No announcement, just rumours. I think it's doubtful that Google will ever go hardware, or even make an operating system. What they might do, however, is commandeer Windows and Mac with a continuous onslaught of better programs and services until no one else can compete. We'll just have to wait and see about that, though.
With the increase in broadband speeds, it makes more sense to just offer services over the web: To become a data processing provider in whatever form will sell.
Google's USP, searchability, is already being integrated into operating systems. What will be interesting is to see the membrane between inside and outside a computer becoming more complex.
In the early days of computing, this was a popular idea. People would, they said, someday just plug their teminal in and everybocy would use one big computer.
Perhaps they were right, the very first cars were electric, and although they lost popularity, they are on a comeback now...
Google already came with GSA and Google Mini. Search 'servers' for networks, something which you wouldn't directly link to an online search engine either. They make a lot of products, more than you can imagine which have just about nothing to do with the search engine with which they came.
Whether it are network tools, search tools, marketing tools, email (tools), google offers it.
The first next thing which I would personally expect would be a browser coming from google, I don't think they'll come with an OS just yet, but wait till i'net connections are faster and offer a more "google approached design". But I seriously doubt they won't come with it
.
Google is likely to 'wh0re' linux for their devilish ends... let the SPYfest begin anew
Google seems to like Mozilla Firefox as a browser. In their Blogger suite they recommend it. I think at this point Google is more inclined to dip their fingers into everyone's programs and expand influence before going all out with their own software. The more familiar people are with Google being integrated into the programs the fast they'll switch to Google programs. Perhaps Google with take a more active role in the open-source Mozilla style programs, aiding coding help to Thuderbird, Firefox, Open Office, Linux, etc.
After all, Google Talk isn't exactly it's most popular service. I think they're being cautious about how to use their popularity.
If I were Google I wouldn't start competing in the market, not just yet, but I would build powerful relationships with everyone in the market to help expand their influence.
Google rocks!

They do not have to, google has gone way out of that, Now if some one wants to compete they have to see and ask google. Google is everywhere how do you expand the infinite????
it sounds weird tht google is releasing a pc. software sounds fine but hardware - tht's absurd.
