Trip to the moon....

drkns
I was just looking at my FRIH$ and was thinking if i'll ever be able to have enough to fly to hawaii or alaska LOL......almost like gas points and airmiles :/

Yeah so like the topic suggests, I was thinking about the subject and how clost we are to actually being able to fly to either mars or the moon on a regular basis and within a reasonable pricerange. I was watching Daily Planet and came across this subject where that guy that owns Virgin and i think this guy was on the show Rogue Billionaire or whatever the show was called but anywho, they were talking about all the various ways to get to the moon and maybe even mars very cheaply and effeciently and the guy said that he already has an aircraft in development which will be available to the masses in like 2010 where for only 300k you can hop onboard LOL......there was also a laser pulse transportational craft that was being discussed which i thought was rather intriging.......then it all turns out to be like the movie StarShip Troopers.....then i'll get to dressup as Rico LOL Wink
S3nd K3ys
LoL, frimiles.

I think I saw that show. Good stuff. Saw another where they're talking about building an elevator to attain geosynchronous orbit at over 20,000 miles. Shocked
drkns
I personally liked the one where they wanted to connect the earth to the moon with a single cable.......that's up their with the mars terraforming idea where they want to cover the entire planet with a roof LOL.
schumway
so where exactly on the moon is this american flag?
LandShark
Actually, if people trade things that they can sell, FRIH$ get a currency value. Though it wouldnt be much, or reconigzed by most people, it would still be worth something. . . Like the money on WoW or on forums that are really really really popular and have 10s of thousands of user, they get the actual rate their credits can go for
albert
Hey don't kid me......

How can the moon have FRIH$? Laughing

*But I believe it may be true one day. Cool
schumway
there are probably enough sats around earth that you can pick up a wireless link like you can driving around town LOL

have a look on your wireless for CheeseHeadGAN

Galaxy Area Network

LOL
shut up
Well science fiction can be possible, like one I heard about the other day where back in the 50s there was a movie where a guy had a phone that he carried with him in his pocket. Now we have cell phones. the robots in old movies, what do we have now? ROBOTS Exclamation Idea You get what I'm saying?
thiamshui
indeed.. anything is possible.. as long as we set our hearts at something, we can accomplish it.. it's not a matter whether we are able or not.. but a matter whether we are WILLING or not.. nothing is impossible..
schumway
although lack of funding can slow us down LOL

my first guess would be...on the top? My guess may be biased as I am from the US. Very Happy
Scorpio
We havent seen in the american flag on the moon in 35 years i guess.
A meteor might have very well crashed on it and blown it to smithereens for all you know Very Happy

But where is the top Laughing

I remember hearing about the cable to connect the moon, but the difficulties involved make it hard to imagine they considered it.

I saw the design on Discovery Channel ( I trust those guys Wink ) for the space hotel that would orbit the moon. They have the technology for it, just not the funding.

Our robots still don't make witty remarks though...
omeration
I think it would take you a few billion more points Wink

In the words of Red Hot Chilli Peppers, song Californication
"Space may be the final frontier,
But it's made in a Hollywood basement ..."
Wink

p.s. - some nice bumps on this topic Shocked

Is that a reference to that documentary about how the first moon landing never happened? "Conspiracy Theory"?

Very Happy

Well ... atleast that explains the absense of the American flag Wink

By the way, that documentary was called "Dark Side of the Moon"

The whole attached-to-the-Earth-by-a-big-huge-cable idea sounds interesting but the answer is really really simple. Remember when you were, like, four and you and a buddy would hold hands and spin around as fast as you could and then let go? Imagine the scrapes and bruises incurred from that times a bazillion. That can't be healthy for us, the moon, or any other celestial bodies involved. (for the person who's going to correct me saying that wouldn't happen, it's just a simple analogy explaining how impractical this scenario would be)

During the American civil war they experimented with the idea of attaching two cannonballs together with a length of chain and firing them from two cannons as an anti-personal weapon...well one cannon went off a split second before the other and the ball swung around and killed 6 people that were there to witness the demonstration. Sounds kinda like the cable to the moon idea doesn't it?

I know the idea isn't serious, but the similarities are obvious.
schumway
it would likely have to be a pretty honken big cable and what do you do about the fact that the moon rotates around us faster than we spin on our axis? Think some folks would be upset about the cable wrap?
Mithrandir
Besides that, the cable would have an immense wieght and would have to be able to maintain itself in a straight line to allow for high speed. It is much more practical to have a free craft to make the trip to the moon and back. There are some materials, such as carbon, which can be manipulated on the molecular level to produce a cable which could perform this feat but there are so many other logistical problems that it simply isn't a pratical idea.

Frimiles lol! That's original
NjRocket
crazy if that could happen eh? lol
schumway
so there is no more american flag on the moon?

I am not sure how my patriotic brothers in arms south of me can stand that.

when I drove through the states once to go from the East coast of Canada to Niagra Falls (our falls are nicer by the way :> ) almost every house had a flag... if not then ever second one... and if you didnt have one... well.. you must have been a communist... or relocated Canadian LOL

Maybe they should stop in again and see if anything has changed on the moon and drop off a new flag? It has to be worth the funds?
Kaisonic
That'd be cool if I could use my Frih$ to buy stuff in real life. You know what I'd get? A new computer. Mine sucks.
Josso
300k? I thought it was less than that. By the time I'm in my 30s I expect to be able to do that kind of thing for a reasonable price, it was to be expected I suppose but quite an exciting prospect none the less.
dz9c
going to the moon would be an uberly cool experience i wouldnt like to can anyone take me please i want it
saiyeek
Flying to moon was a hoax. So moon tourism, Long way to go man.

I think you'll find not, for our generation (aka: I'm 15 now). By the time we're in our 30's its expected to be quite a regular thing, I mean plans are being made already to launch something like this permenantly.
Hammy
I heard that next year Mars is going to be closer to use than any other planet, and will look larger than the moon to us.
I think we should finnaly live on mars.

Though i wouldnt mind dy trips to the moon Smile lol.
ivanegues
Today I watched againg "Apolo 13" Directed by Ron Howard. A very well done movie. I Liked.

It showed heroism, compromise, the american spirit at its best to save this 3 astronauts.

... all that for this 3 astronauts that were going to the moon to get some rocks from the moon.... so many childs die in the world of hunger every dar... and there is an space program....

I wonder if they were trying to find their compassion and humanity under those lunar rocks.
HoboPelican
What is going on here? A cable betwen the earth and the moon? Are we forgetting that the moon is NOT in a geosynchonous orbit? Wouldn't it just wrap the cable around the Earth? I think you might be thinking of the idea of running a cable to a sat in geo-synch orbit, which is discussed elsewhere. If I'm wrong, post a link.

BTW - Wikipedia has an article with locations of objects sent/left to the moon.
I don't belive any telecopes on earth have the resolution to see any of them, but the locations are listed if you wanted to try.
Wink Oh and the Hubble can't either, from what I read.
Davidgr1200
You can't buy tickets to the moon yet but you can sign up for buying tickets for a ride into space. I think that it's Virgin Intergalactic (a rather presumptuous name) who are planning to start flying people into space in a couple of years. However, they define space as 100km up if I remember correctly. About ten times higher than an aeroplane at cruising height. But if it does take off (sorry about the pun) then it will soon get cheaper and perhaps there will be tourist flights to the moon eventually. probably not in my lfietime though :(
tony
right now, the 7 month trip to get to mars doesnt sound like an exciting ride but i'd hit up the moon - i think thatd be fun.

You dont have any frih$!!!!!

7mths to mars... I would do that... assuming I had a deck of cards and a woman who would keep me company.

if I was stuck in my seat in a space suit... that would likely suck.

I would assume that it would be like a huge 747 or something with room to move around and space converted into a bar and more space converted into a casino since you are in intergalatic space, local laws and taxes would not apply.
