President George W. Bush has signed executive orders giving him sole authority to impose martial law, suspend habeas corpus and ignore the Posse Comitatus Act that prohibits deployment of U.S. troops on American streets. This would give him absolute dictatorial power over the government with no checks and balances.


I've seen Doug go off on some tangents before, and I found little to report about this being true, but IF it is, there'll be hell to pay.

The guy's a dictator after all Twisted Evil, lol Razz. Signing it ok, but now if he would actually go about (ab)using it I can see so many people coming up with "told you so!" Razz.

If you take it in that context, yeah, but I don't think the other two branches will let him go all tyrannical for too long, they have to be able to stop him somehow.

They can. They can impeach him as a first step. I can't see that really being an issue, unless he used the military to prevent congress from meeting. Otherwise it would be the fastest ticket out of the white house I can think of.

I don't think he will, if he indeed does have that power. I'm concerned about future presidents, though.

If he manages to call martial law there's no guarantee there will be any other president ever anyway, so don't worry about that possibility

Why all this, especially right now? Had this happened earlier (i.e. right after Katrina since it talks about that) and has just been posted recently?

Decisions of such importance are made after putting in a lot of thought, so even if these people are wrong in your opinion, they must have some reason for allowing this to go through.
