Please suggest potential featured discussions in this thread. They should be decent threads, be interesting for a large number of people (not a thread about yellow shoes) and not offending to anyone.
Edit: no rants please, only suggestions.

By avoiding controversial topics. If the page contains either 'Bush', 'liberals', 'evolution', 'gonzo', 'Kashmir', 'China/Hong Kong' or 'Israel/Palestine' then I will most likely not add it to the featured discussions.

Not to mention "Love" "Browser" "Car" "Hair Style" or just about every other topic I've seen here.
But hey, that's the whole idea, to generate conversations. I guess it wouldn't work well if every body agreed with everybody else.
I've been upkeeping this topic for a while now, and even though it goes to the second or third page, it often re-surfaces and gets a few new posts.

I just added it to the featured discussions.
I was hoping a bit more response in this thread, though. At least a choice between 2 suggestions.
It was a sicky, which to neophytes means: don't read me!
How's about this thread:
http://frihost.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=177211
(It's about "what flash is for")
I just added it.
Any other suggestions?

This. It'll make a nice impact on the system, you said to protest now. I'm just complying with your order.
While I accept your rational about having a non-controversial board, controversy is the spice of life. Why don't you do like Craigs list and have a Rants and Raves section for all the jackasses who want to curse and swear at each on over the internet, then allow open posting on the general board. Add a flag option that notifies you of posts that a specified number of people found to be miscatagorized or spam, and deal with the problems rather than require personal approval of every topic.
I would like a forum that addresses alternative energy, and one that deals with emerging technology.
Nice site from what I've seen so far though, thanks for the work

Biodiesel, this is about the featured discussions, the ones at the top of the forum index. Those are either announcements or 'interesting' threads and this is the place to suggest them.
A forum for alternative energy is way too specific. I can maybe make one about science?
I personally thought the featured discusions were more effective, and promenent when there were just three of them (rather than five topics). Though that is just my houmble opinion.

Yes, thanks.
How about one of the "How long until I am hoted" threads.
(already suggested at http://www.frihost.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=259101, but I thought perhaps it should be here.)
I can't belive i never noticed this before
How did you hear about frihost
The 9/11 truth This one only because I want everyone to watch this it is kind of important.
Server 1 down time
Frihost's most memorable quotes
Maybe you should one of these discussions:
"Windows Vista"
"Are Gadgets Bad for Health?"
"What is your Age?"
"Schools or Colleges - Which would you prefer?"
"Can AC Milan Fight Back???"
Yea go with what n0obie said.
Blaster is a frihost freak Sorry but it is about me.
I seriously think that WWIII is a good topic though
http://www.frihost.com/forums/vt-13011.html
The frihost forum rules!
All the new newbies should read it and quite a few of the regulars should read them at least once more...
Dont go around featuring your own thread, and wait till it gets popular
I dont' think bondings even looks at this anymore. If he does he forgot about WWIII. But yea i agree with scorpio. Don't advertise it right off the bat.
I didn't forget about this thread and read it from time to time. I just didn't really like the suggestions, at least not for a featured discussion.
oh then sorry for the misunderstanding. I just didn't get any reply.
@dwcnps your topic got locked anyway. So it wouldn't have been s a good featured discussion then.
Well I'm asking the person who closed it (James007) to re-open and move it into the relevant location, but I get your point, don't do braging about your own topic and don't suggest it to go into featured topic until it becomes popular (I learn at least 1 thing at frihost every time I check the forums!
)

Name a (wacky?) English language cultural difference
By the wonderful Philosopher Princess. It's a good topic, as everyone (or near everyone) on Frihost speaks English, and most people come from different parts of the globe.
Yea I like that idea. That is a really interesting topic. I think it would be a good topic to have. Its also really interesting.
I looked at this one and it's great What is your favourite quote/saying?
This?

I really need this to be noticed if FriHost is ever to do well in travian.
Hey hack_man_ I just got told not to suggest your own topic and to wait till it's popular as well okay? Just look for a popular topic (which isn't yours) and suggest it okay?
Thankyou...

I admit that is my topic, but it does seem popular..
So you can consider it i guess/

And another:
Why are you using FRIhost
Hi Bondings..
I just wanted that you must start a new category by title..
Games and Mods
It may include programming engines , games art resorces , anything related to games... and designing mods...
How about this one; another photoshop _________ contest:
http://www.frihost.com/forums/vt-56917.html#474540
I think you should have a place for the newbies, like me, that explains the [donate] & FRIH$ thing @ the right. Finding about FRIH$ is not difficult but...
I read the rules, went to the market, and read the stickies in a few places and did not find the answer 'til I read the 3rd page of the Sticky: About FRIH$ and Points. I think it would have been easier if it was explained in the rules or something.
Just a thought. I also was wondering how you guys are generating revenue. Do you get $$ from the hits on the ads, like most others or what?
I think the forum ideas is great and all but it does not take a PHD in econ to realize you need $$ to pay for your time, servers, etc. I noticed that there are a number of forum sites and wondered how they are generating the $$ to maintain them too?

You may find this FAQ quite useful. There's also a great search feature if you have a newbie-question

I tried to search in a few places but to no avail. I may have searched incorrectly or something. I may have just not read the correct place. I looked @ the FAQ and some of the other stickies but it was late & I may have missed it.
Thanks for the info.
Right now any thread will do.It needs to be updated. Its been over a month now.
What would be good was if we could "Digg This" for our topics. It would make sense to only apply this to certain forums (No good in PHP or mySQL
) but each week, the topic with the most "Digg's" could be placed on the featured discussion's list.

Do you mean a button from the Digg website to digg a thread or rather a Frihost implementation of the Digg system, like voting for a thread?

Frihost implementation of the Digg system, like voting for a thread
It would mean that those topics were both dynamic meaning no horrible need for manual update, and that those topics were relevant to our users and if they are counted, say for based on a week, up to date as well
I meant they are counted 7dayas from today rather than staticly produced every week. ie. SELECT topic_id from phpbb_frihDiggs WHERE date > $date ($date being today minus 7days)
Excellent idea garionw!

Thanks, Although you would still need manual injection for event like Christmas, and server Crashes.
Also if it proved to be popular the entire forums could be based around something like that (But it would require massive database changes, and Bondings might not want to do that) I'll do up a screenshot of what I mean.
Edit 2: scrap it

It is silly to say such a thing when the best arguments and debates arise from controversial subjects, like politics and government.
Besides, you already have many forums where the subjects are controversial, like the Religion Forum; it's a great place for debate, etc.
If you do not want controversial subjects, we should stick to neutral forums completely: Polish, now there's a forum we can all agree upon!
EDIT: Thank you for the history forum.

We need a new featured disscusion. This topic people seem to take intrest in. I think its an interesting question and gets a lot of good answers.

Avoiding controversial topics is to prevent frihost turning up on google when someone searches for these controversial stuff
I think my "frihost redesign project" topic could/should be made a featured discussion, as it is of relevance to pretty much every one on this forum..
The post is here http://www.frihost.com/forums/vt-82674.html
Also I think its too bad that you've never followed up on the promises made in the topic here:
http://www.frihost.com/forums/vt-78941.html
I'll go through your thread, Luke
http://www.frihost.com/forums/vt-88067.html
It would be interesting to actually see what people think of it
I don't have any to suggest, but some new ones do need to be added...
It's almost April 2008, and the most recent featured discussion is December 2007?
It makes the forum look slow and unkempt at first glance, and may give a new member a bad impression.
i back that up, we may come across a number of intresting things if a topic was given for every month or so to write stories. after reading those wonderful stories of the previous contest, it should be followed up again.

Bondings could add 100 votes to those topics manually. And it wouldn't need a lot of coding or database changes.
yes I know this was posted a year ago, but it was a good suggestion.
I suggest the Victorian Bushfire thread for featured discussion.

I like your thinking Zampano. Controversial is like spice, and a cohesive factor in the Frihost forum. That and World News and Politics. I cannot understand why people are worried about controversial? If it is controversial and makes its way to Google, people are going to be signing up with Frihost, more posts, isn't that what Bondings wants? Just imagine the FBI, CIA, and the guys at Gaetamo joining up?
I think the more controversial the better (but not for effect of course, has to have substance to it). Must say though controversial at Frihost is never really out of bounds.
Polish! That was a good one
http://www.frihost.com/forums/vt-104637.html
new frihost writing contest.
Asking an admin to take a look at this thread and maybe subscribe.
I know you said no controversial topics, but I suggest: http://www.frihost.com/forums/vt-103095.html because it is so relevant right now and it effects virtually everyone on this planet. What's the problem with controversy anyway? It is what stirs up conversation in the first place and its not like people can't respond and voice their opinions if they want. Anyway, that is my suggestion, I am not trying to offend anyone with it, I just think it would be a good featured discussion.
Hey, I've started a code breaking competition, in the competitions forum.
It's not like a "here is the code, decode it" contest, you have to pass through various levels, and then you finally get the "here is the code, decode it" thing, which you have to decode, and then pm the answer to me(the admin).
I was wondering if it would be a topic of interest and could be added to the featured posts, as the term 'de-code' itself catches the eye!
I'm pretty sure that it can grab a lot of attention, just think about it.. doesn't the whole idea just make you want to take part
I was just hoping that my 5 hours and 250 frih$(which I will spend) don't go to waste
Seeing a bit of participation and healthy competition is always great!
The first round of the Frihost Games is up!
It really does need to be a featured discussion in order to get good participation, especially for the first round.
Linky: http://www.frihost.com/forums/vt-105074.html
Well, I am relaunching the Frihost PowerCube Lotto and I am hoping to get more participation. Last year when it launched it ran for three drawings and got about 5 tickets purchased each. This year, I am hoping to get more participation and I am hoping this can be made a featured discussion!
Link: http://www.frihost.com/forums/vt-105442.html
Thank you,
-Nick

The Frihost games round 1 needs to be featured because it only has until the 2nd of may for entries to be in, only 2 entries so far.
I would like to have my story as a featured disscussion
I realize most of your posters are younger, but a forum for family or parenting posts would be a nice addition. I personally would help get it off the ground since that is my main area of interest and employment.
Thanks

The frihost ranks poll should be featured, in order to get the volume of votes needed to get a real result out of such a large poll.
http://www.frihost.com/forums/vt-109791.html
+1
This poll needs to be global, like I mentioned a while back.
http://www.frihost.com/forums/vt-111111.html
Not for any virtue of the topic, but just because it is topic number 111,111.
Nobody noticed number 100,000, but this might be another fun milestone to point out.
This (6 of the same digit) won't happen again until the forums double in size.
