supports Encryption algorithms: AES-256, Blowfish (448-bit key), CAST5, Serpent, Triple DES, and Twofish.
AES is currently Rijndael.
I think its worth adding to the list.

It happily runs alongside the .NET framework as well. For any serious developer it's an excellent solution.
TopStyle Lite
The best CSS editor I have come across. There is a Pro version at a cost, but for CSS editing, this free version is superb.
Notepad2
An excellent replacement for Windows Notepad. It has syntax highlighting for numerous programming and markup languages, and the colours used for the highlighting are configurable.
Notepad++
My favourite text editor. Just as with Notepad2, this is a Windows Notepad replacement. It's not quite as nice to look at compared with Notepad2, although some configuration can make it look nicer. Plus it has a tabbed interface which is very handy if you're working on more than one file at a time, or need to copy something from one file to another without having two windows open.
SmartFTP
In my opinion, the best free FTP program available. It's certainly one of the nicest to look at, borrowing it's look from MS Office 2003.
Portable Apps Suite
An excellent suite of free applications that run from a USB drive. The standard instalation includes: ClamWin Portable (antivirus), Mozilla Firefox - Portable Edition (web browser), Gaim Portable (instant messaging), OpenOffice.org Portable (office suite), Sudoku Portable (puzzle game), Mozilla Sunbird - Portable Edition (calendar/task manager) and Mozilla Thunderbird - Portable Edition (email client). This runs really well on a 512MB drive, but if you have a larger drive spare to use for this, you can add many more free portable apps such as Opera, Audacity, 7Zip, RoboForm, NVu, The GIMP, Filezilla, Sumatra PDF, the afformentioned Notepad++. Basically any application that claims to run on a USB stick can be included in this. When open, it just puts an icon the "systray" or "notification area" on your machine.

I suppose mIRC should be on the list under IRC clients. I mean sure it does prompt you to register after 30 days but after about 5 seconds you can click continue and continue to use it anyways. registering only removes the box that tells you to register and you lose no functionality if you don't register, or gain any new features if you do

Hi friend,
Thank you for the wonderful post. The links you have posted are very useful for me and for many. I am sure that you have spent lot of your precious time to gather this information of Free Applications. I would like to say that these applications are not free but they are paid by some other good precious people like you who spent their valuable time to design and to share with friends around the wold.
Thanks to this list, I got Super,
which seems to be like what J F K was recommending in command line conversion for DVD production.
Super just gives a nice front end for it.
I'll be looking at earlier recommendations for a free DVD burning software, rather than the non-pro Nero I got with my new low-cost box.
Happy New Year, too.

I want to recommend a program called Launchy. It's an awesome tool that will enhance your work under Windows framework. Something like Run menu, but much much better. Allows you to run almost any program that you ever installed on your computer. You can also configure a hotkey to run it.

I forgot to add another program I like. It's a small, ultra light, and free PDF reader. It's called Foxit Reader. I had a few problems with Adobe's Reader so I looked for an alternative, and found it. Really good and does it's job.

And I must say, it works really well.

Firewalls
ZoneAlarm
This is my favorite firewall. Made by Zone Labs, it will render your computer invisible to hackers? probes. Hackers run scanning programs over the Internet, looking for computers with electronic openings, called ports. A good firewall such as ZoneAlarm makes your computer invisible to the scanners. (Note: This program phones home)
The goal of these intruders is to place a Trojan horse on your computer. The rogue program uses the open port previously identified by a scanner. However, ZoneAlarm blocks those transmissions. They can only go through if you agree. Always say no, unless you recognize the program.

"warez") sites. Run CWShredder after installing, and have it look for updates. Then click the "Fix" button, and the program will both scan and fix any problems it finds. If your system does not have this kind of spyware, it will give you the good news.

Hijack This
A program designed to fix browsers whose home pages and settings have been altered or "hijacked," Hijack This! requires some knowledge to be used safely. What about benchmarking? What is a good and reliable software to evaluate my hardware?
Just ask something: which of these are exactly waveform audio edition tools like Audacity, Sony Sound Forge and Adobe Audition? I'm looking for one!
Faraz
Thank you for the list. Quite handy.

silverdown you can check out www.comodo.com for another free firewall software. It also has a free anti virus program and anti-malware program. I've used them before and it seems pretty good.
another good sofware for converting anything to PDF is by using primopdf. you can get it from www.primopdf.com

This is an excellent list!
I was cleaning out my computer today, and remeber this list was here at frihost. As soon as I cleared out all the junk I didn't want anymore, I cam stright here and replaced some of my old programs with some from this list.
Thanks a lot!
Phil
The free version of Winamp is pretty neat...... as a player. Can't rip CDs to MP3.
Foobar is neat too. My only problem is that you need to do considerable tweaking to it to configure it.
A free CD Ripping program I use is EAC, Exact Audio Copy. Not built for speed though. Made to get, well.... an exact copy of the cd.

You should see if you can get this topic merged with the one that is already stickied.

Hijackthis and other hack-cleaning for registry aren't quite good, because they can delete the reg table for antivirus update, browser home page, etc.
Chris24
There is also a program called ncleaner, that cleans ur system and registry as well. Works pretty damn good if ya ask me
Ghost Rider103
That program called CCleaner is awesome!
I downloaded it and checked it out, it has some really cool features.
Thanks for this list!

Wow, very good list! All programs here are very reliable, but as for antiviruses I prefer NOD32.
And for system registry cleaning I use RegCleaner, really fast, small and reliable with multilanguages.

Some of the best freeware programs (i.e. programs that you don't have to pay for AND programs that aren't "free trial" and DON'T eventually ask you to sign up for paid subscription (as a few of the aforementioned programs do) can be found here: http://www.techsupportalert.com/. Not to mention the amount of spam that you receive for the "free" programs listed.
About Tech Support Alert:

Notepad++ is a free (as in "free speech" and also as in "free beer") source code editor and Notepad replacement that supports several languages. It runs in the MS Windows environment.

You can go to Portableapps.com to download your soft you need.

Nice list there, lots of good stuff there.
Just a couple programs I noticed that I use that aren't on there:
Encryption and data security > Key Scrambler - Great program (or Firefox addon) which encrypts all keystrokes at the kernel level, so even if you have a keylogger, all the keylogger will pick are the encrypted keystrokes which can't be decoded.
HTML Editors > Notepad++
A very nice HTML (or pretty much any code, for that matter) editor with color coded syntax, as well as all those great extra features like regex mass replacements - kind of just like a super powered version of the regular Windows notepad.
jsfdan
Wow many thanks for this list. Although I already have some listed.
shenyl
Yes, I can see this has generated lots of interest and people are wanting to improve that list and contribute to the list.
But we are unable to update the initial list and contribute to it.
The various web sites some have pointed out are just like this - they gather all the freeware and categories them, some even allow voting, and some even guage the number of downloads.
One site that does all these and have very clean (little of no virus) is
I used the GDATA AnitVirenKit v2004 and v2005
I tested the software on different computers. On the most computers it wasn't working correctly (nothing to do with windows version). Maybe the floppy drive was working all the time, or if there was really a virus on the computer, windows didn't start again. But if the program works it's very nice but uses many system resources.
I also used F-Prot and NAV 2005, these two are not bad but they could cause some problems on some games. They also use many system resouces.
I tryed out some other Programs but they aren't interesting.
Now I'm using the AVG Free-Edition (www.grisoft.com). This one is working very good on every PC and for free. Also very good on some older PCs because it uses just 7 MBRam and has a fast scan but is finding nearly everything.
A tip to secure your PC: Download all the Security- Windows- Updates.
And if your PC is infected by a virus which can't be deleted by your Anti- Virus- Program just use Hijackthis. I get every system running again with this tool.
Realy nice thing when You are somewhere where You can't install anything and You have to edit an image. It realy can help a lot
jsfdan
If you want a free trial php IDE editor, go to phpDesigner. Not only does it code php, but it can recognize the syntax of (x)html, css, javascript, and more.

Something I like is nDroid. Good to fasten up your work. Take a look. all you need to know is that it's based on AHK.
lethaltriad
wow alot of nice free apps here, definately gonna give some of them a try
I use http://www.optikvervelabs.com/ Virtual Photographer, which is a nice plugin for photoshop, only about 500kb in size but really good for photo manipulation, brighten colours and increase saturation and contrast. Only drawback is that it only supports 8bit mode so you cant use it for your 16bitt TIFF files
For file extraction from zip, rar or anything other archive type extensions i use Peazip. Works just like winrar or winzip and of course its free =)
I also use Zone Alarm free home editiion version. I make my hardware firewall deal with everything else and use it for program control.
And for Antivirus protection I use Avast Home edition. All you have to do is create a license key once per year which is free to do. If I think of anymore I'll add to the list.
paulotlet
Really great, nice job, thanks a lot..
I'll give a little try and stop searching for cracks serials and key fot those captalists softwares

EASEUS Partition Manager Home Edition (PartitionMagic Alternative)
===============================================
I wondered when I found EASEUS Partition Manager 3.0 Home Edition Free Download (PartitionMagic Alternative). It worked like a charm. It is really an alternative to Partition Magic. Please read terms and conditions if you want to use for commercial purposes (as it is free for home users only, I think).
I used two times and it worked perfectly. It is not time consuming too.
Of course, it make partition of a single/C drive without loosing data within/using windows/window based GUI.
I bet you will gonna like them.

I'm recommending the Windows XP PowerToys, it has some useful and handy stuff. In particular, I like the Virtual Desktop Manager (multiple window screens like in Linux to some degree) and Tweak UI (more specific options to fully customize your computer). The Alt-Tab Replacement is good too. And also check out the other tools they have.

So did you try.
As I am using AVG Free and I guess it might not be as good as it was.
Therefore let me know me about your experience.

Since KMPlayer has been acquired by Pandora TV it just goes down the hill, primarly because there is rarely any bugfix and doesn't maintined to the newer codecs/standards.
I would rather say PotPlayer.
Its made by the original developer of KMPlayer, but it is still updated regularly.

I think you could add Microsoft Security Essentials to List Antivirus Freeware.
I don't know if this has mentioned, if so I did not see it, but you might want to either add LibreOffice or replace OpenOffice with it, since a lot of the developers and whatnot from OpenOffice went over to LibreOffice and it is completely usable. Since Apache is still maintaining OpenOffice it might be best just to add it to the list. great job though. I hope this list can be kept up to date. I am just trying to do my part.

A link to http://filehippo.com/ would also merit an inclusion in this list. As this contains links to most used and most updated free app links.

Notepad++ is a free source code editor and Notepad replacement that supports several languages. Running in the MS Windows environment, its use is governed by GPL Licence.
FastStone Image Viewer is a fast, stable, user-friendly image browser, converter and editor. It has a nice array of features that include image viewing, management, comparison, red-eye removal, emailing, resizing, cropping and color adjustments.
The software from xara ,for me is easy and cheap. Photoshop is very big and comlicated.

You should definitely add Soluto to that list. It's an application that helps monitor your PC. Not an anti-virus but an anti-stress. There's the free version for personal/individual use and then there is the paid version for IT guys. Check it out!
