The UK Government is to continue with plans to introduce identity cards despite a defeat in the House of Lords.
The Lords voted 237 to 156 to block the scheme until a clearer picture of the costs is given.
What do people feel about ID cards. Haven't we got enough ID already with passports and driving licenses providing pictures and identification of individuals.
Is this yet another Government scheme to increase their knowledge of everything about you that will cost millions of pounds to implement?
Will it really the stop terroists? We have already seen that the London bombers were so called British. Bet they wouldn't have had a problem getting their new ID cards.
So what's it really all about? Big Brother tracking our every move?
They're trying to do the same thing in Australia. Because the dickheads in power (Liberal-National coalition) have control of both houses, it's just about done and dusted.
I don't like the idea...the government can keep their dirty paws off my details. When they need them, I'll give it to them, not before.
Howard can bugger off with his idea for an ID card...
I think it is an excellent idea in someways it just depends what they want and why they want it.
for instance finger prints and DNA. I can understand to help fight Crime and so on.
But there is other things that people dont want to be disclosed to other people.
And who says, who will have the right to look at the details.
I think something like this is inevitable anyway in the UK and i don't really think it would be so bad. The cards may cost a bit (~£100 each?) but in the long run the benefits should be worth a lot more than that.
i always wondered if you can prevent someone using a fake passport to get an id card.
If you had fake id then does that mean you could walk up to the registraton point with your fake passport and actually get a "real" id backed up by YOUR biometric data.
Just a thought.

So few people, including yourself, use that reference correctly.
Since you brits don't have a principle safeguarding laws respecting your immutable rights you might want to find a paddle before the stream consumes you.
Well, it sounds to me that the UK is leaning a bit toward's America's Patriot Act.
But we won't go into that, the liberals will get me!
Anyways, I find it interesting that in our small town school we just got ID cards that are required to go anywhere within the building. Not as large scale as a country, but it's still happening.
Sounds like a waste of money to me.
I don't like the idea.
It's just like in those sci-fi future movies when the government has complete control over everybody.
What are you meant to do when the government starts to dictating like Nazi Germany and the USSR did. The people maneged to defeat the USSR, then, but next time maybe they wont be able to defeat them.
And when Germany started to dictate the "Free World" rose up against them but after all the big controlling countries like the US, UK and Australia (the countries likely to introduce the cards!!!) have complete control over the people the wont need to pretend they care because there will be no way to vote them out of Parliament.
They will have complete control!
Thanks for your replys so far.
Latest news is:
The Government has been defeated in the House of Lords over plans to make identity cards compulsory.
The Lords backed a move to keep the proposed system on a voluntary basis.
Peers voted 186 to 142 - a majority of 44 - during the Identity Cards Bill's report stage.
Hooray! for once to the House of Lords - thats what you are there for.
Thank god!
That's wonderful news - we will survive!
....which means it'll be another year before they can bypass the Lords using the Parliament Act - Then we'll get i.d. cards anyway.
Just as long as it doesn't replace legal tender. I'd hate having to use an ID card to make transactions. Privacy, ethical and security issues.
ID cards, Driver's licenses (with fingerprints and photos) and the new style passports are all ways to gather information and control the general population. So is gun control, etc.
Despite such measures to 'protect' people; syndicates, gangs and the various mafias (Italian, Russian, Jewish) always find ways around these little inconveniences.
It's also interesting to see that in almost every country where such measures are implemented, it is usually the liberal 'people' parties that are implementing these measures, while at the same time, they are destabilising their countries and contributing to the increase in lawlessness and crime.
It kind of reminds you of the Communists, with their "People's Republic"s, yet they committed the greatest atrocities of our time - even worse than anything Hitler ever did.
Slowly but surely, all freedoms are being eroded worldwide. This may seem like a negative view, but take a good look at what is really happening.

Here here!!
The real ganges, mafias have no problem getting around things like passports, gun laws etc. But it gives the government more control over the people.
They're going to take over the world!
