Have you built GreaseMonkey scripts for FireFox

Check out the details about GreaseMonkey if you have not used it yet.

Its really cool. Allows one to build useful plugin type scripts that add functionality to the webpages you browse. There are already a large number of user created scripts available and I am sure there are more to come.

If you have built GreaseMonkey scripts yourself, share your experiences.

Yeah I've written some greasemonkey scripts for things like del.icio.us and stumbleupon. Almost all the gm scripts I've downloaded I hack for my own use and also to learn javascript techniques.

I'd say it's a good place to start learning javascript if you eventually want to learn how to make extensions and also if you're not heavily envolved in running a website. I owe greasemonkey a lot since both of those apply to me (I haven't run a site and haven't made an extension yet), otherwise I'd probably never really get a chance to learn javascript.

So far I've done navigation scripts, scripts for editting HTML in textboxes, and for cleaning up and reformatting sites that just plain look aweful (del.icio.us *cough*) LOL. Lots of fun and mischief Laughing Seems like some site-owners aren't too crazy about it though.

I think there is some way to conver greasemonkey scripts to extensions. Does anybody know how to do this?

http://www.letitblog.com/greasemonkey-compiler/ will do it. But really, what advantage does that have?

I suppose that greasemonkey compiler is good if you want to distribute scripts to people without greasemonkey. And maybe if you haven't written an extension before, it can be used to seed an extension so you can continue to implement code with higher privelidges.

But if it's just for the sake of having a script in extension form, then it's pointless. You're making something that's supposed to be light, flexible, and hackable into something that isn't... Greasemonkey script were intended to be this way to eliminate the hassles of making extensions -- and also because websites can so easily and frequency break these scripts, ends users want to easily tweak and hack them, no zips, no xpis, no jars, no fuss.

Check out Platypus.

It allows you to visually (WYSIWYG) delete elements from and alter webpages and then save them as user scripts to be installed into Greasemonkey. Very easy.
