Study: Men Enjoy Seeing Bad People Suffer

NEW YORK - Bill Clinton said he felt others' pain. But a new brain-scanning study suggests that when guys see a cheater get a mild electric shock, they don't feel his pain much at all. In fact, they rather enjoy it.

In contrast, women's brains showed they do empathize with the cheater's pain and don't get a kick out it.

It's not clear whether this difference in schadenfreude _ enjoyment of another's misfortune _ results from basic biology or sex roles learned during life, researchers say. But it could help explain why men have historically taken charge of punishing criminals and others who violate societal rules, said researcher Dr. Klaas Stephan.

Stephan, a senior research fellow at the University College London, is co-author of a study led by Tania Singer at the college and published online Wednesday by the journal Nature.

Singer, in an e-mail message, said the sex difference in results was a surprise and must be confirmed by larger studies. The researchers said women might have reacted like men if the cheater suffered psychological or financial pain instead.

So they have to redo the study because they only did this with a very small population (16 of each sex)... but... could this be why there are so many wars with men in power? Wink
Women, apparently, with punish them the way they should be - you cheat in a game of poker for money, you pay with money. Women are against violence. Surprise? Not really.
I personally love watching horror and action movies, and I'm a woman. I hate chick flicks. But it's true that there are better ways to pay for wrong doings other than beating physically hurt. heh

It gets worse.

I suspect that some men SO enjoy watching bad people suffer, that they're willing to bend over backwards looking for some excuse to label someone bad so they could enjoy the suffering.

So this explains why there are so many pricks out there that can't watch a disaster or an innocent civilian war-casualty without smugly saying "They brought it upon themselves".

ewwwwwwwww

Anyone that smiles at children being hurt and says they brought it in has serious mental issues.

I don't know anyone that would say that. I'm glad I don't live in a country where I would know someone to say that :-S[/quote]

Um, hello! The study didn't mention innocents! It said quite clearly that when a guilty party was subjected to physical punishment, the men watching were happy (satisfied that justice was done), whereas women preferred financial (irrelevant to a rapist) or psychological (cruel) punishment.

Which raises the question - should women be on the bench? A female judge is more likely to make an emotional judgement than a male judge.

I know. I was adding my own interpretation, based on personal observations. I definitely see a tendency in myself and other men toward an irrational sort of blood-thirstiness that goes far beyond the desire for justice. Now this study might finally be shedding some light on it.

I've observed that we find the idea of someone getting away with something so irritating, that some of us would rather see the wrong person punished than nobody punished at all. We're punishment addicts. If I was a psychologist, I would design a followup study where the participants were given that very choice, to see what they would choose.

Well, men are as irrational as women. It's just that our irrationality trends toward anger and revenge, while their trends toward compassion. Too much of either would screw up a justice system.

I think there should be a balance of female and male judges so we don't go off the deep end in either direction. A balance that happens naturally if candidates are fairly evaluated according to their qualifications for the job.

Heh.

I think people in general enjoy the feeling of accomplishment and empowerment. Unfortunately, sometimes in order to accomplish your goals, you have to enter into conflict with others, and prevail against them. But not as often as people seem to think.

Men, more often than women, make the logical error of assuming that just because sometimes you need to prevail in conflict to acchieve your goals that seeking out conflict will by itself acchieve your goals. Which is utterly untrue... in most cases conflict and violence are a waste of energy and resources.

I think that a healthy view of conflict, force, violence, etc. is as a distasteful but sometimes necessary burden. Do it, get it over with decisively and quickly, so that you don't have to do it again for a long, long time.

Never entrust power to someone who thinks there is some kind of nobility or glory in warfare. People like that are the ones who pick fights and escalate existing ones unnecessarily.

But isn't it the best bit of the film when the bad guy finally gets their comeuppance? Makes me smile! Wink

Eating tubs of butterscotch ice cream all day will make me smile. And will also eventually make me diabetic.

Not everything that feels good is necesserily in our own long term interests.

Vengeance and victory feel good. Draw your own conclusions.

Don't get me wrong, I like a final showdown in a movie as much as the next guy. I didn't say I'm immune to these drives... just that I try to analyze them in myself and others, and keep my judgement on important matters as clear-headed as possible.

Here's a way to test my theory that men enjoy not just seeing bad people suffer, but that they enjoy seeing someone get punished when a wrongdoing is committed, whether it's the right person or not.

Do a poll on what people think of post-conviction DNA reviews and the work being done by the Innocence Project.

You would think that there would be no rational reasons to opposed a group that's trying to make sure that innocent people haven't been wrongly convicted. Yet I bet you that in such a poll, the majority of people who are against it will turn out to be men.
