SGSN - Serving Gateway Support Node
works in similar fashion for GPRS Networks as MSC for GSM.
This discussion covers Air Interface~SGSN communication only not beyond that..
SGSN being the most important equipment is the first equipment where subscriber enters for using service. Air interface directly connected to BTS and then to SGSN. BTS has special unit for Packet Data called PCU [Packet Control Unit]
PCU is responsible for collecting and routing packet data to SGSN.

GGSN: A gateway to Packet Data.
This conversation will discuss communication between SGSN -> GGSN Only
Attach process is completed at SGSN, when SGSN communicates with HLR and authenticates subscriber for the service.
When an IP address is assigned to the subscriber, PDP Context activates on the Mobile Station. The Gateway GPRS Support Node supports the edge routing function of GPRS Network. It also acts as IP Router for external network. Interfaced with Charging gateway and also DHCP, firewalls and other important equipments.
