Alleged hacker faces extradition to U.S.
By Dan Ilett

A British man suspected of hacking into 53 U.S. government computers is facing extradition.

Gary McKinnon, 39, an unemployed man from north London, was arrested Tuesday night.

McKinnon, known as "Solo" in the hacking world, was set to appear Wednesday before the Bow Street Magistrates Court on an extradition warrant from the U.S. government.

According to the warrant, McKinnon gained illegal access and made unauthorized modifications to 53 computers belonging to the U.S. government, including computers from the Department of Defense and the National Security Agency, between February 2001 and March 2002.

If extradited and found guilty in the United States, he faces five years in prison for eight crimes he was indicted for in 2002. Among the charges, McKinnon is suspected of stealing administrator identities, deleting 1,300 user accounts and copying a file containing usernames and encrypted passwords.

Apparently this guy claims to have found evidence that the US government has access to anti-gravity technology.

Of course he didn't keep any of this evidence Rolling Eyes

His claim was that he was trawling the US government computers for records on the existence of UFOs and aliens, which he was quite obsessed about at the time.

What worries me the most is how he describes the laxity of the computer security in many of these government networks though.

One network, of over 100 computers I believe, all had local administration passwords as blank. Shocked

He also states seeing many other different 'hackers' in the system with ips from many different countries. I hope that these were out of country agents, but it still is kinda worrying that if this guy can get in... who else has access to the information on those systems?

I doubt the most important information in pentagon will be stored in networked machines.

For anybody interested, the publically available indictment can be found at http://news.findlaw.com/hdocs/docs/cyberlaw/usmck1102vaind.pdf (pdf file)

After eight years in prison he will get a good job in Norton or Microsoft and will earn a lot of many like most of the good hackers.

This isn't so shocking to me. The people who know most about computer/network security are mainly hackers. This is why these problems will always exist. For every new firewall/AntiVirus/whatever, there will always be someone who can get around it. But, not necessarily without being caught. Wink

Yes but the reason he did it was to show how easy it is to get into them, if he was able to get in to that many i am woried about them knowing anything about anyone.

Honeypots are supposed to be easy to get into.

...and why put boring administrative and financial documents on your honeypot when you can put something mysterious and exciting on there that no X-files fan can resist?

I find most hacking is stupid and for no good purpose other than mischief and because you can. When is hacking worthwhile and good other than testing your own site for security holes?
