Will site downtime effect pageranking in search results?

Dragonfly
I would like to hear opinion from experts if a website downtime effects the same site page-ranking in search engines like google, yahoo, msn, aol, askjeeves, altavista and others?

When the site goes down I know many people cannot reach it and the sites that appear in the same page of the search result will get click, will that bring the search results below my site above mine in the pageranking when the same keyword is searched after sometime or some hours or even some days?

If so, website uptime will play a very important role in it. Please comment.

I've read alot about SEO, and I've never come across anything about downtime contributing to lower rankings in SERP's. Although, if a Search Engine happens to index your site during downtime (which is highly unlikely), I suppose it could push you down a few ranks.

It's not really something to worry too much about, though.

Unless the downtime is very long, I mean a week or longer (and even then), there shouldn't be a problem. However, there might be a problem when your domain expires.
