Ohio High School Porn Homework Canceled

Quote:
BROOKLYN, Ohio - A high school research assignment on Internet pornography was canceled after parents in this Cleveland suburb complained.

Superintendent Jeff Lampert said that although the teacher's apparent goal _ to discuss the harmful effects of pornography _ was well-intentioned, he agreed with parents that the assignment was inappropriate for 14- and 15-year-old freshmen at Brooklyn High.

The assignment asked students to research pornography on the Internet and list eight facts about pornography. Students also were asked to write their personal views of pornography and any experience they had with it.

Lampert said he doubted the teacher, Scott Gioia, would face any punishment. Gioia teaches health and physical education and has been at the school for about five years.

Lampert said he started getting calls Wednesday and met with the principal and Gioia. They decided that day to drop the project.

"We value the partnership we have" with the community, Lampert said. "We take that very seriously."

There was no phone listing under Gioia's name in the Cleveland area.

Last fall, controversy over questionable work-study credits given to a member of the football team led the team to forfeit four wins _ the team's only victories of the season and the first in two years.

Insanity
I suppose there are ways to research pornography without actually looking at it...
TheFaction
its a health class...in high school. its not like it was middle school where i would admit its still kinda young but high schoolers should be mature enough to handle such content. but obviously it appears that the parents are too worried that their kids will be corrupted by simply doing "research". everyones open to their interpretation of that.

Interesting way of doing things Shocked

The teacher should've had a long hard think about doing this assignment before assigning it to the kids!

Yeah, I agree with bigdan, what kind of a teacher assigns a child pornography assignments and doesn't even think there will be controversy. The nasty part was when he asked for the kids experiences with pornography.... can you "pedophil?"

Exactly.

Who knows if the teacher concerned has sexual tendencies concerning 14-15 year old teenage boys? Shocked

If you're going to show pictures of naked people, take them out of the text book, not the porno mag. Cool

Interesting story. When I was at school we also had a health and personal hygeine class, and even a 'civics' class to teach us about politics, civil responsibility, etc.

Our health class included personal hygeine and 'reproduction'. In the modern world when people are becoming sexually active at a younger age, proper methods of instruction could actually prevent teen pregnancies and the spread of AIDS. Of course, there will always be those who go ahead anyway.

When I was in 7th grade we had a girl in our class who was expelled for drinking alcohol at school (mixed with orange juice). She and at least 2 other girls were also sexually active, and they were about 12 or 13 years old. By 9th grade you will find that 20% of the students are active sexually.

Perhaps these students were not ready for this assignment, or maybe it's their parents who were not ready! If the parents assisted their kids with their homework, they could point out the pitfalls of porn, and negative the implications, including the financial ones. Not only that, but they could research scientific studies and white papers, rather than actually subscribing to, or viewing porn online.

It's all in the approach I guess. You can't afford to be an overzealous prude, religious fanatic, or bury your head in the sand - that's exactly when the smelly stuff hits the fan! What I can say though, is that too many parents leave their kids education to the schools, colleges and educators, rather than deal with it themselves, and the sad results can be seen everywhere.

lol how did the teacher not realise parents would complain. Also seems weird considering the legal age for looking at porn is like 18 or 21.
srdjan
what i think is that this teacher just got bored of all his "usual internet hangouts" and needed some refreshment in his collection...and this way he oughta get a loooootta refreshment, you know what i'm saying?
but, yeah the legal age...a rookie mistake!
anybody thought of that? Twisted Evil

Since when has the law stopped people? People break it everyday! I highly doubt many teens abide by this.

And if it's a health class, there most likely is sex ed. Porn is just a way to see it in action, if you will. It's not like anything is going on that they wouldn't know about, people learn it in as young as 4th grade now.

At our school, AIDS is introduced in 3rd grade with sex ed. courses in 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th, and 9th grades.

It's not like the teacher was telling the kids "go home and look up all the porn you can on the computer kids, that's your assignment."

Although it's controversial, it might be beneficial. I would rather have my kid (when I have one) learn about it before stumbling upon it on the internet.

It really isn't a big deal, in year 9 last year we did an assignment on pornography in health and personal developement - and this is to a class of 14/15 year old girls.

To be honest, I think even most girls my age have been exposed to pornography in one way or another, if not alot in one way or another...
westsida
i think porn can be a extension of sex ed..
notaznatall
Hmmm...is that "Homework" on the school curriculum or did the teacher just tell them to that because it seems to me the "Students didnt mind'?
photon
haha teaching the effects of porn by giving an internet assignment on it!! what was the teacher thinking?? what would the children do?? visit all porn sites and make their assignments colorful with pics and videos?? Shocked

Too bad sex "ed" doesn't bother mentioning HPV. You know, the STD that condoms do ZIPPO, ZILCH, NOTHING, to prevent. That STD present in 99% of all cervical cancer patients. The STD that increases the likelyhood of cervical cancer by 70%. The STD that increases the likelihood of prostate cancer.

Why doesn't sex "Ed" mention the thirty something STDs most of which condoms don't prevent? "Safe"?? Safer than what?

If I need to provide more graphic details to demonstrate the ineffectivity of condoms I will.

If porn is educational what would be wrong with encouraging teens to watch other teens they know have sex? Why not make throwing away your virginity extra credit? Who really gives a damn about the happiness of another's future spouse anyway!

I don't know what shti system you've been through - but I've well and truly been taught the lot. (And I'm 14, in year 10, just starting VCE).
And I don't think wether or not schools educate students about porn or not is going to change the number of sweaty teen-age boys that look it up.
And, I mean, what's in sex ed is centred around the fact that there IS more to sex than porn, and that it's generally targeted at men on the basis that men are visualy stimulated. And that the average man does not expect or nessecarily aim to get a woman of the "standard" printed on the pages of playboy.
The women there are purely sexual objects, not somehting the average man would attach to emotionally... etcetera, etcera.
