More Domain Help Needed

tribe
Now I bothered all you last week but this week is totally different.
I wanted to create a main page for my site, Tribe Talk. So I designed: http://eguins.frihost.net

This is what I need. My message boards are currently at: www.tribe-talk.com
Is it possible for Bondings or any of you to tell me; or in Bondings case do this... Make www.tribe-talk.com--->http://eguins.frihost.net but keep my forums at: http://www.tribe-talk.com/index.php ???

If that doesn't make since I am sorry. For example: www.southsiders.net See there domain goes to that main page but if you click forums it goes to: www.southsiders.net/index.php

That is what I want.

Also. is there a way to make all my files tribe-talk.com/directory?
Again I am sorry if this is confusing. But if Bondings can do this that be great!

Why do you want to do that?

Anyways, here it goes...

* You could make http://www.tribe-talk.com to point to http://eguins.frihost.net by adding tribe-talk.com as a domain in your account (by using it as an alias) and by changing the domain's nameservers to Frihost's nameservers.

* However, after doing that, when you access tribe-talk.com, you would always end up seeing the contents of eguins.frihost.net. You cannot access your forums via tribe-talk.com anymore,

* The best thing that you can do is to make a subdomain like forums.tribe-talk.com then point to wherever your forums is being kept.

And oh, by the way, index.php, index.html, index.htm, etc. are the files that are actually being accessed if you try to browse a "directory". If there is not index file in a directory, a directory listing will be generated by the web server (if not changed).

For example, you go to http://www.southsiders.net, you actually access http://www.southsiders.net/index.php. BTW, you can have multiple index files like index.php, index.htm, index.html, etc. but the webserver would only "load" one. That is, in the order of precedence.

I am not aware of all the possible solutions to your problem but I hope that I've made some point here.

Hope that helps.. Smile

You will need to do that with mod_rewrite, I think. Redirect internally the requests to your subdomain.

I would just move that splash page into the forum directory Wink
That will make you domain go to the splash page and the forum be indx.php
Your website though wouldnt use the full domain unless like bondings said you used mod rewrite OR you created a folder called home in your forum folder and added your site there though moving mambo now could be difficult?

You htaccess would look something like this
It may not work though as mambo already uses mod rewrite it seems
Code:
RewriteEngine on
Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^\.htaccess$ - [F]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} ^EmailSiphon
RewriteRule ^.*$ - [F]
RewriteRule ^home/(.*)$ http://eguins.frihost.net/home/$1
RewriteRule ^home/(.*)/(.*)$ http://eguins.frihost.net/home/$1/$2
RewriteRule ^home/(.*)/(.*)/(.*)$ http://eguins.frihost.net/home/$1/$2/$3
RewriteRule ^home/(.*)/(.*)/(.*)/(.*)$ http://eguins.frihost.net/home/$1/$2/$3/$4

djclue917 you helped thanks.....

This is one hell of a task ain't it... So I can have www.tribe-talk.com become www.eguins.frihost.net

---but---

I can't have my forums under Tribe-Talk.com now?

Now is it possible to access my forums from www.tribe-talk.com/tribe?????
If so how?

Well... Not really become... But www.tribe-talk.com will point to where your current frihost subdomain points to. -> 2 domains pointing to the same location. That's actually bad in Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

I think you should just follow Bondings' and mathiaus' posts... Research on that mod_rewrite thingy. Smile

I am not really an expert with these things although I do know the basics and some complex and important stuffs. Very Happy

Okay, set your forums to www.tribetalk.com/tribe or forums or whatever and set a domain pointer (if you already havent) with your domain. Now change the index.html to your actual homepage.

Bondings I tried and tried but I just can't figure out this cpanel.

I have come to a conclusion to what I want.
Main Site: www.tribe-talk.com which is right now at: http://www.eguins.frihost.net

Forums:
forums.tribe-talk.com which is right now at: http://www.eguins.frihost.net/tribe and tribe-talk.com

Home: (Mambo) home.tribe-talk.com which is right now at: http://www.eguins.frihost.net/home/

Bondings if you could do that, that be great. I mean I tried and tried with what you all said but I get errors and screw ups on cpanel.

And can it be so that forums.tribe-talk.com stays like that in every link and same with home?

Thanks!

I wish everyone wrote easy to understand summaries of what they want Wink

Anyway, step-by-step:

  1. REMOVE the domain as it is at the moment
  2. Add the 'tribe-talk.com' domain as a Parked Domain
  3. Add 'forums' and 'home' as subdomains to that domain
  4. Login to the forum and change the forum URL field so it looks like http://forums.tribe-talk.com/
  5. Rename the 'tribe' directory to 'forums'

It should now work. Be sure to login to the forum first, change the URL and THEN rename the folder.

Also, you'll need to log in to your Mambo, and change the URL to the new one. If you can't find the setting, go into the database (cPanel --> MySQL Databases --> phpMyAdmin --> choose the database) and use the 'Search' feature to search for the old setting. Click the edit button and change all the results to the new URL.

Thanks: daniel15

Everything works great.. Where do I go now for Mambo? I can't find it.. So I guess I need to edit some mod?
Daniel15
Like you said before, your Mambo installation is at http://home.tribe-talk.com/ . You'll need to log in to the Mambo admin panel, and change the URL to 'http://home.tribe-talk.com/ ', as it will still be set to your old URL.
tribe
I can't find the setting. Can one of you help me find it? That is the mambo setting for the links.

Thanks if so.
