US warns India over Iran stance
Washington has warned India a landmark deal giving it US nuclear technology may fall through if Delhi does not back a UN motion against Iran.
The deal could "die in Congress" if India does not vote against Iran at a meeting of the UN nuclear watchdog, US Ambassador David Mulford said.
The US is pursuing action against Iran over its apparent nuclear ambitions.
India says it rejects any attempt to tie its stance on Iran to its deal with the US on acquiring nuclear know-how.
'Test of credibility'
Washington agreed last year to share advanced civilian nuclear technology with Delhi, lifting sanctions triggered by India's nuclear tests in 1998.
The deal was struck by President George W Bush and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh but must be approved by the US Congress in order to be implemented.
US Ambassador to India David Mulford said the US is keen to have India's support when UN atomic watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, meets to discuss Iran.
"India has arrived on the world stage and is a very, very important player in the world," he told the Press Trust of India.
"And if it opposes Iran having nuclear weapons, we think they should record it in the vote."
India's failure to do so, he said, would have a "devastating" effect on US Congress members who have yet to approve the nuclear deal.
"I think the Congress will simply stop considering the matter. I think the initiative will die in the Congress - not because the US administration would want it to.
"This should be part of the calculations India will have to keep in mind."
Mr Mulford also said the US had doubts about Indian assurances on the clear separation of its civilian and military nuclear programmes - a key condition of the technology-sharing deal agreed last year.
Ideas set out by India did not meet the "test of credibility", Mr Mulford is quoted by the AFP news agency as saying.
Negotiations on the issue must be completed by the time President Bush visits the country in March, he said.
Iran sanctions threat
Responding to the US ambassador's remarks, Indian foreign ministry spokesman Navtej Sarna said his country's agreement with the US on "civil nuclear energy co-operation... stands on its own merits".
The stance Delhi adopts towards Iran before the UN nuclear watchdog would be determined by its "own independent judgement", Mr Sarna said.
The IAEA meets next week to discuss referring Iran to the Security Council for possible sanctions.
Several Western nations accuse Iran of seeking to build nuclear weapons. Tehran maintains its nuclear programme has a purely civilian purpose. |

Blair and just about every other politician are an ass anyways
India must ignour USA blackmailing. We are free to take decisions. USA is destroying west asian countries one by one. They still could not prove that Saddam was guilty. Their next pray is Iran. We must not allow them for it. We must be united against USA's evil will.
The US is the world hegemon; it is their job to blackmail everyone!
Who ever said the world was fair?

Well you know man everything has its price,
the price of if sent troops to iraq, BILLIONS OF $$$$, LOT OF EMPLOYMENT, CONTRACTS FOR INDIAN COMPANIES, US support for a permanent membership Security council, INTEL MANUFACTURING UNIT IN INDIA
you know our country would have been a lot and lot richer if we have send troops to iraq, and our lifes would have been a lot better
well there is a price to everything, now India is ready to pay the price.
well what u said is a matter of a great discussion. what would india get if India follow what u said ........
i think nothing
man, employment for person matters a lot then some pride.
This is why I intend to move to Ireland. The US surely is going to ****** with the wrong leader one day....
If you want the most powerful country in the world to stop pushing other countries around then you need to campaign for a system that will stop them doing so.
Currently inside our countries we practice various forms of democracy to try and prevent our poweful groups from pushing around the majority to the point where it hurts too much to bear (wherupon we chuck them out hopefully.)
However there is no democratic body with over sight and authority in relation to the USAs action so how is the will of the majority (the rest of the world, and quite a lot of US citizens) going to be expressed in relation to the USA's brute military dominance.
If Bush really wants to spread democracy, then he should spread it into international politics, with a strengthened democratised UN, an international court with teeth, and a world parliament for oversight and scrutiny. Also a global financial regulatory framework run on a democratic basis.

If for once you think that Bush cares about the American people then my oh my are you guys wrong. I am sure everyone has heard that the supposed plane that hit Pentagon was not actually a plane, then what the heck happened to all teh passengers of the 575???

One day, like all great nations, America will fall. However, it will not be due to any attacks or disruptions. If you call feeding half the planet, fighting world disease, and destroying dictators who breach human rights blatantly; “pushing around”, dandy. Push my lily white Irish asss around!
Pray that America never “brakes up”. They have lasted more than any other nation. They had a civil war that, in fact, reduced their population. More soldiers died, all American, than in all of the other wars America has fought since. Somehow, they rebuilt and moved on to rescue Europe twice in a couple decades from the powers it refused to deal with early on.
I think a lot of you here do not understand America. You have never understood freedom. Americans, for instance, work because they want to. American rarely worry about starving or having shelter.
If you want to call it black mail when your mom and dad wont get you a cake for your birthday unless you clean our the chicken coup, then fine. America is black mailing you all. BooHoo!!!!
Attack all you want cowards!!!!
We have so many corn feed mid-western six(6)foot (2 meters) tall, who have grown up shooting Shiite over 100yards (91.5 meters) away, who have grown up read for the day that our country is needed. Certainly, when I was young, we where all ready for the Russian to poor over the Baring Straights, but if you want to poor our of cargo containers and suitcases we are waiting.

I can assure you that if even ONE more attack like 9/11 happens on US soil, the world WILL be geographically different, but I don't think the changes will be in the western hemisphere.
All countries, but especially the USA, rally when attacked. Support for destroying any and all terrorists and/or countries supporting them in any way will sky-rocket.
Bottom line: if you think it was bad when the Pres of Iran said he was going to wipe Israel and the Anglo-Saxons (Americans and British) off the face of the earth, just wait 'til the the US says they're gonna wipe (Radical) Islam off the face of the earth, because we won't be bluffing or making idle threats, and we do have the means to do it quickly and decisively.

Great post, weeds, but the US hasn't lasted longer than any other. We're only 250ish years old. But as far as in recent times when one country could be the most powerful, (and show that power anywhere in the world), you're right. And it's a good thing it's the USA and not someplace like Germany or Iran or some others.

Actually America stands nothing in comparison of existence with India or even Iraq.
hmmm i think USA it's making a big mistake with this war... it would be less expensive to give the terrorists what they want... because they don't attack without a good reason... and they should let the innocent lifes stay home and enjoy life...
And anyway... if we don't end war, war will end us... and one day... we will fight with rocks... in stead of rockets... come on people grow up... if USA is powerfull that doesn't mean that it should destroy the planet... so she can prove it...
Well one day we all gonna die... it's just that... USA it's accelerating this thing...

<sarcasm> Yeh, I know, with all the medical and agricultural technology propagated in the US. Our life expectancies are getting shorter by the day. </sarcasm>
I'm from Holland. We're one of the three countries that supported the US in this whole thing because for a while we really thought the US had the best intentions regarding the middle east. Could we have been more wrong?
NO.
All it took was just one remark from one of our politicians on human rights and the US started threatening the Netherlands with economical sanctions. If we would have the guts not to join 'em in the next mission to Afghanistan well, we would find out.
So, that's how the US treats it's allies. The one thing they forgot is that the dutch are THE no. 1 investor in the US and that we were in business before the US even existed.
Now don't think the Dutch are the only ones withdrawing their investments in the US due to America's unbelievably undiplomatic and rude behaviour. Soon the Chinese won't be so willing to lend money to the US and already the dollar has dropped one third in value. In the meantime oilprices are going trough the roof. Expensive oil means expensive wars; to fund those, you need money. Money for which the US is dependant on the rest of the world. The only question that matters is, how long the world will be willing to fund their own schoolyard bully.
My prediction? Well, not too long.
Yes, well, what would YOU do if you had countries developing nuclear weapons that could end up being fired at you. You would hold blackmail over them.

Sometimes it takes an instigator, one who is not willing to sit back and roll over, one who is TRYING HARD for peace and democracy, but nobody will listen. Of course it's going to piss the United States off. What do we do when anywhere else in the world is in trouble? We rush to their aid with billions and billions of dollars. What do they do? They screw us over and say "F**K OFF"

man nuclear weapons are just an excuse. they did all that In Iraq where no weapons of mass destruction were found, it was just a consiparicy. man, just tell me in the history of the planet, which country used the nukes ? its only america, so i think nukes are unsafe in the hands of USA rather than nay other country, afterall only usa used them in the history.

it's really simple. the biggest and strongest kid in the playground gets whatever he wants. It just depends what means he is willing to use. if he likes you, he will make a deal with you in exchange for something. if he doesn't like you that much but doesn't want to kick your ass he will "encourage" you through threats. and if he hates you, guess whose ass is getting kicked.
The thing is though, there is always another kid waiting in the wings to be the new big guy. And when he takes out this first guy it's never pretty!! All i can say is, U.S., watch out for the other kids in the playground who are getting bigger. Coz very soon they won't take being pushed around. In fact, the tables might turn.

I am afraid that the US is more like the supervisor that keeps all the kids in line. Often the children whine and cry because they don' t understand that the US.... I mean the supervisors know what is best.
Yes, look at Rome. It still, in the opinion of many, stands. |
US is not allowed to be superviser. US government is selected by US citizens, not by the world. If you will allow the world to vote for USA government, then situation will be different. |
Exactly, be absorbed!!!!
Then enstead of starving to death you can die of heart diseas from eating to much!!!! |
But it will prevent USA citizens from die from eating too much. Not bad idea.

I am afraid the only thing that will keep US citizens, or any humans unders such a fine and privalaged union, is to end the world all together. You must have never had a Big Mack, or a BUCKET of fried chicken....all with fried popatose, and a diet coke.

Call it supervisor, bully, whatever, it still essentially comes down to the same thing: Who has the power to influence others and get what they want. And as for the US knowing best, the rest of the world certainly doesn't think so. Actually they think they the U.S. has lost its mind and is going down a perilous path.
Regarding Rome, i was referring to the Empire, not the city, which, you are correct, does indeed still stand. Very nicely, i might add

By supervisor, I mean one who is not after it's own means, but that of the children, very different from the bully.
By Rome, I mean that current society eminates Rome, the empire. As if it never fell but more declined and evolved.
But that's the thing though, the U.S., like any other country, is primarily driven by its own personal intrests not that of other countries. But if some other good comes out of its actions, then hey that's pretty cool too.
The only entity that could be referred to as a "supervisor" is the U.N. But its also largely influenced by the U.S. . but its mandate is to help the world, it's kids, achieve world peace.

The UN is far too complacent and slow to act as a supervisor. World peace is a difficult goal. There are those willing to harm to achieve, aggressors. I think the best we can achieve, with the hindrance of human nature, is an entity such as the US counteracting the aggressors. Of course, to deal with the aggressors you must be proactive, which looks aggressinve…..
