Not humor, but a play-by-forum game.

There's no separate forum for games, so I'll start my post-by-forum game here.

Rules:

1. Read this http://hcs.harvard.edu/~dev/jedicops/wiki.cgi?The_Karmic_Cycle and maybe look around the rest of their website to see how they do it.

2. Type in a character name and description in a separate post. Character profiles are in blue.

3. See my post below which sets the scene. I'm the GM, I do that sort of stuff. If something happens in the game, you can't just contradict it and act like it isn't there... but you can modify it.

4. The GM (me) can disagree with you, and specify a number of karma points. If you let the GM have his way, you get that number of karma points. If you get your way, you give the GM karma points.

5. You can spontaneously cause trouble for yourself and the GM may give you some karma if you come up with something plausible, truly troublesome for you and your party, and preferrably tied in to something in your character profile.

6. Karma points can be pooled, lent, and traded between players.

7. Just because you paid your karma point to dodge a bullet or escape a burning building doesn't mean it happens automatically... you have to storytell it.

8. You can add to the description of the world around you if it doesn't contradict anything established earlier. If the GM objects they could charge you karma for it. Place descriptions are in bold

9. When you or the GM speak out of character, use italics

10. When you speak in character, type the character's name, followed by a colon (Smile and then what the character says. If you want the character to do something, you just say that they do it in third person.

11. Everyone has 25 karma points to start.

The characters are on a wide open elevated balcony, with waves lapping at the jagged rocks far below. Wrought-iron tables and chairs are standing around the balcony and some muzak is playing over the PA system. The sun has just set, once again making visible the epic battle taking place above the planet's atmosphere for the third day now. The flashes of battlecruisers burning up on reentry are more frequent now... the Polity forces don't seem to be doing so well anymore.

Deborah Clark is a very short woman of average build. She is in her late thirties, with black skin, brown eyes, and black hair.

Deborah is cautious, responsible, traditional, and dedicated to preserving order. She is quick to express strong emotions-- positive and negative-- but just as quick to get over them. She sees the world in terms of moral absolutes, yet she doesn't like conflict or causing harm to others.

She is a competent leader and a hard-working but fun colleague. She doesn't think very logically-- rather it's a pseudologic that's coming from an emotional place. Clark takes joy in holidays and rituals, epsecially where they involve group celebrations, entertainment, and gifts.

Until a few weeks ago, Deborah was an Asker as the Hall of Voices on this world. Then, as the siege began and the local economy more or less ground to a standstill, people stopped showing up for work. For a few days Deborah came in and sat alone at her station in the cavernous Hall. Then she gave up and went to where the people were, which is this place. In some sort of forlorn hope that somebody here might need her services, she still carries her Litrix, clutching it to her bosom like it's a priceless trinket... which, given how things are unfolding, it might very well be.

Deborah walks up to the crowded bar and patiently waits for the bartender to notice her. He doesn't. Bartenders often fail to notice her, and the fact that she's barely visible over the top of the bar doesn't help matters.

I would be very interested in participating in this but I would like to know more about the background and what not if that is possible. Like what time frame, what kinda genre, those sorts of things. What are the rules for character creation? I'm sure you have these details set out in your mind, but you haven't posted them.

Very, very good question! This is actually deliberate. You can embellish anything you want into the setting, plot, etc. as long as you do not contradict anything that's already there. For instance, I don't know what a Lectrix or an Asker is either. Once the players (maybe you) define it, that identity sticks for the rest of the game.

If you create something the GM or the other players object to, they can try to bribe you not to do it. For example, let's say you want to work vampires into the story. You create a bartender character and have them not pay attention to Deborah because she's not a vampire. The bar only serves vampires.

If nobody objects, hooray! Now it's a science-fictiony story that also has vampires. If someone objects, they could try to bribe you with, say, 5 of their 25 karma points. If you accept, you take back the vampire stuff and come up with something else... and you now have 30 karma points while the other player has 20. So your ability to influence the game has increased while theirs had decreased. Let's say you don't accept. Then you would have to give them 5 karma points, and you would get your way.

Once there are several players involved in this game, when someone issues a challenge, to keep it simple we'll just say "Okay, everyone say how many karma points you're putting in, and whether they're in favor or against the proposed thing". Then we'll say "Anybody want to increase their bid?". And then the winning bid gets given to the losing side and distributed among them. It's actually simpler to do than to explain, you'll see.
Texas Al
Btw, I'll automatically bid at least one karma against anybody trying to control a character they didn't create. More if they're doing something that is out of keeping with that character.

For instance, Deborah jumping on the bar and kicking someone's drink at the bartender would probably cost you all your karma.

Whenever two players hit zero karma, everybody gets a refill.

Sounds interesting. I'm in. Unfortunatly I have lots of homework right now so you will have to wait till tomorrow or so for my "first" post.

grumble grumble. Stupid groundings

Demex is a 6 foot tall 200 pound male fighting machine. He is very muscular and likes action. If there is anything from a bar fight to an interplanetary war, he is there. He wears a black trench coat, and underneath his coat he is wearing clothes (hehehe) and is also packed with weapons. shuriken, a sword, and a couple of different guns.
demex
Demex walks into this bar
seems like a good place to start
and sits beside a short woman that seems to be ignored by almost everyone. Once the bartender notices Demex he walks right over and says, "Hey, and what does my favorite customer want today?"

Demex says, "Well I supose that would depend on this lady right here, you seem to be ignoring her. I think since she has been here longer then I, you should serve her first."
Texas Al

The bartender says "What will it be, madam?"
"A Clarion please."
"Coming up. The usual for you, Dem?"

Just then, there is muffled explosion and the horizon lights up briefly, and everyone looks up at the sky to see if there is any debris headed their way.

In the lull of the conversation someone wiseguy says "Like the Elector Adjutant said, folks, nothing to worry about here, it's all under control... we're just not sure whose yet."

This was met with a few nervous giggles and and equal number of grumbles from the crowd.

Deborah looked like she was about to say something in response but just looked down at her feet.
demex
Demex says to the bartender, "Hold that Tim, maybe later. This explosion seems larger then the last few. I'm gonna go check it out."

He then proceeds to his hover car parked outside.
