One-Eyed Cat Had Medical Condition

PORTLAND, Ore. - A photo of a one-eyed kitten named Cy drew more than a little skepticism when it turned up on various Web sites, but medical authorities have a name for the bizarre condition.

"Holoprosencephaly" causes facial deformities, according to the National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke, part of the National Institutes of Health. In the worst cases, a single eye is located where the nose should be, according to the institute's Web site.

Traci Allen says the kitten she named Cy, short for Cyclops, was born the night of Dec. 28 with the single eye and no nose.

"You don't expect to see something like that," the 35-year-old Allen said by telephone from her home in Redmond in central Oregon.

Allen said she stayed up all night with the deformed kitten on her recliner, feeding Cy a liquid formula through a syringe. She says she cared for the kitten the next day as well, until it died that evening.

Allen had taken digital pictures that she provided to The Associated Press. Some bloggers have questioned the authenticity of the photo distributed on Jan. 6.

AP regional photo editor Tom Stathis said he took extensive steps to confirm the one-eyed cat was not a hoax. Stathis had Allen ship him the memory card that was in her camera. On the card were a number of pictures _ including holiday snapshots, and four pictures of a one-eyed kitten. The kitten pictures showed the animal from different perspectives.

Fabricating those images in sequence and in the camera's original picture format, from the varying perspectives, would have been virtually impossible, Stathis said.

Meanwhile, Cy the one-eyed cat may be dead, but it has not left the building.

Allen said she's keeping the cat's corpse in her freezer for now, in case scientists would like it for research.

She said one thing's for certain: "I'm not going to put it on eBay."

I don't have any comment for this one, I just think that it is a sin that it died.

Glennesau, I bet there are a lot of people wanting to buy things like this on ebay Wink. You know there are even museums in which deformed human corpses are displayed? Mainly those of young childeren or childeren which weren't even born yet, for the reason of these deformed not being able to survive (long).

But well yeh, with humans these days you see things like these less and less since it would just result in an abortion, but there are a lot of strange things which even lead to certain myths and all.

In example mermaids, which are basically nothing more than a fairy tale to most people, do exist in some way. There is a medical condition in which a kid gets born with both legs attached to eachother and has no feet like you would expect, instead the feet are attached to eachother as well, in the "best" case looking a damn lot like a fin.

As far as I know only 1 person has managed to get operated on this condition and has grown to reach the age of 15+, don't know if she's still alive or not.

There are also cases of tumors which grow inside people's bodies. Now nothing surprisingly here yet Wink. But in these rare occasions it isn't just a tumor but the tumor has hair growing on it, even limbs and teeth in some occasions. It is like getting a twin brother being born inside of you.

But it can go even worse, what about actually having your twin brother inside of you? Yes, even that is possible Razz.

In Amsterdam I know of one of these "freak show" museums, it was created over a 100 years ago already. These days I bet it's illegal to create something like that here, but well yeh, it is nice to visit and see things like this on humans. It shows how nature can make the most horrible errors.

On a sidenote, if you think seeing something like this is already weird then you should do some further research into it and find the most weird genes involved in this process, like the "sonic the hedgehog gene", rofl Razz. Scientists these days are just too bored Wink.
